I think we need to do three things:

1 - Run the ball

This will be much easier if Gio's hamstring is closer to 100% than it has been. If we can't run the ball and control the clock, we're toast because our defense has been on the field too long this season, and is susceptible to breaking down

2 - Blitz, Blitz, Blitz!!

What do we have to lose? throw everything and the kitchen sink. Hopefully environment will be loud and raucous, and aid our defense. Environment was fantastic two years ago, and i hope it is replicated. Yes we are taking the risk of PSUs wide receivers going off, and if blacknall beats us, so be it. But thats better than sitting back and watching Barkley run over our defense, like last year.

3 - Connect on a few shots downfield.

Gio's got the arm to do this, and connected on a 37 yard TD pass in the Minnesota game. OL has been playing better as of late, and last game allowed zero sacks. If we can get the passing game going, it'll spur the running game.

4 - Avoid Turnovers

We're not good enough to win if we lose the turnover battle.

There hasn't been one complete 60 minute good game all season long. I think we're due.

Contain their QB, interfere on every pass they throw over 40 yards (15 and 1st < 40 1st), stop the run which we can do. Install a few new plays on offense and block a little better. And most of all play with high energy and power you are a Rutgers Scarlet Fucing Knight not a loser.

1. Move the pocket

2. Contain McWhatever

3. Win the turnover battle

4. Get pretty lucky

The key to winning : score more points or give them wrong directions to stadium and when they don't show: declare Forfeit :cool2:

1 - This is a distinct possibility but we are 12 deep along the DL and tend to get better as the game progresses because we simply wear people down through sheer volume of players. If Cabinda and Bell play, you're in trouble. Cabinda is an absolute wizard running that defense.

2 - Maybe. The problem with blitzing is that, even with a bum ankle, McSorley has fantastic awareness and he's elusive. Sacks are not easy to come by with him and he's crafty so you better disguise them or he'll make you pay. In regards to Blacknall, he's the guy who will beat you deep but the three guys to worry about in the passing game are Godwin, Gesicki and Barkley. Because our OL is so banged up you are going to be at an advantage because Gesicki and/or Barkley are often going to have to stay back to help block. That wasn't the case a few games ago but it is now.

More important than blitzing will be selling out to stop Barkley. Load it up, bring em down and use run blitzes to stop Barkley. McSorley has a bum ankle so you don't have to account for him right now. Believe it or not, you want to play a Narduzzi type defense and see if McSorley can make you pay with his arm.

Ash should also be running jump ball drills all week. There are at least two or three plays a game where our WRs outmuscle defenders on deep 50/50 balls. Indiana actually did a good job with this. BTW, this is where Blacknall is a problem. Godwin is the best though.

3 - Good luck. Reid is arguably the second best player on our team and our secondary is strong. IU picked on us with size and we immediately went with a bigger CB. We're also physical...Reid is a hands on guy and Marcus Allen will turn your lights out.

The DL needs to step up bigtime. PSU posters have mentioned they have injuries in the OL.
Gio needs to run like the game is important.
Oden should take some series and go 5 wide even if he runs every time.
Soften up their rb with some big hits, maybe some of the semi-late variety I've seen on our players in B10 play - defenders fall or leave their feet as a player is going down so they can hit them even after the ball carrier has hit the turf.
Hold up ball carriers to try to let others rip away the ball. Punch at the ball when tackling.
Vary blitzes.
OL needs to be stout and Martin needs to take the challenge of being the better rb that night.
Coaches need to be smart and have a feel for the flow of the game. Spread out the offense.

Piece of cake.

Psu fan but non Joe bot here. You guys have more of a chance than you think with the way our OL is right now. I think we win but it's closer than you think. If you guys can have some big special team plays or timely turnovers I wouldn't rule out an upset at night if your fans show up. I'm nervous to say the least.

We used to have good special teams, but Coach Okruch decided it would be in our best interest to break something that wasn't broken. He did teach us how to do a really cool arm swing for kickoffs though. So we've at least got that going for us.

