Shilique Calhoun Quote

RU dropped the ball with Calhoun. He was very high on Rutgers from the start. He took off his junior year but they were fixated on other options on the DL. The sad part is that he almost didn't wind up at MSU. He walked off the Midd North basketball team in the middle of the game. He was thrown off the team and almost lost his schollie at MSU.

People who are surprised at this quote simply explains how oblivious people are regarding recruiting in NJ. He was being recruited at a time during Rutgers "glory days" of recruiting and basically speaks to how NJ recruits viewed Rutgers at that time. This is why it irritates me to no end how folks don't appreciate what Greg Schiano did for Rutgers or the effect of the 2006 season. The power of the Chop, the pride of the Block R, the scarlet fever that gripped the entire State that year. The effect of that year rippled for many years after.

People now mocking the Alabama reference simply have no clue (or perhaps simply choose to forget what happened that memorable year now almost ten years ago). For many many NJ kids, Rutgers was their "Alabama". Nothing to do with accomplishments, but simply how Rutgers was revered by these kids. This is why it is very ignorant and down right despicable, that when NJ recruits don't come here, our own alumns and fans downgrade Rutgers and say stupid things like "well, what do you expect? We're not Alabama". Or, in the case of others, they choose to demonize the recruits and say dumb things like "oh, NJ kids wont come here? well, we don't need them any way" - "Florida and Maryland recruits are better". Or the worse comment of all - "a two star Florida recruit is the same as a four star NJ anyway". Simply clueless comments.

From ESPN's Big Ten Blog:

"It’s going to be special," Calhoun said. "Growing up in New Jersey, (Rutgers) was one of the bigger universities in my eyes. Like I said, when you come from New Jersey it is Alabama to you. That’s all you know. That’s the university that’s embedded into your heart. I think it’s going to be special."

First time I ever heard anyone compare RU football to the Crimson Tide.

Because NJ is soooo much like Alabama,
Hope Calhoun gets his DNA shaken / stirred / RU pulls off and upset.

Rutgers: The Scarlet Surf !

Don't forget Knowshon Moreno lived by North, but went to South, so the the South standard for a while has been to pull players in from North. Back in the early days (class of 81) North owned South. Our family had grads in 71,75,81,83.
The transition to Souths dominance over North has several reasons. But what kills me is that it was ushered in by a North grad when Bob Generelli, a former North player/alum became the HC at South and really put them on the map. Before Antonucci it was Generelli. The guy even made a crap program like Raritan a power for a while.

The real issue is that in Middletown allows kids from Bayshore Middle School to choose North or South. Moreno lived in Belford but went to Bayshore Middle. He then has the choice to North or South based on this "split school" crap. If he chose North, he got bused. If South, gotta find your own way there based on living in Belford. Of course Antonucci was willing to find him a way to South every morning. Don't blame Moreno, blame the system. There are plenty of other players who played at South who have done the same thing and belonged at North.

Agreed! You can't teach 6'5 245 as a senior in high school, a player like this is what you take a chance on with a final 'ship
