THE OFFICIAL RUTGERS-ILLINOIS PREDICTION THREAD

I rarely watch any teams besides Rutgers. Looking at data alone, it looks like Illini runs a lot, and plays a lot of guards.

To limit that, Rutgers must pressure rebounder right off the board. This will slow them down a little.

EO has to play a big game on the Giorgi B. Our guard match ups will be interesting. Baker has to play better defense to match up with them. He will also have to improve that over the offseason.

I would play a lot of halfcourt offense as trying to keep with their pace will not work for us. They need to get the ball to Carter, Johnson, and EO and slow down their possessions and speed.

Illini has the edge with their speed and bench.

Beatable, but it will be a challenge.

Board prediction (just for fun)
RU gets down early and 1/3 of the board throws a clot. I suggest a dislike button as a means of protesting overt negativity, and my thread is deleted.

A league road game against a opponent playing their best basketball of the season right now.

Do we have to bash Geo in every thread.

Please, Greene. I rarely if ever do that. If this is bashing, I don't know what your definition is.

Nothing you haven't already said.

My point is, Illinois has quick guard that will pose a potential mis match to Baker.

Illinois is as young as we are, so I expect them to be potentially susceptible to a let down after playing really well lately. The tempo also may get us to score more:

RU - 71
Illinois- 64

I'd like this if we played them 2 weeks ago...I'm afraid we'll get run out of the gym...feel much better about playing at NW

Geo has a good game as the up and down flow works his style.
EO has to take it easy and not twist the knee.
Mathis should have a good one too with his driving.

Illinois consistently scores in the mid-70s.

We celebrate if we get CLOSE to 70.

Illinois will pressure us all over the place, and are riding high after winning 3 of 4. I think we get run out of the building because of turnovers and poor shooting (3-19 from three-point range).

We lost by 30 points (with 25 TOs) there last year when IL was not playing nearly as well as they are now. And, no Corey Sanders this year to deal with their pressure D. Sadly, I think this one will not be close. IL 77 - RU 60

Hope I'm wrong.

Last year they finished 14-18, this year they are 8-15. Not sure they are playing that much better except a young team had a few decent games.

Awful start, but they've started to gel. They've won 3 of their last 4, including upsets of nationally ranked MD in NYC and MSU at home. I'd say that's playing well.

Sure, but you could have said the same of us prior to the last two games. They are young, this will not be a linear progression

Letdown city....for Illini

OR

comfortable win.....for Illini

Can't imagine Spartans turning it over 15+ times in 1st half....23 for the game and only win by 5.....

Time to get McConnell some major minutes and Harper to help bring the ball up against non pressure folks like Frazier.

Still comes down to Illinois takes and makes a lot of tough shots.....if they make them, they'll win comfortably....if not, RU wins....

I will agree to disagree. We've not beaten anyone as good as MD or MSU. IIRC, we lost to both of them at home by double digits.

We beat #16 OSU. Maryland hasn't been ranked that high all season. Now Maryland looks better, but then they didn't.

Whatever. Illinois has a bad record for a reason. I hope we beat them. I dont have the compulsion many do to build our opponents up beforehand to set up an internal excuse

Just a really bad match up for us. Illinois is super athletic and likes to run. I think it's gonna be a blow out. 77-61 Illinois

Heads should roll if RU lays an egg here. Must win
yeah this is a dumb post. Illinois is good and really hot and an awful match up for us. IMO Illinois is going to finish right around 7th or 8th in the conference. They're a good team

Was perusing the Illinois boards. They think this is a walkover. As a matter of fact, they are deep into a discussion about whether they will make the tournament at 18-16 after losing the Big Ten final.

Can't wait until we beat them.

Yes, tough match up for us as we don't handle pressure particularly well, especially Geo. I could see this potentially getting out of hand but who knows.

The freshman from Chicago will be drafted after this season

IL shoots about the same percentage as we do, on a game by game basis. From 3-point range and on free throws, like us they’re capable of having a decent night or a really bad night.

In most games we consistently rebound better than they do, while they tend to force more turnovers.

They’re playing better lately and they’re at home so they have the advantage there. Against most good or decent opponents they win by getting more shots due to getting more turnovers.

For us to win we have to get as many shots as them. We can turn the ball over some but then we have to get turnovers or offensive rebounds in return to keep the number of shots even.

Assuming we do that (or close to it), I’ll say we win a squeaker by outscoring them at the foul line.
