Time for another email/social media campaign!!! I have already emailed Sarah about a couple things AND we know Pikes has already mentioned #1 so let’s do this!!!

1) move sections 108-110 back to where they use to be!! It’s ABSURD hanging that much space between the baseline and the kids!! RACMOSPHERE is a living, growing, EVOLVING thing!!!

2) love the pep band BUT do they REALLY need to take up so much space?? Thoughts?? (edit: I’m not looking to shrink the size of the band, I absolutely love their enthusiasm and what they do for the #RACmosphere, relax people lol)

3) WEAR SCARLET TO THE GAME!! Hand out SCARLET t’s to EVERY student EVERY game. ENOUGH with kids wearing every color of the rainbow to games!!

4) #RACmosphere (need I say anything more?)

Number 3 should be for every fan that walks in. But yes, all students should be issued a scarlet shirt to wear. Give them a free soda or chips in they are wearing the T-shirt.

Agreed with number 1. I would love to go back to when there were students behind the bench. I know that is long gone, but really, students should have been where the bar stools are, formerly 118.

As for the band, the band used to be in the center section. Not sure where they could be moved

I’m not a band guy but it is absolutely the single biggest part (of many) contributing to the RAC atmosphere. We have a little success and the “look at me I’m important folks” want to may changes. Leave the band alone, they’re awesome.

People don’t realize but the band is actually the one that controls the cheers on every possession .. not the students or “riot squad” .. one person in the band leads it, then the students join in and the cheerleaders, and then the rest of the crowd. Most other arenas you listen and it’s so quiet on every possession. The RAC stays alive at all times because there is a cheer every single possession and that’s all because of the band. They are more than the music they play during timeouts, they drive the RAC.

Also, in the past I would agree about the “space they take up” but this year they have close to 100 people every game so it is actually pretty tight in there (although they could move down a row or 2)

Did I say otherwise? No. I’m trying to figure out why they need to take up so much space, that’s all, as in “can the same # of people be condensed? That, in turn, allows MORE students into the section and this has ZERO to do with anyone sitting anywheee else. Yikes.

Maybe @DJ Spanky has a thought?

#1 is such an obvious problem in need of correcting. Get those cheerleaders out of there.

#2 is not a problem. I would actually allow more moments for the pep band to play and less piped in music, but that will never happen.

#3 Love the idea.

1) Yes

2) The band used to be squeezed into fewer rows. I'm guessing they spread the band out during the lean years (lean decade?), when the student section was mostly empty, and the band needed to spread out to make the section look less empty. Certainly if the students are overflowing the student section on a consistent basis, the band can be fit into a smaller space to allow more students to attend. The Pep Band is great!!

3) A lot of the people in the student section yesterday were not students, but general public who bought student section seats through Rutgers. All the students in attendance received red t-shirts at the Wisconsin game. Maybe they should do that again for the Nebraska or Purdue game. But students should certainly be encouraged to wear red, not white or black (and certainly not blue, green, purple, orange, or yellow).

4) This is so much fun.

yikes is right ... the band keep things jumping. Don’t move them, don’t shrink them, it ain’t broke so I’m not sure what you’re trying to fix?

Band should be bigger! Our pep band has led the charge win or lose forever at the rac

This is spot on!!!!
As an aside...if you go to a women's game you will understand the value of the band...and I don'mean playing instruments...I mean starting the chants
The band at the RAC is awesome.

That's a pretty solid wall of brass, and you need to leave some room for the conductor.

Yes they need to move the student section back forward...we had a platform at the front of the section for one year, and then the cheerleaders wanted their space back.

Students are encouraged to wear red; and marketing gets non-red wearers some shirts if possible.

Biggest issue with the band being on the side is that although they're leading the chants (and do a dang good job of it) the tempo gets messed up going from one side of the student section to the other.

1) we can't afford to lose the donor money by sitting the students behind the bench. I sort of like that the student section is on the defensive side in the second half. But I think the overflow of students should be seated at the other end and do away with the cocktail table seating. Bookends of student sections would be the best solution. Put excessive cheerleaders over there too. Would then allow the student section to move one row closer to the court.

As far as the pep band....see my previous post.

And as far as wearing red, I don't really care if 10-15 % of students don't wear red. As long as they yell I have no issue with what they wear. It still looks like a sea of red now...

I have more of an issue with the alumni who don't wear red. Would it be so hard to put a red sweatshirt over your blue/tan/white shirt????

