Big Ten T&F Championships results

Updates - Currently with 3 events completed out of 21, the RU men haven't scored their first points yet. With 6 events out of 21 completed for the women, RU is currently in 7th place with 16 points. RU's points so far have come from 1st place in pole vault (Chloe Timberg, as was mentioned), 4th place in javelin (Alexa Gardner), and 8th place in javelin (Emilie Ghalam). Go RU.

Edit- Alivia Ash has added a point for RU, finishing 8th in the women's high jump, jumping 5' 9 1/4". Only the top 3 athletes jumped higher, but the other 4 athletes finished higher than Alivia on less misses.

Going into the final day of the conference championship meet, the Rutgers women are currently in 9th place with 17 points, and the RU men are also in 9th place with 13 points, tied with Ohio State. All of RU's points so far have come in field events.

RU has a chance to score significant points in several events on Sunday. In the men's javelin, Joshua Mather has the best throw in the Big Ten this season, Steven Coponi is ranked 6th, and Luke Souders is ranked 10th, based on best performances of the season.

In the men's discus, Kyle Lipscomb is ranked 2nd in the conference, and Adam Hunt 7th, on the B1G performance list.

RU's best chance to score significant points in a running event may be in the men's 400 hurdles. Rutgers' Jameson Woodell came into the meet ranked 14th in the B1G with a season best time of 52.09. But with an impressive preliminary round performance in the hurdles on Friday, Woodell ran 50.52 to qualify for today's 9 man final with the second fastest time of the prelims. RUs Micah Wood entered the meet ranked 16th in conference, but was disqualified in his 400 meter hurdles preliminary race.

Other best chances for RU to score points today are in the men's 200m, where Nadale Buntin qualified for the 9 man final with the 6th best time in the prelims, the 4x100 relay where the RU men have the 5th fastest time and the women the 6th fastest time on the B1G performance list, and the 4x400 relay where the RU women have the 6th fastest time on the list. (The RU men currently are ranked 12th in B1G in the 4x400.)

Other events that RU athletes will be competing in today include the men's high jump, pole vault, men's 1500 where RU's BIlly Hill is ranked 11th on the B1G performance list, men's 5000m, and the women's triple jump, shot put, and 5000m. Go RU!

Thanks for all that info. Wish we were more competitive in the running events. Where does our impressive Freshman woman’s 1500 meter runner stand? Is she Injured? Can’t remember her name.

Glad you asked that. Frosh Alexandra Carlson was ranked 13th in the conference going into the championship meet... In the preliminary round on Friday, she ran the 10th fastest 1500m time.

Twelve runners qualified for today's final, but because the qualifying system for the finals is top 3 in each heat of the prelims and the next 3 fastest times, Alexandra didn't qualify, since the runners with the 15th, 17th, and 18th fastest times finished 1-2-3 in their heat and automatically qualified. (Alexandra finished 4th in her heat) Alexandra ran her 1500m prelim race more than 6 seconds faster than all 3 of them, and she had the fastest time of any athlete that didn't qualify by over 3 seconds. (But 2 of the 3 runners with slower prelim times that qualified instead of Alexandra did have faster season best times than Alexandra, and one, Olivia Howell of Illinois, was ranked 3rd in the conference coming into the championship meet, based on season best performance.)

With 14 points scored in the men's javelin due to a 1st place B1G championship by Joshua Mather and a fifth place finish by Steven Coponi, the Rutgers men are currently in 5th place in the team standings with 27 points. Great job by both throwers.

Trying to digest all that. Wondering if that’s the way it works in other meets - whether college or other competitions. Seems like she “deserved” to be in the final.

AZ… I’m guessing you are or were connected to the program in some manner with all the information you have.

Yes, the top finishers in each heat, along with a specified number of the next fastest times, is generally considered to be the fairest way to determine qualifiers for the final, if all of the prelim athletes can't run against each other in the same preliminary race. Different environmental conditions at the time of the different preliminary heats, athletes not knowing how their time at any point while they're competing in a given prelim compares with the times of other athletes in different prelims, having differences in the caliber of athletes in different heats to compete against, etc, usually makes doing it this way a little fairer than just taking the fastest performances out of all the qualifying heats.

RU women score 4 points in the 4x100 with a 5th place finish. They're currently in 10th place in the team standings with 21 points.

Unfortunately, the Rutgers men were a DNF (did not finish) in their 4x100 finals race, so they missed out on the opportunity to score points there. Usually that involves a dropped baton, a fall, or an injury. Hopefully it's not due to an injury.

Another clutch RU performance was Jasmine Van Note in the women's shot put. Her 53'5" today was good for 8th place, for one point. But that's more than 2 feet further than her previous best of 51'3.75" which was the RU school record that she set earlier this year, that had her ranked 12th in the conference going into the championship meet.

AZ, what happened in the 400? Notice Taj did not qualify for final.
He wasn't entered in the prelims.. He's been battling some injuries this season, and I'm not sure what his current status is. He's still listed as competing for RU later today in the 4x400, but I don't know if that's still the correct relay lineup.

Jameson Woodell, who had the second fastest 400h prelim time of 50.52 on Friday and seemed likely to score some points in the final, evidently had a bad race and finished last and out of the scoring in the 9 man final today, with a time of 54.93.

Nadale Buntin finished 7th in the men's 200m final, adding 2 points for RU.

RU scored fewer points in the men's discus than some of us expected.... Adam Hunt, who was ranked 7th in the B1G with a season best throw of 181' 8", finished in 23rd place with a throw of 153' 1".

Kyle Lipscomb, ranked second in the B1G with a season best throw of 187' 3", finished in 8th place and scored 1 point with a throw of 178' 7".

Well, that's a wrap. The RU women scored 3 points in the 4x400, finishing 6th out of the 13 schools in the race.

The women's team finished the meet in 12th place with 25 points. Of the team's 25 points, 7 points were scored in the relays, and the remaining 18 points were scored in field events. Last year the Rutgers women also finished the meet in 12th place, but with 14.5 points.

The RU men moved up and tied Michigan State for 10th in the final meet standings with 38 points, by finishing 5th in the 4x400. 10 points were scored in the running events, and the remaining 28 were scored in field events.... Last year the Rutgers men finished 11th, with 33 points.

Is it me or does it feel like we have less athletes overall than the other B1G schools? I feel like that would help us score more points.
