Tebow signs with Mets!

Hitting a baseball is not the most difficult thing to do in sports.

Getting a hit might be.
I would not advise you try it in Florida instructional league without full body armour and a face shield, if you want to see your family again.

You guys are funny. If you had a buddy (or even if it was you), who was a great HS baseball player and then gave up the sport for 15 years only to go back to it and get a chance to potentially play professionally, you would be telling everyone about what a cool story it is or can be. They even made a movie about the old guy who became a pitcher with the Rays who had not pitched in years. Yet, because it's Tebow, it's a joke, he's clown, you hope he fails, etc. Just say you hate Tebow and be done with it.
someone getting a shot that he doesn't deserve, who doesn't' like that story.

I would be amazed if Tebow has success as a professional major league player. But there's no harm in sending him to instructional league. Either he'll pan out of he won't -- I can't see the guy spending years in teh minors trying to make it.

There is a story that Terry Francona told when he was manager of the Phillies. Francona comes from a baseball family -- his father, Tito Francona, was a darn good player and a Yankee-killer. Francona was the manager of the Mobile team that Jordan was going to play for. "When I met Jordan, I asked simply: do you respect baseball? He said 'absolutely' and then I knew I wouldn't have any trouble with him."

Is this sweat off of any of your balls???
So what, let the guy try. If he's a flop then you haters can have something else to make fun of him for.
I don't think I've ever seen a guy who has done NOTHING wrong so disliked. People need to realize he is what he is and this is no show (meaning his beliefs). That's the only thing I can think of that you would hate him for.

Tell that to the guy who didn't get to try because of Tebow. It's no big deal until it happens to you.

He's going to the Instructional League!! He's not taking anybody's spot. As I've mentioned before I've worked the past 4 years in at the stadium in Trenton with the Thunder. I've seen plenty of guys who have ZERO chance of making it. If he's an athlete enough that someone think's that there is something there why shouldn't he get a shot???
Also 230 I found out a long time ago it wasn't happening for me. Like 40+ years ago.

i guess it is a business. Mets must think he can generate revenue. Do most instructional league players get 100k signing bonus?

Word is he will continue with his TV gig. That's pretty weak, if you want to do the baseball thing, do the baseball thing.

JV move by the JV team.

Is that an old photo of Piazza?
lol, good one I'll admit, but I think you know what I was getting at. Don't think I ever read Mike was on the list, and he was voted into the HOF, which is more than I can say about your star players from that era. Rest my point.

So Jeter and Mariano, our two biggest stars of the era are not getting in the HOF and are linked to PEDs? Didn't think so. Every team had people using during that time period and sadly MLB was okay with it for a long, long time until Bud found the light (i.e., Congress embarrassing him). They tainted that entire 20 year period of the sport's history and that is just sad.

You named 2 for sure, no doubt they were clean. But since you mention it,no team took more advantage of that period than the Yankees.

Seriously? The whole Sosa McGwire clown show in '98 has to top anything the Yankees did as far as exemplifying the era, and using athletes who were obviously juiced out of their minds for huge amounts of publicity.

The way I see it, everyone took advantage. The Yankees didn't take any more advantage than anyone else, and less than a lot of teams. They just won more.

Yeah, the Mets management doing this screams sensationalism. Apparently Alderson wanted to pass but the Wilpons are all over it.

I can't see him making it, but let him try.

No, they don't, but it's not unprecedented for teams to pay large signing bonuses to amateur players -- it's less frequent now because of the draft but it has happened. And some of those "bonus babies," as they used to be called, bombed. Zappaa may recall that the Mets bid high for a pitching prospect in the SF area who was supposedly "ready now." He never made it.

Large signing bonuses are routinely paid to non-American players who are not subject to the draft

That's like saying Idi Amin Dada, was a evil dictator who killed a lot of people, but not as many as Hitler. Lets just say they lead MLB in the most tainted World Championships, and leave it at that.

I took your opinion to be that the Yankees won more, because they cheated more. That is the point I took exception to. The Yankees won more, period. The degree of steroid abuse was comparable on all teams, and no team had any peculiar advantage as a result of it.

Your probably right, and the sad thing is, we'll never know to what extent some teams had a decided edge over other teams. The light shines brighter on the Yankees since they won more and had more names mentioned. Since your a Yankee fan, tell me why you treat Andy better than A-Rod as both are caught cheaters? I know Andy said it was for rehab, and ARod just to play better, and Andy was home grown I guess would be my thinking. I know Andy admitted to it and AROD lied a few more times, but both helped degrade what was accomplished in that run. Add to that Andy was a snitch on Clemens, and New Yorker's don't like snitches.

It must be hard to be so bitter. Or maybe it comes natural to JV fans.

OK, this will be tough juggling two characters on 2 different threads. We got "The Horses Ass", and "mini Mike Francessa". Lets keep it short and go with mini me.

It's mini Mike Francessa, lol. Hey, I wasn't the one who came to a Mets thread as a Yankee fan to talk trash. Talk about bitter, last season must have been hell for you.
Why was last season hell? It was fun watching the Mets choke. As I've said before, Mets fans are cute when they have hope.

That's a fair point. Outsiders will never know which teams took it to a different level with team wide or management sanctioned (or even encouraged) juicing, etc. Maybe the yankees were worse...who knows. Without any evidence, I just assume abuse was rampant on all teams.

On the ARod thing, I have no insight as I don't understand it either. Unlike most NYY fans, I have no particular dislike for A Rod. I think Francessa's opinion on him may very well be right, which is basically that he wasn't liked all that much to begin with, because he was so cocky, even though he backed it up. Then he got that huge contract, making him the highest paid player in baseball. People don't like that. They like to see a guy like that get brought back down to earth.

Back to topic... I think the linked article from MLB.com provides some nice insights on Tebow:
  • His primary asset is power, rated significantly above average.
  • Not surprisingly, speed is an asset as well.
  • Contrary to speculation in this thread, scouts were impressed with his bat speed and ability to hit the fastball. However, against any pitch that did not travel in a straight line, he was futile. As a result, his "hit tool" was rated well below average.
  • Defensively he worked out in left field, where his rust was evident.
  • To quote: "His throwing mechanics need work." Where have we heard that before?
  • One scout admitted he was turned off by Tebow's decision to keep his SEC Network broadcast job. Raises a red flag as to how badly he wants it.
To summarize: he seems to have a lot of what you can't teach, and lacks a lot of what you can teach. It's still a long shot at his age. But after reading this article, I do think that this is not solely about publicity.

So him and Harvey can pose nude together...for whatever SI edition that is...or ESPN garbage.

Any jackass can hit a straight fastball...it's the stuff that don't come in straight...separates the men from the boys.

Just a fake publicity stunt...by of course the NY Mets.

Resign Cespedes at any cost and I will be impressed.

Wow, that coming from a Yankee fan in this thread is probably, no without a doubt, the fairest and most thought out answer. You sir, are a real baseball fan,who see's things from both sides of the aisle.I have restored faith in this thread getting back to real baseball talk again.

Too bad he was not in the organization before September 1, which would have made him eligible for the postseason roster.[winking]
