Spike Lee was in the House last night

He Got Game is my favorite Spike Lee movie.

If you haven't seen it yet, you should checkout Spike's "The Grestest Catch" - a 30 minute documentary made for ESPN.
Its about the helmet catch made by David Tyree in the 2008 Super Bowl.
He interviews players from bother teams, and Rodney Harrrison really fleshes out what that catch meant to him

Its one of the best sports docs I ever saw, and its not just for NYG fans or even just football fans.

Correction made to original post - “Neptune Township born”.

I would have gone all the way and changed it to Asbury! 😊

“Born” in Wikipedia can either be actual place of birth (hospital) or the first home they lived in. In this case, I assume it’s the hospital.

Spike Lee is a self-entitled a-hole.
Absolutely! Interacted with him a couple of times with some charity day stuff. We as an organization agreed he was not worth the drama to deal with any longer and decided not to invite him any longer. You have to be a special human to make demands of charity. We had so many great people donate their time and money (employees gave up their commission, clients donated additionally beyond sending additional orders)over a 15 year period of my involvement. Can think of only 3 people over that time that left such a negative impression. 1 politician 1 athlete and 1 Spike Lee.

You know him personally?
I didnt realize you had to personally know someone to have an opinion on their character. I'll refer to @kupuna133 in the post above to help solidify my thoughts. "It takes a special human to make demands of charity". That's pretty darn douchey and makes me continue to think he is an a-hole.

I was asking a question. Not telling you what you have to do in order for you to form an opinion.

For me to conclude a person is a self-entitled asshole, I'd have to either know them personally or else see evidence in the form of directly attributable quotes and/or videos of them speaking, or evidence of very public actions - stuff like that. I also usually look for a pattern of behavior over time rather than an anecdotal incident or two. Because nobody is perfect.

Another good indicator is super wealthy people (net worth > $500M) who are notably absent in terms of any real philanthropy. That kind of screams self-absorption and a sense of entitlement.

And finally, I prefer to have both sides of the story about anecdotes people report about another person before rendering judgement about it. Kapuna's entitled to his opinion but I don't know Kapuna so I'm not going to adopt his opinion as my own. I wouldn't expect him or you to adopt mine about anybody else.

I’m sure I have a serious side in here somewhere. I’ll rummage about among my multiple personalities and see what I can find. 😀

I wouldn't claim to know Spike Lee. But I have met him several times and he was always cordial with me, even when he was trying to enjoy a game and probably didn't want to be bothered. But I recognize others may have had different interactions.

Entitlement- "the belief that one is inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment"

You ever watch him courtside at a Knicks game? Running up and down the sideline, getting on the court, heckling visiting players (on the playing court!), etc? Oh, and didnt he cry like a baby and boycott Knicks games because Dolan wouldnt let him continue bypassing normal security when entering the Garden? I dont follow him much, but he hits the nail on the head on your quote and on the definition of entitlement. No anecdotes needed, plenty of video and repetitive actions to satisfy what you say you need in your response.

Both, Morehouse undergrad, then NYU film school. Like Oliver Stone, Scorsese and so many others.
Spike is an NYU employee . I find it odd he’s openly supporting another school.

Best Spike Lee movie is 25th hour . The first movie to address post 9/11 nyc . All-star cast and I think the first movie spike Lee directed that he didn’t write .

I'm not trying to tell you or anybody else how to feel about Spike Lee. I have no opinion about him other than thinking he's a good movie director and I've enjoyed some of them. I have no hate for the guy.

Let me put it this way... if I was going to hate Spike Lee for the stuff you mentioned, then I'd have to hate an awful lot of public figures to be consistent. Anybody who thinks of themselves as a VIP.

I just don't have the energy for all that hating.

None of that is a reason to hate. He’s a fan and any fan where he sits should be heckling and part of the show (tastefully of course ).

Now if you don’t like his movies and the way he addresses certain issues, well that is fair game to criticize. But you must not feel that way . You have issues with his action as a sports fan

NYU doesn't have a football team.

Fair point. But I think they’d have a bigger beef with him promoting USC’s film school than Michigan’s football team. One is a competitor, the other isn’t. And yes, I loved 25th Hour. That and Malcolm X may have been my two favorites.

Da 5 Bloods is also a good Lee film about Vietnam. I think it's only on Netflix.
I enjoyed it particularly because a lot of it was shot in Ho Chi Minh City.
That might have been the best performance of Delroy Lindo’s career. I liked that film a lot.

Some of the most ignorant fans I have ever encountered. They make Syracuse fans seem knowledgeable. Funny when I went to the big house they were somewhat pleasant.
Maybe because the ones at The Big House were the real fans, not the rotten TShirt fans that were at Rutgers.

Probably not but not surprised on the typical responses here on Spike Lee.
I think it would be interesting to be able to produce a life compendium of how each of us responds to various public figures throughout our lives. Because I suspect that, for many of us, we'd discover (hopefully) sub-conscious patterns in whom we feel compelled to speak out against versus whom we never say a word about, despite there being thousands of public figures who exhibit very similar behavior.

Not sure most people ever really give this any thought. We can generally find a logical reason to dislike almost anybody if we try hard enough. The question is, how and why are we choosing whom we're choosing (and whom we're implicitly giving a pass). And what does that tell us about ourselves?

Anyway, just saying I think it would interesting.

I'm not sure if this was already mentioned, but Spike Lee was the honorary Michigan team captain during Saturday's game. Supposedly he became a big (or bigger, if he was already a fan) Michigan fan during the spring, when he was in Ann Arbor for the Michigan football spring game, to film segments for his documentary on Colin Kaepernick. Coach Harbaugh had made Kaepernick the honorary captain for the spring game, and arranged a workout/exhibition for him while he was there. Lee had much praise and admiration for Harbaugh, and Michigan, for supporting Kaepernick.

In case anyone forgot, Harbaugh coached Kaepernick in the NFL.

Tastefully? Absolutely. Enjoy and heckle. When you believe your money and your seats give you the right to get out of your seat, move up and down the sideline and enter onto the playing court to engage players, you just stepped over the boundary. Thats the entitlement. When you yell at security guards trying to do their job and challenge Dolan on his security policy, then cry about it and boycott games, that makes you the a-hole. Hence the entitled a-hole label. I thought I explained it well enough above. Hopefully that clears things up. Oh, and fyi. I'm not a hateful person. I can dislike someone's actions but not hate at the same time.

Wonder how people fell when someone in the row in front of them constantly stands up (maybe even with a sign) and obstructs their view. Now think of someone doing it to a whole row.

+1 on 25th hour. One of the few movies I ever bothered owning. Although, since it was an SD DVD, it really just reinforced my disinclination toward owning movies.

It would piss me off. But I'd get over it.