Lace their pregame meal with massive quantities of Ex-Lax.

I agree Al...
Not just blitz, but sellout blitz, send more than they can block on every single passing down without fail.
Talk about creating confusion and havoc....it's the only way. If it doesn't work how bad could it be, we get beat 50 to 0....so what

RutgersAl

I think you got it mostly right but I'll twist it different

Got to stuff the run and barkley...especially if the penn state oline is as banged up as reported

Make their WRs and Qb beat us

There is no realistic scanairo that give us an upset with Barkley having a big game

The O-line is so banged up that we are going 2 or 3 deep compared to the beginning of the season to find healthy bodies at each spot. Blitzing often is your key to success. Game will not be 50-0 and likely closer than one would imagine.

We don't. You already know all those new jersey all Stars they have - can't wait to come back and embarrass their State School

Team should go out with "nothing to lose" attitude and play relaxed with lazer-like focus. Of course easier said than done but the pressure will all be on the lions.

Stack the box to stop Barkley. The QB for Penn State has done well when he's had a solid running game. Do like Indiana and take away the run game with a lot of run blitzes. Force this kid to win it by throwing which isn't his strength. Create turnovers like in the IU game and score off of it. Reduce the 3 and out series.

I have a bad feeling that PSU will try to out do Michigan. They (PSU) has a real shot at the playoffs this year if they win out. Now they need to make a statement in each remaining game, which means I envision a savage beating. However, miracles do happen so a victory is not out of the question. If we keep the game under 2 TD's to me that would be equivalent to a win

1. Rutgers Al, you have an open invite to my tailgate next year.

2. This was a great post. It made me laugh andspit coffee out my nose. But I got much easier directions from my GPS so I fixed it for you:

You do know the best way for the Nittany Lions to get Piscataway, New Jersey is:
  1. East till you smell it
  2. North till you step in it. .
Good luck.

Based on what we have seen so far I think the question is not how we beat them but how we prevent a blowout. Franklin will try to run it up for recruiting purposes if he can so, assuming we again come out flat and fall behind by 14 - 20 points in the first quarter as we have in every other game, this could get ugly in a hurry.

41. you'll see Rutgers Stadium on the left with a big Welcome Penn St sign on it and all the friendly Rutgers fans giving the Nit team a rousing Jersey cheer once they enter HPSS .

Good job.

1. Rutgers Al, you have an open invite to my tailgate next year.

2. This was a great post. It made me laugh andspit coffee out my nose. But I got much easier directions from my GPS so I fixed it for you:

Good luck.

your edit of my directions explained :D
(2)North till you step in it. .
Penn St is 40.7934° N,(The latitude for State College, PA)
Rutgers is 40.5549° N,
looks like if you step in something smelly your be North of New Brunswick , NJ
and in Happy Valley, PA.
(1) East till you smell it.
The great smell from NJ Cuisine is something to look forward to compared to Happy Valley's cow dung smell permeating the air around Beaver Stadium
Then every once in awhile the breeze from the Jersey Shore makes all of Jersey the place to be.
Whereas the only aroma your get while in Happy Valley is when the smell of Penn St fans farts starts flowing in the breeze . The best advice you can give travelers going to driving by the State College ,PA area is : wear a clothes-pin on your nose because even the best air fresher you can use won't overcome the stench in the air there.

By the way, Nit fans please wear deodorant and use mouthwash before you come, if you plan on attending the game, personal hygiene might not be a priority where you're from, but Jersey residents and those from that Great State do. (Penn St fans and Alumni living or from Jersey are the exception to that rule [winking])

do the same thing you did against MSU, tOSU, and UM.. I think that is Ash's gameplan??
Ash's game plan at the beginning of this season is the same as it is now,
get wiped out against the schools you mentioned after playing Iowa close.
That plan gives the Nits a false sense of security coming into the game enabling RU to destroy Penn St when the teams meet on Saturday.

Paint the visitors locker room pink

Hey - Iowa beat Michigan.. maybe that was the reason?

If that fails, carbon monoxide into the visitors locker room at half time
