Student Section and #RACmosphere

Agree 100%. They should not only move the lower section back up to the baseline, but while their at it, make it steeper like the U. of MD student section so it can accommodate a few more rows of students.
With the angle of the roof it might not even add any rows.

Fair point, looks like there would be enough room to add a couple of rows, but who knows. they should at least study the possibility.

If you look closely to the right in this pic, the old student section certainly was much tighter to the baseline, which added to the intimidation factor:

I’m not a band guy but it is absolutely the single biggest part (of many) contributing to the RAC atmosphere. We have a little success and the “look at me I’m important folks” want to may changes. Leave the band alone, they’re awesome.

I think the OP was referring to the fact that the pep band spreads out over more seats than is customary at other schools. Our pep band has always been great and I go back to the 1966-7 season, RU's first ever in the post-season, with the Lloyd-Valvano run in the NIT when the NCAA tournament had just 23 teams.

Concentrating the band into fewer seats means more students in the section. That's all it means.

What’s up with Nuts hating on the pep band? [roll][roll][roll]
Do people not read? It was in his OP.

The handicap section is starting to become a disaster as the team is winning. The front row next to the glass is filled every game. RU provides more handicap seats then there are. Ushers sometimes squeeze 2 people in a space. It's ridiculous. The second row of seats are worthless because you can't see over or around the folks seating near the glass.

Uggggh....for the 3rd time...I’m not trying to “shrink” the band AND I love what they bring to the RACmosphere ...I’m just wonderibg why they take up so much room when they don’t need to...that’s all lol!!!
Nuts I haven't read past this post yet but its hard to understand what's not to understand from your first 2 attempts...SMH.

OK, my last take on this. The OP shouldn’t ask for our thoughts on his post if he will be so sensitive to a different perspective. He is implying the band (despite its importance ... IMHO), should sacrifice space for a few rows of students (that will use said space a few games a year... to date 8 of 32 sellouts since 2018). That band will bring more noise/atmosphere/festivity BY FAR then 20 rows of occasional students (the hard core students don’t sit above the band). So I disagree with the OP‘s position and think well meaning folks can screw things up by trying to fix things that are working fine. Thanks for listening to my thoughts

Those bar stools are a joke. We lost a lot of seating back there imo
Short term money grab that can now be offset by putting those corp. Sell jobs up higher and charging a good dollar for those seats.

He's not sensitive to feedback. He's frustrated by posters putting words in his mouth he never said.
And like him I was there when the students were on the sides ( I.e me!) and he's just trying to get more students down low or end court to resemble more of what almost EVERY other schools do.

Now for my question and thought...besides putting those couple of damn rows back into the student side and putting real fans back into 118 area.
Is there any rule that says home team has to be on the side it is? If not, why not move us other side, put bleachers back above 118 and put the band there?
While figuring out how to deal with disabilities need.

I didn’t say anything about moving the students behind the bench, did I? Although there used to be 2 1/2 sections of students behind the bench until the mid 90s.
Sorry Nuts. When you said move the students I assumed you meant to behind the bench where they were in the 80’s - 90’s ??

I'm not sure how keeping the band the same size, but putting them in fewer rows, reduces the noise of the band.

Let's say the pep band is 55 students (I don't know how big it really is, but for the sake of this example, let's assume it is 55). Let's assume right now the 55 students take up 8 rows, with 7 student per row (and 6 in one row). If the students sat a little closer together so there were 9 students per row (and 10 in one row), then the band would fit in 6 rows.

The band would have the same number of members, and be just as loud and rowdy. But there would be room for another 2 rows of students behind them.

Time for another email/social media campaign!!! I have already emailed Sarah about a couple things AND we know Pikes has already mentioned #1 so let’s do this!!!

1) move sections 108-110 back to where they use to be!! It’s ABSURD hanging that much space between the baseline and the kids!! RACMOSPHERE is a living, growing, EVOLVING thing!!!

2) love the pep band BUT do they REALLY need to take up so much space?? Thoughts?? (edit: I’m not looking to shrink the size of the band, I absolutely love their enthusiasm and what they do for the #RACmosphere, relax people lol)

3) WEAR SCARLET TO THE GAME!! Hand out SCARLET t’s to EVERY student EVERY game. ENOUGH with kids wearing every color of the rainbow to games!!

4) #RACmosphere (need I say anything more?)

Changed my seats a few times. Always aiming from first row in 200 level. For the back to the RAC game above, I was across f on player benches near students. Another season opposite corner above our bench. There were a lot of students in the 100s there before they renovated with cushion seats.. 200s forced to stand on many occasions. Moved to behind visitor bench, nearer student section end court and visiting fans in front. There you could stand when needed but felt some pressure from those behind you to limit standing.

Are you nuts is correct... If there is demand from students.. get them next to the court in both end-courts and give up some of the end cushion seats for students. I know that will cost some money to do so..but it will help recruit, help winning and that will lead to more revenue.

This would need to be for a Big Ten game that we were pretty sure would not sellout, but once a year I would like to see the entire Rutgers Marching Band play from the student section. We have done it once in a while and the sound coming from that many players in The RAC is LOUD ! :Rutgers:Basketball: :Hoops::CHOP:

Will not happen until/only if the front office area is converted to a suite like set up.

Take a look at the big pic of RU playing Syracuse above and note that there are rows in front of the railing in the middle section, but none in the sections flanking the middle section. If I remember this correctly from ~15 years ago, the rows in front of the railing were assigned and reserved for students who paid extra for season tickets, while the free student season tickets were just behind the railing. So it's not that big of a change but getting 4-5 more rows of the biggest fans closer to the court would help.

In a big renovation of the RAC I would...

A. Remove the roof, interior columns and putter walls and those raised offices

B. Expand the footprint on all sides.. possibly allowing more 300 level seating.

C. Install wrap-around seating in both end courts.. reserving courtside end-court sections for students/young alums

D. Demolish the current press boxes to be made into normal seating. Build a new enclosed. Pressbox in the 300s on one side only all new tech... Opposite benches. They would be flush with current seating to allow fans to sit above it.

E. New concourse facilities.. ticket office (small to account for all online ticketing).. more restrooms, more concessions and a store, multipurpose rooms... Locker rooms.

F. To make it all possible, new roof/shell supported externally. That is, columns on the outside. Escalators to top to allow 300 level seating to walk down to their seats.

This would retain the current floor and closeness of the seating.. maybe expand seating to 10k or very near it. Modernize everything. Every seat would have unobstructed view. Handicap seating not included in this plan.. would have to find accommodations and adjust as needed.

I was in the band from 1980 to 84. Here is where we sat. As you can see right down to the floor - excuse the formal attire!

It would be cheaper to do a tear down & build new, then what you propose, which is basically totally rebuilding the RAC

Most of these things can't be done as written because of the building not being up to current code and would be completely counter-intuitive
