Sierra Calhoun to Rutgers

So she played at Duke, transferred to Ohio State, and now she is going to play at RU?? Interesting. I wonder why she didn't stay at OSU?

This is a great pickup. Calhoun can shoot!! She played in Kelsey Mitchell’s shadow.

“Starting in all 34 of the Buckeyes’ games this season, Calhoun scored 11.8 points per game, the fourth-most on the team. She was a primary ball-handler at times, taking the pressure off Mitchell, and often took the role as a sharpshooter. She shot 37.4 percent from the field, while making 35.8 percent of her 3-point attempts this season”

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women’s basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer has announced the addition of Ohio State transfer Sierra Calhoun to the 2018-19 roster, it was announced on (Monday). A 6-0 guard originally from Brooklyn, New York will have one year of eligibility to play with the Scarlet Knights and will be available immediately.

“We are excited to welcome back Sierra back home to play for the Scarlet Knights,” said head coach C. Vivian Stringer. “Sierra has made herself known as a tremendous 3-point shooter and has the ability to score like (recent graduate) Tyler Scaife. Her ball handling is tight, you can isolate her and she can still post it up. She is a prolific scorer who can do it all. Sierra is a WNBA caliber player reminiscent of some of our great local talent that we have signed in the past such as Essence Carson, Epiphanny Prince and Kia Vaughn. We are excited that the likes of Sierra and (rising redshirt sophomore guard) Arella Guirantes from the New York area have chosen to come back home and play for the Scarlet Knights.”

Calhoun had been a member of the Ohio State roster since 2015, joining the Buckeye program following her freshman season at Duke. Altogether, the Christ the King High School product has averaged 10.5 points and 3.6 rebounds and shot 36 percent from long range during her collegiate career to date.

During the Buckeyes conference championship run, she averaged 13.7 points and 3.3 rebounds for the Big Ten title. A Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection, Calhoun netted a season-high 21 points against Florida (Dec. 6), including a career-best 8-of-8 performance from the line, and followed with back-to-back 20-point outings in contests with Dartmouth (Dec. 15) and Cincinnati (Dec. 17).

She also had several memorable Big Ten performances including knocking down five-of-six 3-point attempts in contests against Penn State (Feb. 1) and Iowa (Feb. 12).

Kicking off her college career at Duke in 2015-16, Calhoun started all 13 nonconference games as the Blue Devils’ primary ball-handler. Named to the Preseason ACC Newcomer Watch List, she averaged 10.1 points and 3.8 rebounds and scored a season-high 21 points, going 4-of-7 from beyond the arc along with seven rebounds against Buffalo (Nov. 25). Prior to the collegiate ranks, Calhoun was a McDonald’s, Parade Magazine, WBCA All-American at Christ the King High School in New York that produced notable women’s basketball alumnae and WNBA standouts Chamique Holdsclaw, Sue Bird and Tina Charles. At Christ the King, Calhoun collected 1,893 points, 700 rebounds, 234 assists and 370 steals and as a senior was named the USA Today New York, Gatorade New York, MSG Varsity New York City and New York Daily News New York Player of the Year having averaged 24.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per contest. During her career, she led her high school team to two Brooklyn-Queens Catholic High School Athletic Association titles and a regular season championship in addition to picking up first team all-state, all-city and all-tri-state honors as a sophomore, junior and senior. While as Christ the King, Calhoun also participated in the 2014 U18, 2012 U17 and 2011 U16 USA Basketball National Team Trials. She was rated the No. 7 recruit in the 2014 class by Prospect Nation, No. 13 by All Star Girls Report and No. 16 by ESPN Hoopgurlz.

Calhoun made 37% of her 3-pointers in two years at OSU. 58% of her total FG attempts were from 3. She's a long-range specialist who can hit at a pretty good clip.