There really shouldn't be any need to give out red shirts to every fan, every game. A red shirt is one of the easiest things to find -- if you can't be bothered to bring your own red shirt to support your team/school, I'm not really sure we want you there anyway if you're not going to act like a fan. No need for the school to pay for food/drinks for students just for showing up wearing red.

Uggggh....for the 3rd time...I’m not trying to “shrink” the band AND I love what they bring to the RACmosphere ...I’m just wonderibg why they take up so much room when they don’t need to...that’s all lol!!!

I didn’t say anything about moving the students behind the bench, did I? Although there used to be 2 1/2 sections of students behind the bench until the mid 90s.

a lot of good suggestions, except for moving season ticket holders off of the sidelines....this is brought up from time to time, without regard to the actual people buying those seats....you don't push them out

the large section of students behind the basket is just fine, has been working forever.....

It's always been that way, and it becomes an issue playing when you're squeezed together, especially with the bigger instruments. Plus I think you're seeing the alumni pep band now as the students are not in school. I believe the regular pep band should be there on Sunday.

We're winning and the atmosphere is fine. Nuts keeps trying to re-live his old college days.

handicapped section is a problem, ruins that entire end. that end looks like a high school gym. need loud students , in the very least loud fans on that end. need to think outside of the box. if we could strap the older handicapped folks from the ceiling over the court somehow, using a bungee system they will have a good view of the game and will open up that section.

There were 2 Indiana guys in 118 behind the basket. 1 guy wearing the striped clown pants was standing most of the game directly behind the hoop hopping up and down trying to distract us when we were on O in the 2nd half. why didn't the RAC security tell that guy to sit the F down. no opposing fans that gets their hands on those seats should be allowed to stand under the hoop.
i dont know why but those clown pants annoy me.

I am loving that RU has Top 25 type problems!

wow this is a bad take, my mother sits there every game and is 26 year season ticket holder. Every arena needs to have handicap accessible seating.

my mother is in a wheelchair now, but she has never been bungy jumping, maybe toby83 hit on something here :Sly:

in all seriousness if that end is ever reworked they would definitely need to address and update the accessible seating. Some good planning and engineering (when the time comes) can be a win-win-win of more seating, more noise, and an improved accessible situation.

Yes, especially a state school with that pesky thing called the Americans with Disabilities Act requiring accessibility. Great way to get sued if you don't have it. I think it's awesome that your mom still gets to all the games.

Not at all Pete; just pointing out VERY obvious things ( At least one of which our head coach has pointed out as well( my friend lol!

I’m a civil engineer and I’ve been considering ways to enhance the RAC. The entire lower bowl area (100 sections) are very under utilized, especially the corners and the open end. How do get more fans as close as possible to the action? How do we stay within the existing footprint? As soon as we start knocking down the outer walls the cost of improvements will skyrocket. All of the lower sections should be a bowl, up to the columns. This will get as many people as close as possible to the action. I would then bring the offices forward and put a beam between the columns on that end (assuming those columns could hold the weight) and create a mezzanine level for suits and handicap seating. Will need to have ramps or elevators to that section for access.

There is a lot to consider:
1. It’s not a basketball only facility. It’s multipurpose and utilized by wrestling, gymnastics, events, graduations.
2. Handicap area
3. Band area
4. Meeting updated codes for access, aisles, bathrooms etc.
5. Locker room access

there is plenty of room in the corners, we don’t need those giant stairs in the corners going down to the court and we don’t need the practice areas anymore. However the walking aisles are terrible and they already cram way too much in with food carts and other crap. I accidentally knocked a ladies beer out of her hands trying to get to my seat before tipoff. It’s impossible not to hit into anyone.

one thing to keep in mind is that the seating we have right now is not allowed to be built the way it is....in other words, no one could build the RAC
as configured....so if we messed with it too much those that govern might say we have to alter to current standards

Yea I assume as long as you don’t touch the existing seats you wouldn’t have to bring them to code. Adds difficulty but can be done. However maybe bringing the section 100 seats all up to code wouldn’t be a bad idea, I sat in the prime seats for the first time and felt like a sardine, it was hard to enjoy the game honestly I was so cramped. I’m only 6’ and 200#. Bigger than average but I should be able to fit in a seat.

Agree 100%. They should not only move the lower section back up to the baseline, but while their at it, make it steeper like the U. of MD student section so it can accommodate a few more rows of students.
