We have 10 years of division one basketball playing experience on out roster entering this year....

And seven of them are our fifth guard and our fourth power forward/center

We will have to play a lot of close games before we Learn to win them in a crisp manner. Likely, we will have to fall into close wins (bummed tonight could not be one) and lose lots of close games (and we will find ways to snare defeat from the jaws of victory)....

Let's not jump off the cliff and kill people over the tonight....

I inexplicably agree. I'm very disappointed, but not yet discouraged. Obviously, I need to have my head examined!

No one is jumping off the cliff Shack, especially not me. But stop making excuses for this team or this coach. It's inexplicable that we lost this game and that falls on Jordan, because he controls the game with his substitutions and his plays. He failed big time.

This was going to happen at some point this year. I am very disappointed, but not surprised. I am not blaming this on Jordan. It was a group effort.

Shack...we may have a conditioning problem.

In my mind the game was lost because Corey Sanders deferred to Bishop Daniels down the stretch. The ball needed to be in his hands and we needed to run our sets. Instead Bishop took over and we really never ran our plays. St. Johns had a late possession in zone and it was never identified.

Why didn't Corey take control? He was huffing and puffing. He wasnt the only one.

Also a good explanation for FTs

FIG, that's why I enjoy reading posts from guys that know the game of basketball. This was a young team losing on the road by 2 points early in the season. It happens. A learning experience for all.

Meanwhile, Fox Sports keeps re-running the non-calls on Daniels and Sanders.

St Johns may be the youngest team of the power 5 plus one (Big East). This was a matchup of probably of two of the top 6 worst basketball programs of that Power 5 plus one.

I think Corey's deferring all year so far. Maybe all the pre-season criticism got to his head and he's trying to prove naysayers wrong. I can't believe he passed it up at the end off a dribble drive. We need him to be the EXACT player we all saw on YouTube. Some of us drooled over those videos, some of us were offended. But we and he will succeed if he is THAT player. Take control Corey and excite!

Before the game started, the "excuses" would have been perfectly valid. If I just saw the final score and the fact the game was on the road, the "excuses" would have been valid.

But, you're up 16 with 14 to go -- meaning not only do you have a big lead, but the other team scored 29 points in 26 minutes. How, exactly, does that same team then score more points in 14 than it did in 26? How, exactly, do your starters combine to get to the line nine times and MAKE TWO??? As a team, 5 of 14? Is that OK in high school? F experience as an excuse. Shoot a horrible 50 percent from the line and you win. NO EXCUSES. Awful, awful loss.

You don't have to be experienced to win that game. You just have to avoid being stupid.

As a casual observer of basketball, I can only say that it looked like Rutgers became a street game with that big lead. One and dones over and over again while SJ came back and pecked away steadily at that lead.
RU showed absolutely no sign of discipline in controlling the tempo of the game. All they continued to do was race down the court and either force it to the basket or launch a long range bomb. No attempt at eating up the clock. How can this not be on the coaching? If you have players who are not listening to what they are told to do, sit them on the bench.

Didn't notice the conditioning so I won't opine on that.

Freshman are going to/tend to defer to Seniors early in their careers. Living in DC and with a lot of Terp alums as friends, family, connections I watch them a bunch. Melo Trimble is one of my favorite players to watch and has been since someone told me about him as a HS Junior (he played with Etou and Butts in HS so I took in a couple of games). Trimble deferred to Robert Pack and Dez Wells for the first 6 to 8 Terp games last season. Then he realized he was the best player on the floor. It'll click for Corey. Only Game Three.

very logical....it cost us the game

I agree with Shack and Hoops. If we can play the way we played for the first 33 minutes, then we are fine. The offensive sets produce high percentage shots, and then kick outs for the three point ball for Williams. I have to say, it is fun to watch when run as it is supposed to. The rebounding and free throws killed us. Missing the front end of one and ones became in effect a turnover down the stretch.

This nonsense that game was lost by EJ because of substitution patterns is just that, nonsense. We got to the line down the stretch, which is what you want, and the free throws were missed, pure and simple.

I'm disappointed in the loss, but its not the end of the world. I would have been more down if we lost this one by 18 like in the past and the offense consisted of one on one play and chucking threes.

Let's correct the rebounding and free throws, take care of business on Saturday and lets roll this team back out on the court in Vegas. I am anxious to see what happens over the course of this week.

Cant argue. Kid will get it. If Eddie can teach Myles to play PG he can certainly teach Corey.

You (of all posters on this board) have to love his defense. I am really surprised how good he is on that end of the floor. And he is very solid in transition. Mike Williams is going to score 10+ per because Corey really is solid on the break. Running a college half court offense at this level takes time. I think it will come.

Honestly, Corey has been better through three games than I expected (and that is not a knock but a compliment). I am impressed with the maturity he has shown on both ends of the floor through 3 games. It shows you what a difference a pure PG has on those around him when he knows how to distribute the ball and where to distribute it.

He wants to play good defense and the effort is there so the results are good. He has some deficiencies getting thru screens, but he is a freshman and is trying real hard.

I am VERY concerned about this team (especially Corey)late in the season hitting the wall. Eddie has to be disciplined and keep the minutes down on the youngsters.

Thru 3 games I am VERY VERY VERY happy with Corey's game. Refreshing to see a guy penetrating with the intent to get others good shots. Others must follow...

VERY Concerned? One of my comments was going to be how I like that EJ is not force feeding kids big minutes (like he did Mack last year) so I was less fearful of that happening again.

Corey: 34 v. Howard/30 v. SJU
Williams: 23 v. Howard/33 v. SJU
Freeman: 29 v. Howard/28 v. SJU
Bishop: 20 v. Howard/33 v. SJU

Those are our guys who have played the most minutes. I don't see it. Small sample size obviously. But I am, like you, watching it. Also, to be fair, can't be all over Eddie for having Bishop run the show when a decent chunk of that is with Corey on the bench so as not to have him playing big minutes this early (not directed at you just at the board in general as that seems to be a popular sentiment).

If I am not mistaken Corey sat a decent chunk of that 2nd half run by SJU.

So far it has been pretty good. My comment was more based on what happened last year.

I might have given Corey more of a rest in half 1 where he just gave him a minute break around the media timeout. I thought Foreman played way too many minutes in the 1st half.

I am very happy that he gave Corey the rest in the 2nd half. In hindsight it probably cost us the game, but HAS to be done.

We beat Vanderbilt last year by running our core players beyond E. I think it caught up with us later.

I want/we need Corey to give max effort on the defensive end. he needs bare minimum to sit thru 2 media timeouts per half as a freshman. Rest from 12:30 until play resumes after the 8:00 media TO. It's real hard to do, i get it.

Was just looking at the SHU box score from last night and your post got me thinking.

Whitehead: 33/27/36

Coaching for his job Willard may have this kid on fumes by Game 20 (like Mack last year).
