Schiano to OSU replacing Ash

Makes sense, since I seem to remember Greg and Urban being close and coaching clinics together.

Yes that are friends and share some traits. Greg was at some OSU practices last year and worked with Ash. How weird is all this lol?

.
"Last week, Schiano spent time with another powerful coaching friend, as he visited with Urban Meyer's Ohio State Buckeyes. Schiano, wearing an Ohio State jacket, attended three practices and offered some input on the Buckeyes defense.

Ohio State's pass defense ranked 110th in the nation last season, and the unit allowed 115 points during the final three games. Ohio State hired Arkansas defensive coordinator Chris Ash to join Luke Fickell as co-defensive coordinator.

Ash said Schiano's presence at practice and in the meeting rooms last week was beneficial.

"Coach Schiano has been a very successful coach at a lot of different stops," Ash told reporters. "He's a great defensive mind, very smart, very intelligent. He got a chance to come out and evaluate our practices. He's watched some film with us. Got to pick his brain on some things whether it be scheme things or fundamental things, just different philosophies on defense. So, it's been great to have him around for a couple days."

This post makes absolutely zero sense. OSU is recruiting 4/5 stars from all over the country. They only have about 25 spots each year.

This was a move to get OSU back into cherry picking the NJ top 10. They lost out on Gary and Walker to Michigan. We have never been in that battle. For Ash to be successful he has to land some of those kids and it just got significantly harder with OSU now focusing on the "State of Rutgers".

What this means .........

For RU recruiting - absolutely nothing. Urban can already get from RU in NJ whoever he wants. If anything, it makes it easier for Ash to recruit NJ cause he can play the card: "Do you want to play for a coach on the way down" (Greg) or for one who is "On the way up"?

From an OSU fan's perspective, they're not worried about the impact of this to Rutgers. They're worried about the impact on their games against MSU and Michigan. MSU's D continues to give them fits. Can Greg coach the O?

In terms of whether who turned down who - I think it's now clear that Rutgers was the one who wasn't interested in Greg and not the other way around.

It is also sad that in his introduction press conference Ash said something along the lines that his goal is to ultimately get the program back to where Schiano left it.

This will make it a little harder for young Coach Ash to escape the long shadow that GS still casts over the Rutgers program (if this board is any indication). Now seen as a 1-1 head to head trade if you will and conference rivals, this should make for some interesting story lines. They will meet only once a year on the football schedule, but it now appears that their careers may be somehow inexorably linked.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling, NOT. whether it be Urban Myer or Schiano they will only be interested in cherry picking 2 or 3 NJ kids in any year, Urban was doing just fine recruiting those kids as it was, GS will not have a huge impact, because they will not be interested in that many jersey kids.

IMO, Urban Meyer made this hire because he wants an elite defense that can win a national championship. Recruiting New Jersey with Schiano as his DC would be a nice bonus, but I can't imagine it was a primary factor in the decision.

I'd be much more concerned about him going to a school with little in state talent.

Ohio produces a ton, and OSU is expected to land those kids. Worst case would have been him at a school like Sarahcuse.

Ash is a bulldog. He isn't going to concede Jersey to Schiano or anyone else. Let's see what happens.

I see Schiano doing a couple years at OSU and then getting a DC job in the NFL.

I see Urban going to the NFL and Greg, after making connections with the OSU faithful, becoming the HC at OSU. At least that's Urban and Greg's plan. This is Urban doing his buddy a favor. Time will tell how it will play out.

They are good friends and Schiano and Meyer talked regularly and worked together at clinics or camps. Schiano will build a scary good defense at OSU.
Yup, especially now that he is only concentrating on the defense. That is Schianos bread and butter!

He's walking into a team better than even the best RU team he built, which is upsetting. Was hoping he was done with college or finishing at RU

I also wouldn't read too much into our interest (or lack thereof) in Schiano as our HC based on him making this move. While we might have had no interest, it's also possible we did reach out to Greg and he turned us down because he thought he was getting the Miami job.

