RU looking for a B1G winning record, needs to sweep this road trip to do so. Indiana stinks but Purdue will be a challenge. Here goes:

Indiana

125 Metzler MD Loss, IU 4-0
133 Suriano MD Win, Tied 4-4
141 Lipari Loss, IU 7-4
149 Ashnault MD Win, RU 8-7
157 JVB Win, RU 11-7
165 Glasgow Win, RU 14-7
174 Grello Win, RU 17-7
184 Olivari Loss, RU 17-10
197 Correnti Win, RU 20-10
HVY Colucci Win, RU 23-10

Purdue

125 Metzler MD Loss, PU 4-0
133 Suriano MD Win, Tied 4-4
141 Lipari Loss, PU 7-4
149 Ashnault MD Win, RU 8-7
157 JVB vs Parriot. I think JVB earns a critical W for RPI. RU 11-7
165 Glasgow Win, RU 14-7
174 Grello vs Lydy. Big match with B1G seeding implications. On the road Grello loses. RU 14-10
184 Gravina Lose, RU 14-13
197 Correnti vs Brunner. Correnti is 2-0 lifetime vs Brunner and gets a big upset here. RU 17-13
HVY Colucci Win, RU 20-13

Does Garvina wrestle?
Does RU Sit Grello/Glasgow for Indiana (Are they 100%)
Does MVB get 1 more match or is Lipari now the B10 Starter for tournament.

There are some question marks.

Every match projection for Metzler is MD loss and it almost always turns out to be accurate. It’s amazing that this is the best we can put out there at 125.

Metzler was a spark plug last year when he filled in and there was hopes he would be even better this year at the start of the season...

We also have Aguilar, whom beat Metzler in a wrestleoff, but he’s still a true freshman and I’m not sure if he would even qualify for nationals rn.. so it’s best we keep the RS on.

Using Intermat Dual Meet Rankings:

#14 Rutgers vs Indiana (unranked)

125- Shane Metzler vs Liam Cronin (17-13). Cronin wins by dec.
Indiana 3 RU 0

133- #4 Nick Suriano (17-2) vs Garrett Pepple (14-9). Suriano wins by Major Dec.
RU 4 Indiana 3

141- Lipari (7-9) or MVB (4-5) vs Paul Konrath (17-8). Konrath by dec over either RU wrestler.
Indiana 6 RU 4

149- #1 Anthony Ashnault (19-0) vs Fernie Silva (3-5). Ashnault by Tech Fall. Pin a definite possibility.
RU 9 Indiana 6

157- #14 John Van Brill (15-9) vs Jake Danishek (14-9). JVB by Dec. This is a toss up, but JVB is 2-0 vs common opponents, Danishek is 0-2.
RU 12 Indiana 6

165- Stephan Glasgow (6-6) vs Bryce Martin (15-7). Toss up. Will give Martin a close dec. even though Glasgow has kept matches very close against good competition. Needs to win to get confidence. Could see Oliveri here too, would still give Martin the Dec.
RU 12 Indiana 9

174- Joe Grello (11-6) vs Jacob Covaciu (13-6). Toss up. Giving Grello the Dec based on his good performance against Stefanik of Princeton
RU 15 Indiana 9

184- Nick Gravina (2-2) vs Norman Conley (14-11). Toss up. Giving Gravina a close dec. Conley doesn't have wins over anyone good, Gravina's losses are to good wrestlers. Ru might even only wrestle Gravina once this weekend against Purdue on Sunday, as that will be the closer match.
RU 18- Indiana 9

197- Matt Correnti (11-11) vs Jake Kleimola (9-11). Correnti by Dec w an MD a strong possibility. Correnti looked very good against #3 Brucki.
RU 21 Indiana 9

285- Chris Colucci (11-9) vs Fletcher Miller (7-3). Toss up. Not much separates these 2. Giving Colucci the dec based on his match winning performance against Princeton.

RU wins 24 Indiana 9.

Will put up my Purdue predictions after viewing the Indiana match, and who actually wrestles.

Do we think AA gets a break this weekend at some point or do they keep him rolling?

Not really. As mentioned we are redshirting Aguilar. But Suriano was expected to be a 4 year 125lber. That made Mackall transfer to Iowa State so that really hurt not having him. Metzler really should be a backup, but he is pressed into the starting spot. He is over matched but he goes hard....

You still need AA to win this dual - Fernie Silva would win against our back up.He was a D2 All American. There are 4 to 5 toss up matches.

If MVB can no longer make weight without losing considerable strength don’t be surprised if we see him at 149 should they decide to give AA a break this weekend

He took Ash by surprise. Silva will be dangerous in the B1G Tourney.

