I appreciate all Paul did for the Rutgers Basketball program and the community. He really gave his all for RU and NJ. It is not a good look for us that he is moving on to another team/university.

But, sometimes it just is time for people to move on. Paul should have been much better(as a player) overall in his time at RU. There was the 5 game stretch 2 years ago, when he looked and played like Magic Johnson. This year, he was great in the 2nd half of the Michigan State game at the Garden, and played really well in the Michigan game in the Big Ten tournament. He had his moments(he did average a good amount of assists in his career) and really tried(maybe too hard) to be a leader. Overall, subjectively, I would have to say that Paul should have been better overall.

I think that Simpson(hopefully keeps improving and blossoms) and Fernandes will perform better overall this year as guards. We will miss Paul because of 1 less person in a rotation, but I think overall it is best that Paul moved on. It probably is best for him and RU overall, in my opinion.

Best of Luck,
Groz

We don’t win at Purdue without Paul down the stretch either.

Fernandes brings a skillset that Paul didn't have. A quick guard, who can shoot and get in the lane and kick to other shooters. Those other best 3 point shooters Cam and Mulcahy are gone now. The pressure will be on GG unless Pike gets another shooting guard immediately. We have also needed a 4/5 type for months. Time to earn that contract extension.

Also pray that Fernandes doesn't get injured again...

at this hour our team looks like this.

1 - Fernandes
2 - Simpson (for al his talent, he isn't an effecient shooter sub 40% overall and sub 20% from 3 - so we have a shootiing guard that isn't a great shooter
3 - Gavin - no time for growing pains
4. - Hyatt - undersized 4 who is weak defensively and not a great rebounder
5 - Cliff

BENCH

Mag - coming off an ACL in February
Wolf - massive development year
Chol -?
Davis ?

Disaster waiting to happen with this line up.
Need to set our sights on the 2024 Class and making the Tournament that year.

Illinois just rubs salt in the wound more. I’d be fine with never seeing him at the RAC again.

I look at Fernandez as the 2 based on his ability to shoot and numbers comparable to Cams.
DS playing for Paul which he was anyway and does he take the next step? Last 7 games showed us the potential and was out playing Paul.

The concern is Gavin that guy?
How long until Mag is ready?
Do we get a rotational player to fill Paul’s spot at the 3 and is Davis going to be ready

Fernandes is not the 2. First of all he is 5’11”. Secondly, the reason we needed to bring him in is neither Paul nor Derek could bring the ball up the court under pressure. Paul had too slow to a crawl to try to move the ball up the court, and Derek under pressure would throw the ball away. Cam Spencer was actually our best player bringing the ball up, and honestly he wasn’t great either, and it hurt his ability to set up and shoot, which is his primary skill. Noah is a much better ball handler and passer than anyone on the roster, and he can break a press by himself, which is what good point guards do.

I meant his ability to shoot the ball! We brought him in because we needed another guard along side Derek because Paul was being moved to the 3. If your going by height then he’s too small to play PG as well! Lol

They will play a 2 guard slasher set and DS had problem adjusting last year first half of the season agreed, By the end of the year he got any shot he wanted at the basket and he had Chase Audige on skates who finished tied with Caleb a DOPY.

Cam was our best shooter but could not finish inside, had no lift, could not create his own shot, had to long of a release and could not guard in space but was excellent in press and zone anticipating the passing lanes.

No one is faulting a kid for moving on . It’s the timing
It’s not a Cam-like timing issue. Paul was good as gone when he declared for the draft. No surprises for Pike when Paul withdraws from the draft and decides to enter the portal. He should not have been counting on Paul, so disappointment - yes; harm - not really.

If Hyatt is starting we are in trouble

They could be sandbagging, but I’ve been told that Illinois is not pursuing him. Currently Illinois has no scholarships. If one opens up, a target is Antonio Reeves.

But I’ve been misled before. Lol

Just saw a tweet posted on the premium side that said Gonzaga, Kansas, Michigan and a few other schools have already contacted Paul. None of the early names floated line Illinois were on the list.

The Rutgers basketball team didn't get better the following seasons when Young and Harper left early. The notion the team will be better this season with the loss of Spencer, Mulcahy and McConnell is based on wishful thinking .Its also based on viewing 2023-2024 as a transition team changing the offense in preparation for elite talent in 2024-2025.

Michigan would be a tough pill to swallow.
