It would be foolish for a player at this level to not do this with the rules in place for an agent....whether it results in him staying or going isn't our decision, it will be up to how he performs....here's what every school goes through with this process over a 3 year period.
A) Recruit enters the national database, becomes a Top 100 recruit......Schools fall over each other trying to convince the kid to attend their school.....fan bases send tweets, message boards blow up about how badly they want the recruit, so they can start winning.
B) Recruit signs with program, expectations go through the roof, player is thrilled to be at school/university, clearly with goal of performing as well as they can, so they can generate interest for NBA.
C) Player performs up to most expectations for a freshman or sophomore, leads team in scoring or rebounding or assists and senses that he is months away from the money they craved since they were likely 14 or 15 years old. They become celebrity status on most campuses, where most schools essentially paper-mill the player through classes (not at RU but most other schools)....kid is really only there for basketball and takes minimal effort to handle schoolwork, while spending most hours with girls on campus or on-campus practice facility, honing their skills.
D) Player declares for draft and doesn't hire agent-Fan base goes ballistic, crushing the player because he didn't generate enough wins, PPG or make a difference to their season OR this player leaving early, ultimately crushes the schools hopes or being overhyped for the next season.
E) Fan base then micromanages and picks apart every negative aspect of what the player can't do or hasn't done, and says things like "good luck in Greece, Austria, Italy" because you aren't going to the NBA....fan base is now downplaying the talent of the kid, but that's only because he may leave and crush the dreams of a better season the next year.
F) Comments of delusion set in for fan base, who immediately gets angry at the player for not immediately changing his mind about coming back to school, because the schools fan base needs to know it's scholarship situation and this player is suddenly "not worth the effort", especially if he's almost certain to leave the following season....the sophomore or junior is now a "senior" to the fan base, who is disgruntled that they now have to replace the player and may not be able to.
There are kids from RU, NC State, Washington, Texas that all have declared the way Sanders has and in most cases, they wind up back at school, to improve their skills....But to get angry at the player for picking the school he did to showcase his talents is wrong. Ideally, RU lands elite talent where this becomes the norm OR do we want have a "recruiting ace" that focuses solely on 2 and 3* kids that won't ever get RU over the hump ??? Or do we want the better talent 4* kids of the region or the area that turn into a one or two year rental for that school, that are difference makers??
Relax folks, this is what big time recruits do...they believe they are destined to succeed and in most cases, they don't turn into Damian Lillard or Steph Curry, but they still earn a lot of money over a lot of years in the NBA, overseas or wherever they decide to play. It's not that big a deal....hopefully Sanders has a great sophomore season at RU, leaves after improving his stock and RU launches a player to the next level......it sounds better than crushing the kid or saying "he's not good enough", when it's just anxiety that he may leave the school and the program loses out on a player.
