The root of our QB problem....

The defense is a separate problem and a separate discussion. Im not saying that CL is the only reason we lost the game. We were not competitive because we were inept in every facet of the game. Regarding just the offense. Laviano has 0 touchdowns in 7 of 8 games vs. defenses ranked in the top 70 and he has been turnover prone in those games as well. I dont see how much worse you can be than 0. What do you lose by giving someone else a shot?

The defense gave up 24 points in one quarter. Other than whatever is not meaningful. Any team that gives up 24 points in an opening quarter will not win.
What about giving up 10 points in the next 3 quarters?

You can play all sorts of games with stats.. that 24 point quarter was an aberration.. clearly.

The D made adjustments and got better. The O.. not as much.

Laviano's problem and hence OUR problem is . . . .
That he's not talented enough. RU needs more talent, particularly at QB. Maybe Odin eventually becomes something or Ash brings in someone else in the next year or two, But if you want to microanalyze why Laviano isn't performing better or why the others who will eventually get a shot this year aren't meaningfully better, you'll be doing that for a while. They just aren't talented enough.

He is an average QB for sure...but the O-Line is worse which means he can't even get to his average ceiling. Gio is the backup for crying out loud and he can't even throw...Lav has a cannon compared to Gio.
Who says Gio has no arm especially compared to Laviano, who really has no arm? Go watch Gio 's HS tape ? He can throw bullets , and he can run this offense and avoid the rush 10 times better than Lav. Laviano Does not give us the best chance to win because he cannot stretch the field to keep defenses honest and not have 10 guys within 7 yards of the line of scrimmage. His feet are not set, he gets antsy,,becomes very inaccurate and forget about hitting guys in stride for YAC, or God forbid throwing out of the pocket when he is flushed, he doesn't even look downfield like any reasonable Division 1 QB. The experiment must end if we have any chance to improve this year.

Didn't Gio have the deepest throws for tds in camp scrimmages? I'm all for giving another qb (s) a shot. I just finished watching the first half of Sat game and the biggest problem I saw for RU was the qb position. CL is not a threat to either run with the ball or throw deep and that is a BIG problem especially in this offense. Gio, Allen, Rettig or Oden can not do worse than zero td passes against top 70 teams. If Oden is not ready to be thrown into the fire then I let the qb with the strongest trait play. Gio seems like a OK runner and passer. Allen like a good runner and not good passer. Rettig like an excellent thrower and not good runner. Heck just let Rettig hand off and air it out until Oden and Lewis get in the fold.

Gio, the guy with not a single other offer from a D1 school, he's 10 times better. And we know that from his HS tape and just because he's not Laviano. Last year Rettig was 10 times better. Now he's 4th string. Now it's Gio. Then it will be the transfer. Soon it will be Odin, who will be better or, you know, just play him because, well, just play him.

Give CL all day and he'd still struggle.
Can the ND QB's move and make plays with their legs?
DBs can't cover their man forever. If an OLine can give a QB 6 seconds in the pocket, a receiver will get open. If you can't see that, I wish you good luck.

Laviano's problem and hence OUR problem is that in practice he makes the best decisions and the best plays because he is wearing a green jersey.... Coaching staffs continue handing him the keys because when the pass rush is not for real, mentally, he can focus and is pretty effective as a QB and game manager.

However, Laviano in a real game is a VERY different player and decision maker, because the pressure is real. Its very obvious when you watch his feet even before the pocket breaks down. He plays nervous and is not even conscious of it. When there is a real pass rush coming he mentally panics in the pocket, causing him to miss wide open receivers 10+ yards downfield consistently, pass when he should run, run when he should pass, and generally make poor decisions. In this offense you NEED not only a QB who has some mobility but you need a QB who plays calm.

Find the guy on the roster who panics the least under a real pass rush, and start that guy in the game.,....
Sounds very much like Nova.

Lol on 6 seconds without an elusive QB that finds his own space.
Hey, you're the one who said "give CL all day", now you need to qualify it with CL being mobile enough to get 6 seconds? [eyeroll]

I'd be willing to meet you at: CL would very likely overthrow an open receiver after 6 seconds in a route.

You could put CL behind the same line as JT Barett, Cardale Jones and Braxton Miller played behind and CL and that OSU offensive line would struggle, simply because CL is a bad QB.

Give CL all day and he'd still struggle.

There is no way you can know these things. The simplest answer is usually the correct answer. Two staffs selected Laviano. Two staffs gave him a long leash. This staff went to great lengths (and mostly failed) to bring in a transfer to run the spread. What more do you need to see? He is the best QB on the team. People should support him. He makes mistakes, but 80-90% of what is wrong with our offense is not on him. Its that we have NONE of the following:

Credible deep threat
Ability to block up 4 man pass rush
Ability to pick up blitz
Run threat
Ability of WRs to get separation

Its easy to say Laviano should make everyone better. But really, the OL and the receivers should also be making Laviano better. Right now, they arent giving him much help. Not much at all.

