Sanders Entering Draft

I'm shocked that no one picked up that he said "Come back to College". Then mentions Rutgers in the next sentence. Certainly seems to imply that he was saying he'll come back to A college, and then thanks Rutgers for everything in the past.

Then again, with how terribly written most of these statements are, it's probably foolish to read for subtext...

Exactly. It sounds like he is gone. The fact that he didn't come back to school was fishy.

Pikiell probably will have an easier job recruiting a point guard now.

Odds of him recruiting a point guard as good as Corey --- 0%.

Although you must be pleased, you have basically been calling for his transfer for weeks now. I would have felt better about the situation if this staff had been able to convince Corey to come back for one more year.

Difference is Whitehead right now is a much better player and NBA prospect (pains me to say that). And BTW Whitehead declaring didn't do Corey any favors!

Not what I was eluding to. Just saying Whitehead declared and didn't sign with an agent. Many players now "declare" to get feedback to see what they need to work on in the eyes of the NBA.

I don't think we will see him here again either. Of course, I hope he comes back but I know he only expected to stay here 2 years at most. In year 1 he's had a baby, a couple of suspensions, and a new coach....that's a lot.... and he's certainly not used to playing on any team for very long. I guess we'll know soon enough.

I don;t think we see him in scarlet again. He's a BB player and not a student athlete. New coach at RU on a very bad team. Not much in it for Corey unless he enjoys going to college in NJ. I doubt that is the case.

Or he comes back and plays his way into the first round, with development he's a late lottery pick after year 3.

some posters elsewhere are saying Sanders isnt enrolled in RU THIS SEMESTER..IS HE?

It would be foolish for a player at this level to not do this with the rules in place for an agent....whether it results in him staying or going isn't our decision, it will be up to how he performs....here's what every school goes through with this process over a 3 year period.

A) Recruit enters the national database, becomes a Top 100 recruit......Schools fall over each other trying to convince the kid to attend their school.....fan bases send tweets, message boards blow up about how badly they want the recruit, so they can start winning.

B) Recruit signs with program, expectations go through the roof, player is thrilled to be at school/university, clearly with goal of performing as well as they can, so they can generate interest for NBA.

C) Player performs up to most expectations for a freshman or sophomore, leads team in scoring or rebounding or assists and senses that he is months away from the money they craved since they were likely 14 or 15 years old. They become celebrity status on most campuses, where most schools essentially paper-mill the player through classes (not at RU but most other schools)....kid is really only there for basketball and takes minimal effort to handle schoolwork, while spending most hours with girls on campus or on-campus practice facility, honing their skills.

D) Player declares for draft and doesn't hire agent-Fan base goes ballistic, crushing the player because he didn't generate enough wins, PPG or make a difference to their season OR this player leaving early, ultimately crushes the schools hopes or being overhyped for the next season.

E) Fan base then micromanages and picks apart every negative aspect of what the player can't do or hasn't done, and says things like "good luck in Greece, Austria, Italy" because you aren't going to the NBA....fan base is now downplaying the talent of the kid, but that's only because he may leave and crush the dreams of a better season the next year.

F) Comments of delusion set in for fan base, who immediately gets angry at the player for not immediately changing his mind about coming back to school, because the schools fan base needs to know it's scholarship situation and this player is suddenly "not worth the effort", especially if he's almost certain to leave the following season....the sophomore or junior is now a "senior" to the fan base, who is disgruntled that they now have to replace the player and may not be able to.

There are kids from RU, NC State, Washington, Texas that all have declared the way Sanders has and in most cases, they wind up back at school, to improve their skills....But to get angry at the player for picking the school he did to showcase his talents is wrong. Ideally, RU lands elite talent where this becomes the norm OR do we want have a "recruiting ace" that focuses solely on 2 and 3* kids that won't ever get RU over the hump ??? Or do we want the better talent 4* kids of the region or the area that turn into a one or two year rental for that school, that are difference makers??

Relax folks, this is what big time recruits do...they believe they are destined to succeed and in most cases, they don't turn into Damian Lillard or Steph Curry, but they still earn a lot of money over a lot of years in the NBA, overseas or wherever they decide to play. It's not that big a deal....hopefully Sanders has a great sophomore season at RU, leaves after improving his stock and RU launches a player to the next level......it sounds better than crushing the kid or saying "he's not good enough", when it's just anxiety that he may leave the school and the program loses out on a player.

Just so everyone understands the rule -- it allows early entrants to withdraw their names by June 13, which is ten days BEFORE the draft. The player has to make the decision before he knows for sure where he stands.

To me there is a clear litmus test. If you are going to be picked in the first round, then you are guaranteed a minimum of $2 million (for the 30th pick) and you take it. If you're a second rounder, then you are guaranteed nothing and you stay in school. Problem is, you don't have that information.

