Does anybody think that Suriano coming here will have any effect on recruiting?

I mean, it's not like we're doing bad by any stretch, and we still have to juggle scholarship money each year, but how much of a difference will this make outside of Bergen Catholic?

Its huge. It will be even bigger if he wins a title.

Agree, winning or making the final will be huge.
It is all a progression for the program. Other coaches used to say, look at the coaching staff, they do not even have an All-American on staff(then they get Frank the Tank, then Donny P).
They then said, RU cannot produce an All American-DONE
Then they say, well they cannot get a guy in the Finals--Hopefully DONE this season.

Each step, every AA will increase RU's recruiting. Just like getting some of the Bergen Catholic studs, know a Blair wrestler......more and more doors open. We really need to land a PA top ranked kid, need to open up PA.

That is a very interesting question... Suriano's transfer is unlike most everyone else that leaves a school... Usually when u leave a top team its cuz one couldnt break the lineup or got recruited over... Neither applies here... So I think more upper echelon recruits will take some sort of notice... The rest is twofold.. Can our staff take advantage of that to establish relationships with those recruits.. And more importantly... Can Suriano actually improve here as a wrestler... As great a wrestling state as NJ is.. We're never going to be a top 2-3 team with just NJ kids... Need to be able to pluck a top guy from Ohio, Cali., Minnesota... Or even Iowa!! I mean even PSU isn't all PA kids.. Hall is from Minny.. Nickal is from Texas.. Cortez is from Ill... Nevills from CA... It will be interesting to see how recruiting goes on from here...

With only approx 10 schollies to divy up per team, I still wonder how Penn St gets so many top rated HS wrestlers from out of state, when paying for even a portion as an out of state resident can be so expensive ?

Nicky still needs to get that brass ring. The one knock (quite unfair of course) is that Ash not reaching the finals is evidence that a blue chipper can't win a title here. Suriano can change all that.

Would also be nice if Richie reaches the semis and either Gravina or Scotty get that AA status showing we can develop wrestlers especially with guys like AP and Theo reaching their potential.

You guys get one great wrestler and all of a sudden you turn into Iowa fans.

1. Cael Sanderson and Company. Great experience at every level of the sport.
2. These families have already spent $10's of thousands on coaching, tournaments, gear, travel, etc. to enable their kids to be the best they can be. This is a continuation of that.
3. Some families actually plan on college spending, regardless of potential scholarships.
4. If you watched the five champions' interviews coming off the mat, it's obvious that the kids have bought into the program. They are grateful for the opportunity of wrestling. That has to weigh on recruits minds.
5. Cael's recruiting visits are different than any other coaches (a Lehigh AA recruit's Dad's words, not mine). He's actually asking questions to make sure kids aren't just going through the motions because they're good. They need to love wrestling, be grateful for the opportunity of wrestling and show no signs of burnout.
6. Results. Yes, Cael is a great recruiter, but he is also lapping the field when it comes to turning great recruits into AA's and NC's. Of the top 25 recruits in each class since 2011, PSU has turned 78% of their opportunities into AA. The next two are at 53%. For NC's, Penn State has turned 30% of opportunities into NC's. The next closest is tOSU at 13%. That means a highly ranked PSU recruit is more than twice as likely to NC than if he was on the next closest team.

Why is it unfair to think that a 170-0 high schooler should have reached a final by now? He was the #2 ranked 141 that year, behind Retherford, and 8th overall, yet results are dramatically different.

It is fair, however, when you only get two "Blue Chip" recruits (Winston and Ash) the critics can point out hey look they could not get them to the top of the podium(Ash most likely will be a 4 time AA, not too shabby). Take Cornell, when you get a ton of "Blue Chippers" and some do not live up to expectations, nobody says anything about their coaching(Villalonga and Grey were super high recruits and they have had others). When PSU misses with Guilobon and the Altons, nobody says anything about them because of all the other guys that did win or AA. Look if Suriano does not win a title and they have another "Big Time Recruit" not win, ok maybe the critics are correct. However, just think the Rutgers sample size is too small.

For better or worse, Ashnault is a guy who got hurt in his first NCAA, finished 4th in his second NCAA and basically gave up in his third after being eliminated by Heil in the semis... again. He is a guy who has had the exact same guys in front of him his entire career. Heil, McKenna and Jack. He has all the talent in the world, but he wrestles tight against top competition. That isnt the coaching...that is between his ears. It is what it is.

Fair enough, maybe it is sample size. I absolutely agree 4x AA is a great accomplishment. But, it just seems to me coming out of NJ HS at 170-0, the #2 guy in the weight class, you expect more.

It should be big in recruiting. Plus, he left PSU as a winner, that along should turn some heads. That our program must be good.

Remember posting last year that I saw the energy drained from him after the Heil loss. I wouldn't say give up as those are strong words, but he was clearly devastated by once again being 7 min from his dream and goes down again. I think he can beat any of those other guys in another setting. He took it to the Princeton kid (now 149) who to me is as good as anyone in that weight class outside Heil.

I agree, and I absolutely do not mean it as a knock on him. After the elimination....I believe Ash even said that he didn't care where he finished once he lost in the semis. He said 3rd or 6th made no difference to him. Maybe I am remembering wrong.

There is a reason it is called the "semi-slide" Wrestlers that only care about winning a title and then lose in the semi finals are devastated and sometimes cannot get that mental edge back to compete in the wrestle backs. These guys are only focused on the top of the podium.

It's called 'first or last' mentality. Hope we get to see Ash at 100% this year, or if not, hope he's eligible for medical redshirt.

But a good deal of that mentality relates to coaching, imo. When you get the right coaching, you get a James English wrestling hard in consolations and beating a Kendric Maple to help win a national championship. On the other hand, I guess it helps to be in the position of helping to win a championship.

He wasn't like that his r-soph year. Battled back to 4th

It should sure help with the Bergen Catholic pipeline.
4 Crusaders now on the roster. Some nights, all might start.

Damn that kid has some confidence in himself. Love the way he talks about Rutgers and basically saying why not stay home and keep building this program. I also like his honesty about why he originally chose Penn st. Hopefully future recruits will listen to what he has to say about staying home when you have everything you need here to succeed.
