When it comes time to think about enforcing proper behavior among sports fans, I think of that shining example from the City of Brotherly Love, the Flyer Fans.

Here is a snippet from the FlyerTalk Rules.. which are extensive...

*****
12.1 Friendly, Respectful and Welcoming

FlyerTalk is a community and is intended to be a friendly, helpful and collegial place.

Please post in a friendly, respectful, welcoming manner. 'Snarky,' unfriendly posts will not be allowed. If you don't have something constructive to contribute to a thread, please do not post.

Unhelpful posts, such as "Do a search" or those that merely comment on the worthiness of others' posts or threads are neither friendly nor welcoming and will not be allowed. If you can't be helpful or contribute substantive content to a thread, please refrain from posting.

12.2 Avoid Getting Personal

If you have a difference of opinion with another member, challenge the idea — NOT the person. Getting personal with another member is not allowed. Personal attacks, insults, baiting and flaming will not be tolerated.

FlyerTalk is a diverse, multi-cultural community. Expressions of prejudice or discrimination in any form are not permitted (such as those concerning race, nationality, religious belief, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, etc).

If another member gets personal with you, do not retaliate. Retaliation may well subject you to the same discipline. Instead, please use the 'Alert a moderator to this thread' button in the lower-left-hand-corner of each post, send a note explaining your concern to the moderator team, and leave it to them to handle. Please also see Rule 22 — When you believe someone has violated the rules.

12.3 Disruptive or repetitive posting

Posts that are inflammatory, inciting or unnecessarily provocative are not allowed.

Disrupting a forum by repetitively posting comments of the same general theme or 'piling-on' by posting merely to reinforce or bump a prior post of a disruptive nature are both examples of disruptive posting and not permitted.

Non-Contributive Posts
Posts must be contributive to the thread and/or the topic of the forum.

All content must be of a size and color such that it is comfortably readable.

Post-Padding
Post-padding or other methods of repeated posting to artificially inflate a post count, enhance visibility on the board, or for any other reason, are not allowed.

Deceptive, Dishonest, Illegal Or Fraudulent Posting
Posts that misquote or mischaracterize other posts or members, or contain deceptive, dishonest or knowingly inaccurate information are not allowed.

Supporting, encouraging or promoting illegal activity or fraud upon an individual or company is prohibited.

Use Of Obscene Or Offensive Language/Material
Posts containing obscene, profane, vulgar, abusive, hateful, threatening, harassing, or otherwise offensive language or material will not be tolerated.

Using symbols, spaces or other methods to mask vulgarities is not allowed.

If you consider a post by another member to fit into this category, please refer it to the moderator team for action and refrain from drawing further attention to it by posting a reply.

Cyber-Bullying
Posts that stalk or harass other posters in any way are strictly prohibited.

Discussion Of Moderator Actions
Moderators value your private views and feedback related to their actions and duties. You may submit appropriate feedback to moderators by private message or e-mail. Do not post comments about moderator decisions or actions, or about the work of moderators, unless a moderator has invited members to post feedback in a particular thread.

Any concerns about the actions of a moderator should be directed exclusively and privately to the Community Director.

It's really quite simple. Don't be a dick, if you wouldn't want you mom to read it don't write it, and remember its a hobby. I'll admit I don't always pass these tests but I can say that the first thing I do after a "rough" night is check my content to make sure I wasn't an ass. Sadly, sometimes it's too late. Lol

Wait.. you expect self-awareness from some of these people? Don't the posts show a lack of self-awareness?

We have seen a lot of people complaining about the board and what's allowed and what's not allowed and alleged arbitrary and hypocritical treatment by mods. A sticky on the rules will allow everyone a common reference point from which to interpret bans, and locked and deleted threads.

There will still be arguments, but there should be fewer of them.

I follow some simple rules.
1. Don't say anything on an internet message board that you would be afraid to say in public, to a person face to face. From time to time, I have not followed that rule, but for the most part, I believe that I do.

2. If someone annoys you, ignore them.

3. Don't take yourself too seriously or over-inflate your sense of self-importance here because of (1) your number of posts (2) how many years you have had season tickets (3) how much you contribute in $$ (4) how much "inside" info you have and share (4) you played football in Pop Warner, high school, college or at Rutgers. Some folks take one or more of these things as a license to ride roughshod over other posters.

4. Remember, this is entertainment. Your life does not depend on how Rutgers does on the field or the court. There is a fine line between a passionate fan and a raving lunatic. Take a deep breath and relax after a loss or after Rutgers loses another top 10 NJ recruit. Things will sort themselves out.

5. Sarcasm does not translate well on message boards. Some take sarcastic posts as baiting.

6. Be happy and smile a lot.

If everyone had to follow those simple rules then some people wouldn't have anything to post.

Btw, most CFB boards are way worst than this one. This is one of the better ones believe it or not.

Just keep this in mind folks, it's football, it is suppose to be fun. If it is not fun for you then you have to consider doing something else.

Have fun, be happy and go RU!

I typed that post from a phone so I blame auto correct.

Also blaming auto-correct should not be allowed since there is a edit feature.

Also pointing out that is is a edit feature shouldn't be allowed as well since it is not like we didn't get the point the person was trying to make.

Also pointing out that things shouldn't be pointed out shouldn't be allowed as well.

Remember, no doing this to the mods:

And NEVER-EVER burn your Kyle Flood bobble head doll.
Nor, attempt to burn down an airplane with your luggage

And one other thing. Despite getting pissed off and called out several times by several posters, I never once considered writing to the mods to complain that someone was mean to me.