First of all, he is NOT going to rate out and get in the first two rounds. If he doesn't come back to Rutgers he would hopefully get drafted into the developmental league. Corey is getting some bad advice right now. He's not seasoned enough as a shooter to make the NBA. Personally, I think he will come back and that's why he didn't hire an agent. But let's say he does come back. He would maybe stick around for one more year and then he's gone.

I have always hated what the NBA concocted and what the NCAA allowed. The Lebron's and Kobe's of the world come around maybe every 15 years. The kids out of HS are not ready for the NBA, the money, or the pressure associated with it. Similarly, I think the NCAA has done a disservice to allow kids at the age of 18 or 19 to play one year in college (rent a player) and then if they "rate" out they immediately leave. I hate what's going on at the elite schools like what Duke did last year or what Calipari does most of the time at Kentucky. Like football, I think these kids should spend a minimum of 3 years in college before getting drafted. Some may argue that the elite teams will then have stacked lineups for 3 straight years. Maybe, maybe not. Maybe it will force the elite schools to change their recruiting practices because if kids stick around for 3 years, maybe some of the elite kids coming out of HS may go to another school where they get immediate playing times.

Regardless, I hate seeing a team like Duke last year winning a NC and then all 5 guys leave for the NBA. I think the rules promulgated by the NBA and allowed by the NCAA are absurd.

I hope Sanders gets what he has worked for and gets into the draft, gets picked up by a team.

I will say, I am a huge fan of Sanders but his stats are inflated. People know that. He was not scoring 16 pts against the best players. Maybe 10 pts a game. His athleticism is there.

I think he comes back to RU for one more year. There are only two rounds to the draft, and the pay substantially drops off. With how a lot of our athletes are, they buy a house for another person, buy another car, etc, and you are left with 500,000. He should come back to RU for a year and only take finance classes, or financial management.

I wish the best for Sanders. I would love to see him in an NBA uniform.

Speaking of Rutgers players and the NBA, what are the chances Kadeem Jack is on an NBA team next season ?

Can you say Quincy Douby?? Except no indication that Sanders is not a good teammate the way Q was not. Did that will he-won't he after his freshman and soph years, flirting a little with Louisville and others, but in the end coming back before leaving for the NBA as a junior. Saw him in person once against the Magic, and he looked lost on defense, and generally not ready for the NBA--went on to fame and fortune of a sort in China. Everyone is telling the underclassmen to declare--just don't hire an agent. The NBA teams can give them a good idea on where they stand, and where they must improve. Will be a big wakeup call for all these kids that have been told by the wrong people that they are first rounders fer sure, fer sure. Giving players the chance to perform for NBA teams, and get a line on where they stand has to be a good thing, especially in light of some serious senior talent coming out--Hield, Ellis and the rest. Sanders can only benefit from the experience, and know what he must improve at down the road.

Jack has been running the pick and roll a lot more in the d league. Something Jordan never capitalized on. Big miss there.

IMO, Sanders will be overseas or in the D league playing next year, he's not a student athlete, clearly. And will get paid somewhere. Time to move on.

This draft process puts the coach in a tough spot as he doesn't know his certain roster for at least another month now, he has to recruit like sanders is not coming back

His last sentence sounds like a "good-bye RU" message. I'll also be surprised if he is here for next season, though I don't think there's much chance he gets drafted. Someone else commented about how he spends 1 year max at each stop, so...

No problem with Corey testing the waters, since the rules allow for it, hopefully one day he'll donate his year or two - and then some - back to the school that welcomed him with open arms. That being said I can't believe a few people around here were actually thinking he'd stick around for 2 more seasons, in a thread last week, not a chance.

Most players are doing this. It really means nothing under the new rules unless he signs with an agent.

Better for us that he's spending all this time exploring the NBA and not exploring another college.
Sanders while he is considering his options better also concentrate on academics to ensure eligibility for next season.

hope the motley crew that wanted Jordan gone realizes the Pikell era is already over. Enjoy the 9 win season now that he's gone.

this is a douchebag post...Jordan needed to go because he was terrible at running the program, nothing to do with Sanders...and are you losing your marbles because of Corey...Im not. This is a kid about himself....if he comes back next year he is gone the next. If he leaves this year so be it. Pikiell will then start recruiting and building around 4 years players. One or two and dones do not work at this school for program building.

When is the NBA draft? Will it be soon, now that Kentucky has been knocked out of the NCAAs? Or is it during the summer? Just wondering because the timing will have an impact on RU if Corey gets drafted.

And this is also why you dont keep vetrone just to keep cory. Hes either gone this year (doubtful) or next

bingo...and those still pining for Jordan too because Corey would stay...are you kidding me...no player is above the program. Steve will assess where the program is at and decide accordingly. We desperately need a culture change around here

Sanders announced via Twitter that he will put his name in the Draft, but will not hire an agent (leaving him the possibility to come back to school).

That's why I said it is going to be a bumpy ride.......and more rumblings within the program about possible transfers.