Yup. It's another example of people here being too insular here thinking Schiano was still the hot name he used to be. Thinking DC in college is beneath him or even mid major HC and only DC in the NFL would be the lowest he should go. Could he have gotten a job? Sure because all it takes is convincing one, just like the TB owners but the likelihood wasn't good.

This is very good spot for him to learn from Urban, rehab his image and then for sure he could get another HC job in college and he'd probably be better off having done it. I didn't want Schiano this go around but the next go around for someone I think he could make a good candidate after a 2 year stint or so with Urban.
oh shut up on your self. GS in Columbus is no good for us. This sems like a spiteful thing for him to do..

If Meyer leaves, I think they bring back Herman. But I don't think Meyer's going anywhere until he retires. I don't think Schiano would be in the running for a HC job there. But you're right; time will tell.

Gonna be very interesting to see how coaches in NJ react to Greg selling "the state of Ohio" to them and their kids. Thinking it might not fly as well as some of you are thinking it will. Hopefully I'm right.
I would think he'll have to make sure his message is aligned with whatever Urban's messaging is. It's not Schiano's program.

I think Schiano sees this job as a path back to a P5 HC job. I always thought he wanted in the NFL, but maybe he tested the waters and didn't see a path to an HC or DC job there, so perhaps this was as good as it was going to get.

Not good for us why? People just say that but don't elaborate because there is nothing to elaborate. He doesn't add anything that Urban and the OSU brand didn't already have.

I don't see anything spiteful. He finally realized his value and has come down to earth now knowing what his name is really worth these days. It's a great landing spot for him and in a couple years I think he'll have opportunities to coach again. When I said I didn't want him back here as HC during this search and gave the reasoning no one could give a rebuttlal even though I said I was open ears for it. You get classified as "hater" for some dumb ass reason as if he's a mortal enemy or something. Now again I give another dispassionate analysis of Schiano, his future prospects and how it affects us. I don't see anything spiteful about it. He's doing something that is great for his career and why they hell shouldn't he. Learning under Urban for a couple years, rehabbing his image and then putting himself out there again and having a good chance to get a HC job like many of Urban's assistants do.

Biggest freaking headache.Cannot believe this was not preplanned. Hate on Delaney, Meyer and Alvarez. One week later OSU owns Jersey. Little hope now.

What does Ash say? I worked for Urban? GS says Urbn replaced him with me and I can get you to the NFL. Majorly pissed.

Wow, for your sake, I hope this is snark. A medication adjustment might be in order.

Oh, no. This is definitely a move out of spite. Greg is mad at RU. No doubt.

OSU already gets whoever they want. Anyone that thought we would be going head to head over recruits now is delusional.

Where do you see spite? He's gonna move his family out of Florida a place he's said to be comfortable living with his family out of spite? I don't see it. I see a guy realizing his value, coming down to earth and finding a great landing spot to rehab his career. I can't blame him for that.

It's bad news because he can recruit NJ and he will be a very good DC.

They already get who they want and he is replacing an already great DC. OSU is pretty much in the same place they were last year. What is smart for Neyer is that he knows he got a very good DC and should expect no drop off from last year.

OSU can recruit NJ without Schiano. If anything this is good for us. Schiano-OSU is just one opponent in recruiting now instead of say Schiano HC somewhere and OSU separately.

Better he goes to OSU, then to Syracuse, Maryland or UVA. As others have said, they already get who they want from NJ (and everywhere else). The threat of GS was going to anoher regional P5 school to come compete head to head with us.

"Shut up on your self"?

And the whole spiteful theory; what's that about? Who's he being spiteful to, RU? For what reason? He left RU; RU didn't do anything to him.

Greg to RU: "Hey you guys have an opening!"

Rutgers: "Yeah, you interested?"

Greg: "Sure, but uhm, only if I don't get the Miami job"

Rutgers: "Well, in that case, we will just move on then" "Good luck!"
