Coach was in NYC Friday night watching Team Charlotte vs DC Premier in an Under Armour Association game.

As you can see, quite a few coaches checked this game out featuring high level play from two point guards.

I recognize Brey sitting there (he always looks like a vampire to me, ha), but who else am I looking at? Give me some names if you can... anybody. It's like Where's Waldo. Also, who's coach reppin? Is that an "N" on his fleece? 'Cause that sure ain't no R. Looks like Nebraska. Get it off Coach! Block R only! :)

No I believe coach has an R on his shirt. He is so proud to be the coach of Rutgers. He has told me and others that so often.
Yeah you're probably right I think it was just the angle plus the fact that I'm tired but now that I'm looking at it again it definitely looks like a block R, ha

Ya know...going by on a fast horse it does look like the "N" from Nebraska. Lol

Yesterday's event was a ton to watch live and lots of coaches from all over the country....Seeing how many coaches attend these events, gives a real indication on how competitive it is to land these kids and how important it is to not just be visible and consistent, but to really know what you are looking for and what kids can and cannot do.

It's very easy to see what and why certain kids are national recruits or kids that have 20+ offers and then there are some that probably have their best basketball 3-4 years ahead of them that are better fits at certain programs. I think the key for RU is to identify that rising player before he becomes a national recruit OR to forecast forward on what the player will look like as a sophomore in college in the system they want to run, since a lot of the kids yesterday are going to be HS juniors or going to be HS seniors.

Karl Hobbs was visible for a good part of the AM session into the afternoon. It will take a few days to break down the highlights of what players I saw that have not only RU interest or offers, but what other players may not have an offer yet from a high major that definitely should.

The problem with your analysis is that Rutgers has followed your strategy the past two decades of recruiting project types who were not highly recruited and the results have not been favorable.Power conference teams need higher level talent at every position which Rutgers clearly lacks .

that's actually not true at all, RU has just had poor recruiters and wound up left with projects at a Top 350-400 level, because they've bypassed the level of the recruits that land at mid majors and chose not to develop them,.....that is because they've shot too high, trying to get national recruits or regional elite players High 4* to 5* kids that take a long time to commit....when you do that, the rest of the next tier of kids makes a earlier decision and goes elsewhere and you are left with scraps afterwards.....it's why we have Doucoure already as a 2018 verbal for the last 5 months, because we aren't throwing all the eggs into Naz Reid or some other unrealistic kid that is almost certain to go out of state....It doesn't mean you should ignore that player, but the efforts have to be smarter.

RU is not taking scraps anymore, they are just not at the Top 50- 60 national level kid that you and many other fans believe we should immediately land without a lot of things in place....there is an army of over 200 kids I watched yesterday and probably another 200 at the Nike and Adidas camps this weekend, that can immediately upgrade RU's roster and trust me, RU will get a few over the next 6 months....they may not be kids you prefer to see (they may not be local), but watching the event from yesterday, there is no distinguishing factors for kids from FLA, NC, DC, VA, WI, MI, IN, IL, CA, LA or any of the other states represented in our area....it's a media driven event that convinces schools fans that they have to land local or in state recruits, when kids have dozens of choices on where to play and start their sports careers.

Everyone has the answers pegged on why RU hasn't won before, but RU hasn't invested in itself until now for over 2 decades and hasn't hired a legitimate staff until Rice was hired and that went sideways.....if we just stay on track with this current staff for a couple of recruiting cycles, the results on the court and in recruiting will be there.....but that does not mean Top 20 classes like UNC, Arizona, Kentucky, Duke or a one-off scenario of a large class like some schools put together....

There are some thought process involved that fans are so insecure with their programs and status, that coaches are reluctant to even mention a recruit is being targeted or recruited....It may be easier to recruit that player without 50 fan sites/bloggers clogging their twitter account or cell phones and some coaches just want to coach.....but some fan bases cannot handle the 2 out of 50-75 batting average....fans whine when 48 out of the 50 targets choose another school and micro-manage the 2 that a school lands....or complain that the staff failed 48 times, when they really only need 2-3 recruits each cycle to succeed.

RU's targets are not unrealistic on a lot of levels...they aren't chasing kids that are not interested in coming to RU, but schools like RU, SHU and others don't want to get killed in the media by not appearing at events, games for a local recruit they most likely know isn't coming to their school....A lot of it is perception-based and that doesn't win games, getting the right kids to your program, wins games....some schools wan to win the media/headlines and others just churn out wins or stay consistently in the mix most seasons....

This isn't completely true either. Many mid majors have beaten us in recruitng battles in the last 10 years. The fact is they are more attractive than lower level major conference jobs when the right coach isn't at the helm.

You only get beat my mid-majors when you offer late or don't schedule visits for the players until you've missed on your primary targets....there are kids that are drawing interest from RU, SHU, Auburn like Peter Kiss that some believe is a mid-major kid...he would have been killed by fans here if he was recruited out of HS two years ago or at least a year before Kiss was a senior in HS....

I can only state that the kids with RU interest right now are beyond the obvious Top 100 names that are on everyone's radar...some of those kids are without a High Major offer and when you see these kids compared to others that are stronger, faster or just more mature physically, it's easy to miss those kids not yet there as High Major talents.

There are kids that I watched that are high major offer kids that can't play in a half-court game or don't do anything to impact winning....but if you put them in transition or an up and down setting, helter-skelter environment, they can find baskets, dunks in transition.....some of these "Bigs" are athletic, but don't have any offensive game and need a staff to truly spend time with them to develop post-up games....all they are asked to do is set screens and roll to the basket or get put backs off missed shots....There were other bigs that actually have post-up games that don't have guards to get them the ball in an AAU setting or if they get a pass in the post, cannot score or make a good pass out of the post.

After watching yesterday, it really comes down to situational basketball and can certain kids adjust or not....without going into too many specifics, a kid like Laurent is on every AAU team I saw yesterday.....hustles, athletic, can run and jump and get putbacks on hustle plays.....place that same player in a half-court setting and don't allow that person to drive to the basket and make them put the ball on the floor and pull up for a jump shot?? ....there's a problem...

I saw some high-major kids with 10+ offers based on ESPN, Rivals, 247Sports composite and saw more airballs shot by those kids trying to move too quickly or don't know how to set up themselves to score....if those players get into a college game against a slower paced, hard-nosed defensive team, they become non-factors.

Hawk, If I remember correctly Jordan was lambasted for not going after the exact type of local kids you refer to. I agree you have to set your sights realistically, yet play the game and pay perfunctory respect to the national kids from the area.

@NewJerseyHawk glad you got a taste of a shoe circuit AAU event during a live period.

Lots of run, jump and dunk players. Fewer skilled basketball players.

Lots of coaches talking to each other and checking their phones

When you say mid majors what types of schools are you talking about?
