Getting into some numbers this morning and here's what they say our gameplan should be.

1) As a team they are shooting a whopping 39% from 3, while we are allowing our opponents to shoot 36.2% from 3 which is 264th in the nation. Here's an eye popping stat, the 3 ball has KILLED us this year. Our opponents are scoring 46.2% of their points from 3 land this year which is the 4th worst in the entire nation of 300+ division 1 teams. Key number 1? Run them off the 3 point line. As a team we are just allowing our opponents to shoot 39.4% from inside the arc, which is good for 25th in the nation (anyone who says we are missing eugene on the defensive end is kidding themselves).

2) Stephen F Austin turns the ball over a ton. They turn the ball over the 5th most of any division 1 team in the nation. It is very important that we capitalize on these in transition tonight. I see Montez Mathis getting a ton of minutes tonight because this is what he does best, capitalize on turnovers and finish in transition. I also think it's important that we have our guys in the game who force turnovers the most like montez, caleb, geo and harper. These guys should play a ton tonight.

3) On the flip side? Stephen F Austin forces more turnovers while on defense than any team in America. They are #1 of 352 for turnovers. This means we need ball handles on the court who play under control. IMO we'll see very little of shaq carter tonight, look for us to go small with harper and yeboah mainly playing the 4. I also anticipate jacob young playing his least minutes of any game tonight because he just plays too fast and out of control to deal with trapping defenses imo. Jacob Young leads all of our guards by a longshot (almost double compared with every other guard) in % of turnovers per possession played. In fact 25% of jacob youngs possessions have wound up in turnovers. It's a pretty remarkable stat.

4) Stephen F Austin fouls a ton. In fact they are the 5th most "mucked up" team in the nation ranking #5 out of 352 for % of fouls per possession. This means it's important for us to play our guys who draw fouls and knock down foul shots. Harper and Yeboah are #1 and #2 respectively on our team for drawing fouls on the opposition with caleb and jacob young not too far behind. It's important that guys who draw fouls AND can hit foul shots play alot tonight. That means look for caleb, yeboah and harper to play a ton. If we're weak at the line tonight, we're in trouble.

5) We must play a clean game. Stephen F Austin gets to the line alot. Luckily we play some of the cleanest defense in the country. However, Stephen F Austin is top 50 in the country at getting to the line and then when they're there, they are shooting a killer 78% good for 38th in the country. Playing clean D tonight will be huge.

the concerning thing about Rutgers 3 pt defense so far this year isn't opponents 3 pt percentage which is mostly random noise, it's the sheer volume of attempts they are getting up. 43.4% of opponent shots have been 3s which is the 297th worst in the country. The previous 3 seasons Rutgers opponents have been around 37-38% of attempts from 3 which is more middle of the road nationally.

Then again maybe Pikiell just doesn't care because his Stony Brook teams ranked #289 or worse in opponent 3 pt attempt percentage 9 of his 11 seasons.

Gotta run those opponents off the line and force them to take less efficient 2 pt jumpers

Regarding defending the 3, I don't know why we haven't seen more matchup zone. We played it some in the first half against Bryant but I haven't seen much of it again. Maybe Pike things we haven't picked it up enough to play it more yet. With the matchup zone, you are not chasing guys around screens and most of your players are matching up with guys that are already on the three point line. You are basically passing guys off who come and go out of your zone.

The one thing we still have to defend is the screen roll with the other teams 5 even if we're in the matchup. Still, I would think this d would be effective with our length on the perimeter and our lack of closing out three point shooters.

Pikiell's defense would be great against Rutgers - a team that can't shoot threes. Against teams that can hit them, it's baaad.

zone would allow more 3 pt attempts imo

As an SFA fan who has watched all their games, this analysis is pretty good. SFA turns the ball over a ton, but most of their turnovers are through pushing pace.
Make no mistake, Rutgers will get some easy baskets tonight. It is a byproduct of SFA's defensive style. The Jacks will trade easy buckets for pace because they know if they play their style they will force numerous turnovers.
If running SFA off the three point line is priority, Rutgers will have to defend the dribble drive effectively and SFA has some great athletes that can attack the rim and place Rutgers rim protectors in foul trouble. Kevon Harris is the leader of the team, averaging 19.8 PPG. He is an NBA prospect who will shoot the three if you give it to him (he's shooting 43.5% from 3) and will drive and attack the rim if you overplay the shot. He's a strong, athletic 6'6" swingman.
As far as interior play, this is by far the biggest test for SFA. Rutgers size will be a factor in this game, but SFA will play at times with a 6'9", 6'8"and 6'8" front court and move Harris to the "2".
I think an overlooked key in this game will be how SFA's defensive specialist, 5'10" PG John Comeaux will fare against Gio Baker. Comeaux is a pesky defender, but has not yet faced a PG with Baker's size and athleticism.
It will be a good game, for sure. And fun to watch.

matchup is not straight zone..its matching up and man to man guarding someone in your area. If we can do this effectively, this should be our defense. Again, it is tough to learn so maybe thats why we haven't used it more.

I like the way the problem with poor defense can be solved.

Not having Omoruyi and Doorson in the paint as second level defenders changes the way you can play on the perimeter. The defenders on the perimeter haven't changed too much.... still have Baker, Mathis, Harper, McConnell and Kiss. And we replaced Thiam with Young, Yeboah and Mulcahy. Unless you're making an argument that our returning players are somehow worse than last year, or that Thiam was a better defender than Young/Yeboah/Mulcahy?

This is a game where Montez Mathis and Jacob Young should FEAST on SFA....if you want to run and gun, have at it....Montez and Young can get easy baskets in transition and the 3 point line will be open for shooters.