What the fans do to Laviano -- putting this teams struggles squarely on his shoulders -- is completely unfair. He certainly feels that added pressure, as evidenced by his comments at the end of last season. There is tons of blame to go around for Saturday. And it starts with the HC and OC, goes to the OL, and then continues from there.

1. My eyes (via spring game & Snapchat...etc...)
2. Mods
3. Coaches (DM stated he needed to improve his "throwing mechanics")

Dude I'm not even a Laviano defender, but your forcing me to be one. Gio is not better look at his HS tape look at Lav's it looks like they have arms thats why they have a scholarship. The QB situation is what is right now accept and hope one of two things happens.

1. Lav improves to serviceable
2. Oden red-shirts and Lewis early enrolls next year and one of those two beats him out.

Will try to to read this to Chris Ash in the form of a question for the Chris Ash show this week and see if he is receptive to the idea.

I think the issue is why not just see what the other QBs will do...how can it be worse than Laviano fumbling, throwing picks, getting sacked, throwing to receivers who aren't even in the same area code...that is what I don't get.

You don't need to get it. The coaches need to get it. Why do the fans need to see anything? You either trust that the coaches have reasoning behind what they are doing or you think they are idiots who don't know what they are doing. SImple as that.

A lot of people seems to be throwing out the "it couldnt be worse than what we are getting line." I find it really puzzling. The answer is, it could be a LOT worse. Laviano is at least serviceable, and has had some good games for us. If you put a kid in who is substantially worse than Laviano, it would be ugly.

Like I said, simplest answer. If another QB was at least serviceable, he probably would have played at PSU last year. This year, who knows... but we have seen already that the staff doesn't intend to pay 2 on a regular basis. We will see if Laviano has a bad enough game and if he gets benched in the future.

Well by not getting it I mean that I do not see the logic. I don't know if we can trust Ash or his staff yet on game day. But I do find the Laviano reliance troubling.

I don't know how it could get worse than what we saw Saturday. Teel and Nova and others have had an awful games but mostly because of picks, and less fundamentals like holding on to the ball or just throwing to nowhere.

What were Laviano's good games...we won 4 games last year and granted there was more to it than QB play but we had quite a stretch with no offensive TDs...Indiana? OK. Maybe MSU but again blew it on fundamentals at the end. Let's see what happens next two games and if we are really going to see stronger play in what should be a scrimmage for even a lower level p5 team.

Unfortuntely, Howard should not be much of a test for this team. My point is that we need to see if we have a "gamer" sitting on the bench. There are plenty of examples of practice stars and game stars.
I will begin to have a problem with Ash if we see that they are just not going to use anyone else to see if something positive can happen. And, I am not taking about putting a guy in to just hand the ball off.

i don't know if there is anyone better sitting on the bench but I saw enough out of the UW game to know that CL is not the answer. His execution was really pretty bad. Even when no pressure was there he still threw the ball like someone was about to hit him. His consistency throwing the ball is horrible. Maybe there isn't a better option right now. It really says something about the program if not.

I never thought I would ever be saying this; say what you want about Nova but in this offense he would be killing it as the QB. Strong arm, willingness to throw down field, and 4.6 forty speed. Somehow, someway, Ash needs to get a top notch QB (even a top 25 QB would help a bunch).

I re watched 1st quarter today on YouTube. Root of the QB problem during the 1st quarter was the line play which was terrible.

After seeing game on youtube, the root of the offensive problem is CL inability to: be a run threat, to throw down field, and to throw accurate with velocity in tight spaces. Rest of offensive problems revolve around guard play, lack of a true #1 wr and lack of a te threat over the middle of the field. Hicks and Martin should be starting and Goodwin moved to a slot wr position.

ST need some work. Punter should never give up the sidelines to a returner. KO team need to stay in their running lanes. After first few series DL was solid against the run game. Corners made some improvements after 1st qtr. Lbers made some plays.

That being said would not be surprised UDUB wins the PAC12. They have a number of offensive weapons, have a big time DL and secondary and dangerous return men on kickoffs and punt returns as well as an excellent head coach.

I think Ash's first game was a work in progress and he will make changes as needed as shown by taking out Muller. I would have taken out CL in the 4th qtr but I'm sure he had his reason for keeping him in. Hopefully he gives him the temp or permanent hook if the offense continues to sputter. Let's hope RU's first qtr of football will prove to be the worst qtr of football for the entire season.

GO RU
