Well, not our old friend.. but...

Coastal Carolina will join the Sun Belt Conference beginning in the 2016-17 academic year, sources told ESPN on Monday.

Coastal Carolina will join the Sun Belt in all sports but football in 2016-17. The Chanticleers will remain at the FCS level in football in 2016 before joining the Sun Belt as a football member for the 2017-18 academic year.

The addition of Coastal will give the Sun Belt 12 football members in 2017, including football-only members Idaho and New Mexico State. It also will give the league 12 members in basketball; Arkansas Little Rock and Texas-Arlington don't have football programs.

Located in Conway, South Carolina, the Chanticleers didn't begin football until 2003 and are currently an FCS program.

However, Benson had previously said adding a 12th school would allow for not only football divisions and a conference title, it also would allow the Sun Belt to create divisions in the league's Olympic sports, including men's and women's basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball and women's soccer.

So does this mean Monmouth becomes the #1 beach school in the Big South now? Thought for a while Coastal had big plans. Great location and good academics if your major is golf, bartending, or pole dancing.

don't diss Pole dancing! it has its benefits!

Would never diss pole dancing. It's a noble and necessary occupation.

I do wonder how a bigger program will do there. The population of the Grand Strand does seem to have a large percentage of transplants from NY, NJ, Pa, and Ohio. Would they care? With USCe and Clemson, I don't know what kind of support they'll have. My guess is this'll have a bigger effect on Hoops. They do have an excellent baseball program already in place.

Apparently the choice for the 12th football member of the Sun Belt was between Coastal Carolina and Eastern Kentucky. Source:

IMO, all is not lost for Eastern Kentucky moving up to the FBS, as I believe they could eventually get into the MAC (along with perhaps Illinois State or Delaware or Army). Remember, UMass is leaving the MAC after this season and going independent (reducing the MAC back down to 12 members)

My guess is that the Sun Belt will probably divide into an East-West divisional alignment looking like this:

WEST
Arkansas State
Idaho
Louisiana Lafayette
Louisiana Monroe
New Mexico State
Texas State

EAST
Appalachian State
Coastal Carolina
Georgia Southern
Georgia State
South Alabama
Troy

Well....with Navy being the 12th member of the AAC this season, plus Coastal Carolina joining the Sun Belt for the 2017 season... that makes every FBS conference (except the Big XII) being made up of at least 12 members (and having a conference championship game).

Come on Big XII.... it's time to join the 21st century and add a couple (or more) members! IMO, the Big XII should add four of the following six (UCF, USF, BYU, Colorado State, Memphis, Cincinnati).

The East division of the Sun Belt, 5 of the 6 members were in the FCS 5 years ago.

Visited Coastal Carolina last summer with my daughter. While she has crossed it off her list as her gpa and test scores can get her into a better school, it is obvious they are making a concerted and real effort to raise the level of their academics and the student that attends so I wouldn't be that flippant in dissing them. Just introduced their first phd program (I believe in marine biology). Not everyone is a Rhodes Scholar.

If this conference ever lost a football team, adding Syracuse to the East would make sense although Troy, App. State and South Alabama would thump them every year.

I went to a state college in Missouri. Do you think I'd make fun of another school? Beside if I was ever to move that'd be the #1 area I'd consider.

I'm just joking around because of the honky tonk atmosphere in Myrtle Beach. My daughter also looked at them briefly when she was considering Marine Biology as a major. She decided not to pursue it and stayed local to save $.

My buddy went to Coastal Carolina 20 years ago and now makes a nice living working in NYC. It's not always about where you go but more about working hard during college and upon graduation.

Looked at it with my Princess this summer. Beautiful campus and laid back atmosphere. Coastal is in the middle of a ten year expansion and has/will double in size. The buildings are all new. The Grand Strand is now one of the fastest growing areas in the South, with mostly Northern transplants moving in in droves. FWIW, Coastal is no where near Clemson, USC or Charleston, so it has a captured market for college sports. Academically, I'd say it is definitely a safe school.

Myrtle Beach is a 3 hour drive from Columbia and almost 5 hours from Clemson. And no major interstates once you pass east of 95. A true tourist trap. I much prefer Charleston and its beaches (isle of Palms or Folly Beach).

I passed by this college quite a few times when I was down there and really thought it was a junior college. Obviously, I did not do any fact finding on the place.

They have a cool football field too.

It was a 2 year school at one point, like most former teachers colleges. The local community college borders the campus.