I think I have contacted the mods twice. In both instances, someone from another team postse

I'm still wondering why the head survived the fire in my office, and I could not find the rest of his body. My Dwight Gooden Bobblehead was completely MIA. We are back in our old building where the fire occurred. My son came to work today, and asked me if I was going to keep the burned Kyle Flood bobblehead, to which I told him that as long as the heat is on Coach Flood, it stays.

I am not understanding these accusations of "writing to the mods to complain someone was mean" either. Does someone have secret access to John's e-mail? Has someone publicly stated that he did this? I have been called every foul name in the book here, and I have never even considered it.

I also have only contacted John twice - when I was having trouble getting the site to load. Being the internet genius I am, I had a hard time figuring out both times how I should proceed.

We had the rules posted for years, but they didn't transfer with the new board. I have to figure out how to get that link back, or else just post them to a pushpinned thread.

maybe you don't but apparently a large number of people on this board have nothing better to do than flood mods inbox with complaints

Never go to bed angry with another member, always work out your differences, even if it takes 157 posts

I cannot understand complaining to the mods about another poster, unless a personal attack is involved. As noted above, I simply ignore people who are annoying or attacking. My work is stressful enough, and I come here to unwind and have fun--I don't need more drama here.

Wait a minute.........what's that about going to bed with an angry member?

Quite simply:

Don't attack other posters. Don't insult other posters. Don't threaten bodily harm to other posters. Don't tell other posters you F'd their Momma.

AG- here is the interesting thing. Some people make assumptions and are completely wrong. The people that sometimes get warnings and or bans from John, like to think that another poster contacted John to ban or punish a poster. Never do they consider that John actually sees something and either makes a decision on his own or reaches out to someone to ask what happened.

I believe that in most cases, majority of emails or messages John gets from the "sky is blue group"...I still don't get it(what does that mean)??? lol is when someone crosses the line on a commit or there is a personal attack. and not just calling someone a dumbass.

People actually read that thread where you broke every rule in the book and went off on a string of personal attacks on a ton of posters. It was very obvious that you were going all out to try to get banned to prove some bs point. A few people even called you out on it.

Oh well, at least you got what you wanted.

I'm torn.

On one hand I can't believe any reasonable person would come to any conclusion other than you achieved what you set out to do which was rile up a segment of posters. Whether or not getting banned was part of it only you know but it became obvious that's where you were heading and frankly deserved.

On the other hand I really liked meeting you and truly enjoyed our conversation. I also enjoyed the edge you come to the board with. There's nothing wrong with trying to keep it "real" which is what I believe you were attempting to often do.

I'm going miss the golf conversations and thanks again for helping ease my fears over my daughter's move to the Big City.

Sorry to see you go White Bus. I did go back to see your Blue Sky thread from last night and you were pretty mad at some posters. I wonder if DerLeider or myself will be next. It's really funny since last year, posters were screaming to fire Flood and I think some of them are the zombies that can not say anything negative about him now. I never thought he could be fired that quickly since You just don't see it. I was one of the first that beat up posters that were too negative about a year ago. Now, I think the board went overboard.

The posters that should be banned are rival fans not our own fans.

I didn't get along with Nuts on this board most if the time, but think he should be given a chance to come back because he's a great Rutgers fan and tries to help other RU fans enjoy the games with each other.
As for White Bus, another one I argue with on this board, another great RU Fan that I didn't like hearing about being banned.
Se he's back as WBT and pushing the envelop a bit.
Hope mods give him some slack and hopefully he'll get over his anger ( disappointment ?) over the direction he feels this board has taken and posts that way.

Cool off a bit WBT, if you'll take advise from me, and stay off SN until you settle down and decide if you really want to be banned..
Then post the way you want, without being mad/disgusted and with an attitude not clouded in hate ( for lack of a better word)and a cool collected determination on the route you plan to take on this board.
I might argue with you White Bus, but respect you because you're a true RU FB fan

I'm all for it if it bumps the dopey thread "If you are having trouble signing in..." out of sight.

I'd bet bus will be back before camp ends. He got a timeout, I'd bet he was given warning but kept his foot on the gas. As for the other guy if he'd relax on twitter he'd be back already. Hard to let someone back when he continually proves he hasn't changed. That being said, I wouldn't ban anyone because there is an ignore button.

Rule #1:
NEVER, EVER, EVER post a mid game prediction of who will win a game, especially Rutgers and Mets games in which they are winning by a huge margin. You do this, and you earn a permanent banning.
Rule #2:
Flipside of rule #1. If Rutgers is losing by a wide margin, please post your displeasure with the coaches, the team, QB in multiple tirade-style posts. This appears to help the team, as shown by the Maryland game in 2014.

It is easy to complain about how the mods monitor the board, but they have a very difficult job. All it takes is a little empathy to realize what a pain in the butt it is for them. There are rules, but there are always people pushing the limits. They have to decide when to step in and when to let things run their course. I give them all the credit in the world for maintaining a relatively good balance.

You can say all you want about them being too harsh, but the fact is that a number of very knowledgeable people have left the board because of the personal insults that are too common here. The mods have to try to maintain a balance in order to keep a reasonably intelligent dialogue going. IMO this board has an unusual amount of "loose cannons".

John's efforts are most clearly seen on the "Round Table". Yesterday's ATS edition, for instance, had lots of dialogue from both sides of the spectrum. Not a single voice was raised in anger.

I commend the staff here for the work they doing, including the dirty work of refereeing all the disputes. IMO they are working very hard to provide a rewarding experience for everyone that comes here.
