Rutgers Line-Up 2017/18

Not sure where it was discussed (I did a quick search but couldn't find) so I will post here. There was some discussion about Ohio States Line-up so I will share what I heard in two podcasts I listen to recently.

Tomasello will be going 125 per Tom Ryan on The T-Row & Funky Show. Ryan also said that McKenna and Hayes will wrestle-off and the winner will get to pick the weight they want to go.

Then on the Steelwood Radio show Joey McKenna added that it will be a best 2 out of 3 wrestle-off and he said they both want to go 141 so you can assume the winner of the 2 out of 3 will pick 141.

I am guessing McKenna wins the wrestle-off (I would love to watch those matches).

Wow. With McKenna being as good as he is, and being able to basically transfer wherever he wanted, I am stunned he is going to wrestle off at OSU. I figured he would have been guaranteed the spot he wanted.

Tomasello just took silver in Belaraus at 57KG for his 2nd international medal this year. That looks like a touch match for Suriano.

Did they discuss why NATO is going from 133 to 125?
Tom Ryan is going all in this year. If Toma doesn't drop down, they get no (or low) points at 125, and it forces Pletcher out of the lineup.

After this season they lose Tomasello, Bo Jordan, and Snyder, which is about 60 points at NCAAs, and PSU only loses Retherford and McCutcheon, about 30 points.

And I guess Pletcher is the heavier of the 2? Or do they think 125 is easier to win/place?

Yes no chance Pletcher can make 125. He wrestled 141 last season(he moved up to help lineup but he will be a full sized 133).
Nato would be ranked #1 at 133 if he was there.

Pletcher wrestled most of his matches at 141 last year. Last year was the first Toma wrestled above 125 in college. Toma will be wrestling a light 125 schudule this year, so he doesn't have to make weight a lot.

If Nick catches Toma on Friday night, I favor Nick. On Saturday, it's a toss-up.

Good 1st post. My thoughts.

125 - Spot on, Suriano top 3.
133 - Agree about Del, no reason for Firestone or Lipari to bump. Firestone has a redshirt to use.
141 - I personally think Ash will be out longer than staff is letting on. So I look for MVB to come down and wrestle most of the year and possibly all of the year if Ash gets a 6th year. If Ash doesn't get the 6th year I expect him to go out and wrestle late Jan early Feb.
149 - Look forward to see what Deluca has, if healthy I think he should be a qualifier.
157 - Lewis should be in the mix for a 3rd to 8th (and if WNG is correct he will be a National Champ)
165 - Biggest question mark in my mind. I see JVB, Grello and Scott battling it out for this weight. I know Scott beat Grello last year in a tournament but I think we should see JVB or Grello holding the spot. If we can qualify the weight that would be great.
174 - Pagano or Grello, if Grello can't make 165 I expect him to battle for 174. Pagano seems to be putting in a lot of work so I would give him the edge here.
184 - Gravina, capable of AA but really needs more than a throw by in neutral. Hopefully he worked on his feet a lot in the off season.
197 - Agree with you
285 - Agree with you

I hope our back-ups and redshirts hit a lot of open tournaments. Love to see these guys get as many matches as possible.
Any substantiation to murmurs that Lewis is going up o 165? Would open door 157 for JVB. This makes sense with Grello at 174.

Presumably, Lewis thought he was going 157, when he tweeted this on May 10, so his title run would go through Nolf.

At 157, there's Nolf, followed by a drop-off to the rest of the field, where Lewis would be scrapping from, with a semi against MIcah Jordan, Kemerer or Smith, followed by a Nolf final.

But, at 165, there's IMar, Joseph and Massa. That's a semi-final, final minefield just waiting to happen.

I suppose you could make the argument that the rest of the 165 field isn't as strong as the 157 field, but not by a lot.

Man, unless Lewis improved and looks as good as WNG says, I really have a tough time seeing Lewis beat most of those guys right now... hope he makes me a believer

To be an All American he will definitely have to be at 157. I would have to say Nolf is not losing unless he's injured. Still hoping Lewis can get it done.

Why the differences of opinion between a Friday and Sat match?

