Saban's deal with Kirby Smart

Hey if Ash is gonna coach the bowl game, there's nothing any of us can do about it (except whine and complain). Let's hope for the best resolution to the problem.

And I never said it's the same situation. Just hoping for a similar resolution

Experienced coaches know what type of time allocation is required to make the transition but the genius RU fans know better. From this point forward every waking minute of Ash's time must be devoted to RU or the sky will fall and the world will end.

My point is that OSU is playing a glorified exhibition game.
Now the Fiesta bowl is a glorified exhibition game? I don't get how people don't see this as a free commercial for RU. Every time OSU D does anything of note you will hear "that's Chris Ash the next head coach at RU". But sure, it's more important he be at RU while it's a dead period and present players are home on break.

It's also against ND which is pretty much the most watched team in the country.

I think it's just another example of fans being too insular as I've said in the past and not seeing the world beyond the borders of this board and team. If coaches decide to split time, they don't realize the standard SOP of how it usually might break down. There were people worried that he wouldn't be there for his own introductory press conference parsing words like "introduced" and "announcement." Really? Come on now. People were worried about him being here for the recruiting weekend and how is he going to hire coaches working for OSU until the bowl. Again have you not seen how these things happen in other places when coaches decide to split time. I mentioned the likely breakdown and then I posted the Nick Saban/Smart thing in other threads confirming my thoughts.

The first week and a 1/2 or so he's likely to be pretty much working for us recruiting and hiring coaches. He'll likely only be splitting during bowl prep and practice for OSU. I expect him to be here for the weekend and that much of his staff will be in place by the bowl game.

Would I prefer him to be here exclusively and finished with OSU? Yes. Is it the most ideal setup? Maybe not, but it's certainly very workable and their our ancillary PR benefits and recruiting pitch benefits to it. So you just roll with it, it's not the end all be all.

On the other hand suppose, unrealistically, the OSU plays badly. It is on national tv that Rutgers has done it again.
seems 50-50 on risk reward

I think the benefits of being here outweigh a couple of mentions on tv
That's part of it but how about the recruiting pitch about being loyal to your old coach, staff and players and seeing things through even if a new and better opportunity comes along.

I'd prefer him to be here the whole month, but this is something that is workable and I don't see as so detrimental to starting here if you see how these things usually break down over the next month.

Yea that would suck if the defense performed bad but let's hope that doesn't happen. Positive or negative it's just one game so can't read too much into but either way it's getting his name out there and he's still a national champion DC regardless of the outcome of the game. The more you get Chris Ash's name out the better, even if it was a bad performance.

It's a nice PR benefit and a little bit of a commercial but it's not the end all be all either. The point is while it may not be the most ideal for us, when coaches decide to split time it's usually a workable situation and it's not utterly detrimental to our job.

I have remained from getting involved in this discussion until now.

Give it a rest dudes. One month in the grand scheme of things is nothing.

(Yes, bowl are pointless now - just keep bleeding TV for money while it last. It is RU advertising as for the commentators will be talking about ASH).

That's for the playoffs!!!!

So ? Notice that it said "Nick Saban announced" as in - in this case of Kirby Smart, Nick Saban is basically in charge and telling how this is going to work ... not Kirby Smart - and Nick Saban effectively has the say on how the details are worked out - period. What ever enables Saban to be the guy making this announcement, it certainly does not matter to him whether you see it as it is a 'play off' or a 'major bowl' or a 'a glorified exhibition game' - it may seem to you that there should be some difference - but guys like Saban simply see 'to the conclusion of the playing season' as just that - some may say 'go ahead - we will get by without you' ... others may say 'we need you to see this through'.