Yeah he already knocked of Baby J from Maryland. He was a teammate and training partner with Isaiah White at Nebraska now from Notre Dame College. He is definitely a landmine at the Big Ten tourney. We need to start recruiting some of these wrestlers from D2 and Juco with 2 years under their belt.Think of Lewis & Deluca..

#14 RUTGERS vs PURDUE (unranked) preview

After watching last night's 23-11 against Indiana, there is a little more info to go on. The 3 non starters who appeared on the bench last night were Nick Gravina (184), Mike Van Brill (141,149) and Anthony Oliveri (165, 174, 184).
After seeing Willie Scott anguish in pain last night, I am guessing it will be Nick Gravina going at 184. With Lipari winning impressively , I'm guessing he stays at 141 for Purdue. If winning is important to Coach Goodale, and 165 still issue with Glasgow out, and Benner way small for that weight class, I wonder if bumping MVB and Ashnault up a weight class is a thought?

So here goes for tonight assuming MVB and Ashanault do not bump:

125- Shane Metzer (7-13) vs #19 Devin Schroeder (17-8). Schroeder by Major Dec. Been a rough stretch vs good wrestlers for Metzler.
Purdue 4 RU 0

133- #4 Nick Suriano (18-2) vs #14 Ben Thornton . Suriano by Major Dec. Thornton is good, but not a top 8 guy. He lost to Phillip by 5 who Suriano Majored.
RU 4 Purdue 4

141- Peter Lipari /MVB vs Nate Limmex (15-10). I think either Lipari or MVB win a close dec here, guessing it will be Lipari since he won by Major last night, but not sure.
RU 7 Purdue 4

149- #1 Anthony Ashnault (20-0) vs Parker Filius (8-14). Ashnault by Tech Fall. Yes I saw Ashnault struggle against Illinois, but Filius won't be competitive, He's lost like 10 in a row, 14 of his last 16. Pin a definite possibility.
RU 12 Purdue 4

157- #14 John Van Brill (16-9) vs #13 Griffen Parriott (12-6). TOSS UP.JVB by a close dec. JVB beat Parriott by 2 pts last March, both wrestling well lately.
RU 15 Purdue 4

165- Benner or Olivieri vs Cole Wysocki (7-17). TOSS UP. Wysocki by close dec over either (all 3 have lost almost all their matches the past 6 weeks).
RU 15 Purdue 7

174- Joe Grello (12-6) vs #11 Dylan Lydy (18-6). TOSS UP. Lydy by a close dec. Both wrestling well of late, Lydy beat Grello by 3 last March.
RU 15 Purdue 10

184- Nick Gravina (2-2) vs Max Lyon (19-7) TOSS UP. Gravina by close dec. Gravina beat Lyon 8-2 last March, but this isn't the same Gravina, who's rusty , and not 100 %, and Lyon has won approx. 8 in a row against mediocre competition. Nick needs this one for himself & the team.
RU 18 Purdue 10

197- Matt Correnti (12-11) vs #12 Christian Brunner(19-7). Brunner by close dec. Correnti beat Brunner 2 seasons ago, but Brunner has stepped up big time. Correnti wrestling well, an upset not out of the question.
RU 18 Purdue 13

285- Chris Colucci (12-9) vs Jacob Aven (9-15). Colucci by close dec. Colucci wrestling well of late, Aven is better than his record appears, losing close to Mason Parris and Hemida. He lost to Fletcher Miller who Colucci beat last night.

RU 21 Purdue 13 Final

Who was the D3 NC that Johnson and Wales has that we wrestled against Opening Day? I'd take him for sure.

Lipari wrestled against the backup so not sure I’d put much weight on the major and MVB more then likely is not making 141 again ....so my guess is it’s Lipari the rest of the way ..might even see MVB at 149 just to give AA a rest ...bumping both up I just don’t see that happening ...if dual is on the line or we get a bad start I’m guessing it’s AA ...if we don’t need AA it might be MVB ...should be a lot stronger at his natural weight .....

Grello vs #11 lydy is not a tossup.. id consider Correntti vs #12 Brunner closer to a toss up... either way they will both be underdogs with a good opportunity to knock off ranked guys

Good call. Silva gave AA a scare

AA wasn’t moving his feet at all or attacking the head when his opponent dropped to a knee in neutral. Glad he pulled out the win. It should be a good wake up call.

Ash just seemed out of sync. I did like him working through uncomfortable positions and trying different moves. Even though he got caught in the throw he initiated the move. I hope he continues to wrestle free and open and just works on cleaning up a few things.
