Shooter in the portal

“Stating facts” is complete cop out bullshit and you know it.

Noah did not work out for us but he shot 36% from three so that was not the issue. The “fact” that he shot badly if you take out the good games is technically true but also ****ing stupid.
Yeah, Noah's issue was not his offense, thought he performed better than I expected there. Defense....

The point of his post was not to say we need to get a Gohlke type. It was to shine a light on how bad some of our players (Davis and JWill) shot the ball and that an upgrade should be priority number one in the portal. Bringing in a starting level guard who can shoot the ball should be the goal. What a great problem to have if we were able to bring in a two guard that was good enough to bump JWill to coming off the bench as sixth man. These type of players exist, issue is can we get them here next year……will be an interesting offseason. JWill feels like a slashing, defensive minded third guard if you start three guards or a high energy sixth man who brings scoring and runs the offense when starters leave the game off the bench. He is definitely not a traditional, shooting two guard in the sense of being a threat at the three point line. Neither is JMike. Let’s get a guy or two of them here who are threats at the 3 point line and JWill and JMike would make for great parts of a high energy, pressing defensive unit that we could hit teams with a whole different defensive look every game. My hope is we get a quality guard or two who can shoot and Pike will likely have 3 guards on the floor a lot. MSU does this with Walker, Hoggard and Akins.

Um okay - then that’s perhaps an even dumber argument with respect to Jeremiah considering the kid only attempted 24 threes all season.

What's a dumb argument?
That JWill isn't a 3pt threat that will pull help defenders out of the paint at the end of games?

Exactly. In 12 games he only attempt 24 3pt shots. That's not a threat.
You want to say he shot so few because of the defense? Sure maybe. He's just been waiting to start launching 3s.

But if I'm HC Pike I'm not going into next season "hoping" that JWill has secretly been a 3pt threat after 3 years of not being one. Just waiting for the moment to take and make3a bunch of 3s.

20-21 Temple

11-34 (32.4%)

21-22 Temple

12-52 (23.1%)

23-24 Rutgers

No - the narrative I’m calling out is the messenging - “wow this kid made 10 threes in one game while J Will couldn’t do that in a whole season. See how awful that is?” If that’s your intended point - that’s what’s dumb.

J Will isn’t a perimeter shooter, but he took 24 threes all season and made 5. This Oakland kid took 20 threes in one game and happened to go crazy and hit 10 of them. These are both massively small samples that mean literally nothing. That is all. What J Will did at Temple had nothing to do with your point as you provided current year data to try to make an exaggerated point. J Will isn’t going to be a great perimeter shooter. He doesn’t have to. He just needs to take enough to keep a D honest.

Once again, the point was we need upgraded shooters brought in. We need someone who is a consistent threat and can actually make threes. Jury is still out on whether Gavin can be counted on, JMike is not a shooter, JWill is below average, and Dylan we have not seen perform or shoot at the college level yet. Priority should be to bring in two shooters (2 guards or one guard and one forward) to add to the roster. If Gavin doesn’t pan out next year, if JMike still can’t hit water if he fell out of a boat next year, if JWill is still below average from three next year, and if Dylan can’t consistently hit the three next year then we’re right back where we were last year as far as terrible shooting. We need to bring in upgraded shooters to avoid last year’s debacle. Hopefully we bring in shooters, and Gavin starts consistently knocking down threes, and Dylan also makes threes, then it won’t matter much how JWill and JMike shoot the three. They can provide their strengths to the team while others provide the shooting.

Yes - we need to add a primary rotation shooter to the line up and ideally a back up kid who is good enough to come in for spot minutes and hit shots. We do not need to replace J Will so that we have 2 sharp shooters in the line up. How many sharp shooters do you think our 2019-20 and 2020-21 lines up had? And no - JY is not close to a shooter. He had one good year shooting the ball at RU and reverted to his norm at Oregon. Tez couldn’t shoot. Ron was up and down - 2 good shooting years only. Caleb and our bigs not shooters. We brought in Yeboah for one year who could shoot.

These teams were cusp bubble teams and had zero Lottery pick talents on them. So no - we don’t need to add more than one 20+ minute sharp shooter because if we do - we’re likely going to be compromising other important things to having a complete team that J Will brings. I don’t know why people think we’re going to be able to hand pick 3-4 of the best portal players like it is a candy shop.

We need shooters but I still believe that Gavin is going to play big minutes next year and will thrive with a backcourt of Dylan and JWill. He’s going to have a lot of open 3s. But who knows - based on last year maybe it never happens. We’ll know by Christmas 2024 though.

Everyone would agree and hope that happens.
However, I would also hope HC Pike isn't going into next year wishing that happens.
That would be more of a bonus that a need.

I think it’s incorrect to use the 19-20 and 20-21 teams as a model for why next year will be successful without shooters. Those two teams had one, then two elite rim defenders and a future national defensive player of the year. It was a different model. It’s becoming clearer Rutgers wants to switch more toward offensive and proven shooters are needed.

Rutgers needs a Spencer type shooter on the court at all times to complement scoring from Bailey and Harper. It could be two different players sharing time at the forward positions.

Many seem to want another Cam. Buy looking at our roster holes it would be nice to have a 2 way 4 or 5 who can be minimum in the 30%+ range from 3 to keep defenses honest and pull out the interior defenders to create driving space for Ace/Dylan.

We need a sharp shooter at guard. Also adding a stretch 4 who can shoot and pop outside as a threat to stretch the defense is another need, doesn’t need to be a sharp shooter, but needs to be able to have ability to make a three and be a consistent threat to the defense to drag his man outside. Maybe this is provided by Ace, but hoping we have a different player who helps open things in the paint for Ace and Dylan. We don’t need to acquire 4 shooters through the portal, but one at guard and a competent one at forward should be what RU is looking for. RU needs a backup plan if Gavin does not turn into the sharp shooter he is hoped to be. If he does, then that’s great and it’s one more in the mix, but Pike needs a backup plan as opposed to blind faith reliance that Gavin has the shooting department all covered next year.
