The "defense" of the Schiano hire

I just don't get it, people are just blowing this hire off. This is a serious issue for us. And the "defense" of this hire is oh it doesn't matter OSU gets whoever they want anyway. And so does Michigan. And PSU. I mean wasn't the reason why everyone wanted Flood out even when things were going good was because we were getting shut out of the NJ top 10? Now a move happens where one of our conference rivals has a better relationship with all of the NJ HS coaches than our staff and we poo-poo it? Listen if the idea was screw it we are never getting a NJ top 10 player anyway then we should have kept Flood and saved a couple bucks. People should be worried.
I recommend suicide.

You haven't don't the math then. OSU only has 20-25 spots per year. They recruit mainly from an Ohio base. They also get 4 stars from pretty much anywhere. They bring in about 1 (maybe 2 ) NJ kids on average every year. Meyer is not going to upset the apple kart on what already is a NC recruiting formula just to focus on bringing in NJ recruits.

And OSU subscribes to a positional recruiting strategy. I think the only way it could really hurt is if Schiano kills it on the field but then he is gone anyway-if he does great his next stop could be a big problem for RU, I just don't see his presence at OSU impacting Ash's success one way or another-- Ash will succeed or fail based on what he does, not what Schiano may or may not do

Oh my SERIOUSLY - exactly how long do you think Schiano is going to stay at OSU?
Remember - follow the money ....

Schiano has been pulling in $3 million from Tampa 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and will total that amount in 2016 between OSU & Tampa .... plus what ever ESPN has been throwing his way - rest assured he has not been working pro bono for ESPN.
- now think for a moment - what would be the max that he could get from OSU alone in 2017? $1.0 million ? ... $1.5million?

If he has a great year at OSU he will be rocketing off to a HC spot that carries premium comp.
If he is a bust / not a fit - he will be off to somewhere else in a 'gentlemanly ' way

Schiano is here to 're-validate / enhance his credentials' - as an HC candidate, his aspects that needs 'enhancement' = game-day management ... organizational management maturity. Yes, he will have to recruit - but he will not need to prove that he knows how to do it - most in the football world accept that he is competent in that area .

Ohio State recruits itself. GS being there has no bearing on us. They recruit nationally and could never take another NJ recruit from now until the end of the time and would be no worse off for it.

Schiano clearly would have taken the HC job at RU but RU was not interested. You can debate the merits of that but there isnt a reason in the world to have kept Flood.

I think it will be more like 6-7 over the next 2 seasons.

Doubtful. OSU commits from NJ the past three classes: 2015 - 1 2014 - 2 2013 - 1

The top 15 recruits in NJ over the last three years went to the following schools:
  • Penn State - 9
  • ND - 4
  • Michigan - 3
  • Temple - 3
  • Rutgers - 3
  • Miami - 3
  • UNC - 3
  • Bama - 2
  • Ohio State - 2
  • 13 tied with one top 15 NJ commit over the last three years
The top 15 recruits in Ohio over the last three years went to the following schools:
  • Ohio State - 21
  • Michigan - 8
  • ND - 6
  • Kentucky - 3

OSU even doubling their top 15 NJ players from 2 to 4 is not going to make a big difference. Their base is Ohio and OSU is just one of many schools that we are in competition with. Whether or not GS is the DC at OSU may affect 1-2 recruiting battles a year. We will have more head to head battles with Franklin and Co. than Meyer/Schiano. Franklin got 9 of the 15 in Pennsylvania to commit to him in 2015 and he has 5 of the top 15 committed to PSU for 2016 already. If Ash can change RU from getting one top 15 NJ recruit a year to 5 top 15 NJ recruits a year, that will be huge progress.

It's a good pickup for Ohio State, but I completely disagree that this is some kind of cataclysm.

Honestly, I think some people are mad that we didn't bring back Schiano and are projecting.