C-husk-I am assuming PA is considering them meeting in the finals which are at night and they will weigh in for that match in the morning. NATO will have all day to recover from the weight cut. On Friday they will weigh in in the morning have the Qtrs then Semi's and unlike on Saturday when NATO can eat and drink as much as he wants, Friday he cannot since he has to make weight on Saturday.

Yes, sir. I'm assuming that the cut is harder for Nato, than it is for Nick, and that when Nato puts weight back on on Saturday, he's going to put more on than Nick, plus the increase in strength that will come from being able to eat all day Saturday. Now, they can't just pig out after weigh-ins, but they'll be putting all the right nutrients in his body to get as much strength back as possible.

From you guy's standpoint, you want them to meet Friday. From a good for the sport standpoint, because of it being televised, and wanting to showcase what should be an awesome match, I want to see it Saturday night. UNLESS, the team race is so tight that PSU needs Nick to win to keep Nato out of the finals. ;)

Of course it is. I was asking where you heard those murmurs. As in was it fan stuff, or insiders or somewhere else?
Some fans mistakenly consider themselves insiders based on second and third hand information. While others, just pretend they are insiders and parrot nonsense from other misinformed fans.

So, are you going to tell us where? Are you a PSU fan btw?

What a snarky bunch here.

First hand information would be information obtained directly from the athlete and/or coaches. I have no such information. The source of the murmur was a person with knowledge of the New Jersey wrestling scene. It was mentioned in passing during a Suriano centric discussion regarding the upcoming season. Much to the anticipated chagrin of this board I failed to perform an adequate interrogation regarding his source.

As a response to "Are you a PSU fan?" I ask if you are a fifteen year old?

The only snarky person here right now is you. All they were asking was where you heard the information, since it was stuff we hadn't heard yet. "Conversation with a person with knowledge of the NJ wrestling scene" would have been a good enough response from the get go.

Hey man, you were the one asking us if there was any substantiation. I don't have any recent inside info on the subject, that's why I asked where you heard the murmurs from. FOr all I know, your info is better or more recent than mine. Since it came from someone outside the program, I am going to say that rumor is most likely false. Everything I have heard from people close to the team indicates the plan is for Lewis to go at 157.

Attend the SKWC Meeting on October and have your questions answered directly by Coach Goodale.

For details on meeting time, location, and how to join see other thread announcing the meeting.

Or email skwcmembership@gmail.com

Thanks and hope everyone can make the meeting

Nice spirited practice today. 165 will probably be JVB. Grello up to challenge Pagano at 174. DeLuca is my dark horse to surprise like my Lewis prediction of 2 years ago. MVB hopefully at 141. Gross looking very good. Suriano is the closest thing to an automated machine that I have seen. All the commits for next year on their official visit, Robinson, Lightner and Jantzer were there at end along with Nick Auguilar from Gilroy CA, 125 pounder and 2 time Fargo champ for an official. Lewis looks like a man among boys.

What is going on at 197? Mulligan or Correnti?

They will wrestle off as well. Matt McDonald going down to 197 from heavyweight.
So Correnti will not redshirt? Who practices with Gravina? Thanks for supplying information for the wrestling neophytes.

so here is what the line up will be...

125 - Suriano (Mackall solid back up)
133 - Delvecchio (Firestone)
141 - Mike Van Brill (please please please get the 6th year Ash !!!)
149 - DeLuca
157 - Lewis
165 - John Van Brill (Scott)
174 - Pagano (Grella solid back up)
184 - Gravina (would assume Pagano moves up here if anything happens to Gravina)
197 - Mulligan or Correnti (don't count out Correnti, he has now had 1 full year to adjust to 197)
285 - Gross

Very solid line up, even with Ash out. MVB is a stud. This is the first line up I can remember where there is not a black hole at 1 or 2 weights.

This lteam could potentially have 10 National qualifiers, and 2-4 All Americans (withOUT Ash).

It is so darn frustrating to have Suriano now in the lineup only to not have Ashanult at 141, Damn ! And from listening to his recent interviews (TOS had a good one a few days ago), it sounded to me like Ashnault is not even interested in a 6th year, it's either wrestle this year when healed or get ready for the next part of his career: International and possiby MMA.. Fingers crossed he's healed by Jan/Feb.
