Totally Outcoached and Outplayed

I was wondering why only because his reputation is that of a deadly outside shooter. And at a point some of that was really needed. Instead had to watch Davis jacking them up
Gavin (based on tonight) cannot defend. He won't get a lot of minutes if he can't defend. And he really could not work himself any open shots when he was on the floor. Our guys need to work a lot harder on both ends of the floor. We were out-worked and out-toughed tonight at both ends. Kind of shameful in my opinion.

Princeton was tenacious in rebounding and going to the basket hard. They had the 3 best players on the court in alloco, Lee and Pierce.

our guards are small and can’t shoot…one game yes, but I’m concerned,

Princeton looked like a veteran team that knew who they were and knew how to play together. We looked like a group of 10 individuals that just showed up at a playground and had never met before. I love Pike and have never really criticized him for anything but this was the worst coached 40 minute game I've seen from him. I have absolutely no explanation for the lineup combinations and decisions on minutes with the exception of it being obvious that he sat Gavin because he didn't like his defense. Considering no one else can shoot or score it might've been worth leaving Gavin in to work things out. I watch a Princeton team working for open threes over and over and wonder why we can't get any of those type of looks for Gavin.

Fernandes is a veteran guy who I thought we could rely to provide leadership, create for others and hit some outside shots. Instead he sat for long stretches in the first while Derek continued to play out of control one-on-many. Count me as very skeptical that Simpson is going to be this "break-out" player that everyone keeps talking about. Too many poor decisions, too free to jack up shots and not a good outside shooter who rarely creates for others.

On the positive side, Woolfolk looked like maybe our best player on the floor tonight.

Will this team even have a winning record? Forget about Harper. Not coming.

Rough one tonite. 1) Derek , Hyatt , Gavin and Jamichael ( especially shooting and driving into trees ) played as bad as you possibly can play a game both offensively and defensively 2) We were outhustled on the glass especially giving up offensive rebounds.3 ) we were outmuscled by their guards who abused our smaller guards ; 4) Another year of missing easy open layups which is unbelievable. 5) Cliff did not do enough offensively , defensively , rebounding or blocking shots. Expected more 6) Rebounding - It started last year and team as a whole expects Cliff to get every rebound defensively. If it wasn’t for Caleb last year being a great rebounding guard , It was Cliff or no rebound. 7) We didn’t run Pick and roll with Cliff enough when they played man to man. 8) offense was too stagnant and too impatient . If drive was picked up , the shot was forced instead of giving it up and moving. 9) Gavin cannot just stand in the corner, move without the ball , get some back door layups , some offensive put backs. He unfortunately looked like a deer in the headlights .10 ) Shooting was pathetically bad with very little kick outs ( other than corner 3,by Williams to cut it to 5 , which eventually went to 2 down 11) Princeton ‘s 5 out offense paid dividends with Peters hitting 3 in a row and then Martini hitting those 2 threes over Cliff , which repeatedly stopped Rutgers from taking a lead.

Now some people do not like playing this game but I am happy we did because Princeton is a unique team to play and has solid basketball players .They will be viewed as a good team and because they have at least 5 guys that can shoot 3’s , they will be a good team today and at the end of the year. Playing them Game 1 is going to be pretty irrelevant for Quad 1,2, or 3 loss. Now I am not saying Princeton is the same Sweet 16 team that took down # 2 Arizona , # 7 Missouri and almost beat Creighton , but they did the same things that they did to win those games. They outhustled their opponent especially being beasts on the offensive glass , hit big time 3 after big time 3 against taller , more athletic players , and their guards used clock and then outmuscled and went directly at our smaller guards with Allico and Lee getting 21 and 16 , badly outplaying our guards like they did last year. They are a hard team to defend for 30 seconds each possession without the defense wearing down trying not to give up the back door and instead being beaten off the dribble. Princeton did to us what they did to those teams that were supposedly better than us last year. Despite how bad we played , hustled , shot rebounded , and played defense, it was a 6 point game with 2-3 minutes left . So Pike has a lot to clean up , get his freshman to understand how hard you have to play and move and hustle . I cannot go on about the rest of the starters who were pathetic other than they have to look at themselves in the mirror.

I saw a tougher team in Princeton.

Undersized but yet they were getting a ton of offensive rebounds and taking it inside on our guys.

Other than Cliff. We were getting worked inside.
You might want to block out now and then. I think Pike called up Eddie Jordan for rebounding advice.

Good coaches get shooters shots.

But this guy must be good. He’s going to fix everything.
He addresses a lot of the defensive ills you saw last night.
He’s excellent at limiting offensive rebounds and reroutes opposing runs to the basket.
Besides the 3s, their runs to the basket layups killed us, I don’t remember many conventional 2’s
