Rutgers vs Fairfield game thread 11/14/21

Let's hope we smooth out this offense and shoot at a decent percentage today. And get Tiya going

11-8 Fairfield, end of 1st. Eatman is subbing so often there is no way for them to keep up.

I don't like the way RU doesn't get leads against teams like this right from the start and needs 2nd half to get it done.
My guess: Tim might be experimenting with line up during these type of games to find out the best players to use for when the conference games start.

I haven't been following the game, focus was on field hockey and soccer NCAA games. But seeing 13 players with 5+ minutes, how can anyone get in a flow?

There is something going on with the two Rutgers basketball teams playing home games and not scoring,

It's a win, I'll not complain.
But do hope they game strategy, right now, is for the coaches to see how all the players interact on floor with each other in order to find the best starting line-up and the main rotation players before conference play begins

They are going to be killed before B1G at the Paradise Jam.

Hopefully, they play up to the challenge at Paradise Jam. The good thing is that you can go hard for all three games because of the depth. Just shorten that rotation to no more than 10 a game. Maybe a player or two gets substituted into the rotation on a game-to-game, situational basis??

I admire the unbridled optimism, but this team is far from B1G caliber. It's hard to get excited when most of the players are unfamiliar one and done additions - doesn't even seem like Rutgers. I hope I'm proven wrong but this looks to be a very long season.

Vanderbilt lost to Little Rock
TAM might be a problem
Pitt lost to Delaware
Northwestern won their first two games pretty easily , so problem
DePaul and Arizona, big problems
South Dakota is 0-2, but played Oklahoma tough, blown out by Dawn’s South Carolina
a winnable game

I always have hope, but understand thoughts of impending doom, especially if the RU team isn’t playing up to expectations.
I look at that as the usual RU fan ( FB-MBB-WBB) outlook who have had a negative outlook drummed into them (especially because of bad RU FB &MBB teams in past).

Expecting the team to move from poor play to a winning combination is hard to do , when you think about some RU programs past and that carries over to the RU WBB program, even if we don’t realize it

Pearl Jam will se a RU WBB program that is hitting on all cylinders because of the tune up games it played and the adjustments that came for seeing what needed to be fixed .
I always try to find the positive to blunt the negative take before games are played.
Can do feels better than they can't when it comes to RU Sports programs ( for me)

Starting 5
Lassiter
Martino
Walker
Brown
Singleton
Thoughts about this starting lineup??

I, personally, am not a fan Walker, Brown, and Singleton at the same time. To me, it's not enough ball-handling and perimeter shooting. I think it would work if Tyia shows that she can knock down that mid range and foul line jumpshot. Osh is going to have to develop a 3pt shot and better ball-handling skills quickly. The good thing is, she brings some of that already. It just has to be fine-tuned. These improvements are good for their professional futures, but could be a problem in the immediate future of the team. We'll see what happens.

Meanwhile, there are so many perimeter players on the roster that I don't see the need for using Osh there right now.

Lassiter has shown to be the same type of savvy point guard that J. Mason is. Lots of intangibles, natural leadership skills, and the ability to hit the three.

Tim may feel that Walker deserves to start the way she has played. I would agree. But,....I would stick with Tiya as the starting center and bring Walker off the bench unless a specific matchup called for Sakima to start. Tiya is one of the team leaders and needs the vote of confidence from keeping the starting job. Doesn't mean that Walker doesn't get significant, if not the bulk of the minutes at center. It may be the thing that pushes Tiya to keep improving her game.

I substitute Petree in the spot for Walker. Walker's most likely coming in by the 5 or 6 minute mark of the first quarter. It depends on Tiya's performance to that point.

One other thing............When are all these "shooters" going to show up?!!
The low shooting percentage from 3pt land and from the foul line are IMO the biggest reason for our struggles on offense. The hesitancy to shot open threes. I know the players are capable shooters. They have to get the repetition in practice to get it rolling.

I understand Tim wants the passing and moving side-to-side, and I do see the benefit in that. The danger in it comes from overpassing and forcing the ball into the teeth of the zone while the three point line is wide open, usually resulting in turnovers.

They don't always seem to consider what the defense is doing in front of them. Other teams have packed in the zone on us historically because we've never been considered a good perimeter shooting team. Recent teams have been better, but inconsistent IMO This current team should be salivating at the sight of a 2-3 zone.

Hopefully, they can get the practice time for shooting and FTs. They always mention the tough lengthy practices. I hope they don't end up having a negative impact on the team's shooting.
