Transfer Portal Thread - Portal Now Open (Chol, Simpson, Wolf, Mag, Cliff, Griffiths)

Thier just going where the money is. Because Otega and Amari Williams - don't even fit the style of play of the new Kentucky coach

These kids are looking at$$$. We just lost 2 perfect fits in Jones, 3 point specialist, and now Carr, the big guy from Wake, to Oklahoma and Kentucky. I don’t know but if they come to RU , they literally will have NBA scouts at every single game and while watching Dylan and Ace , they would have been noticed even more so than at Oklahoma or Kentucky. A damn shame as I really wanted the Carr kid as our big , stretch 5 and rebounder
Pike has his work cut out for him to get the Center and hopefully another 3 point shooter . Frustrating but still hopeful . Lathan will in my opinion become the starter by Game 6-10 but we need another experienced big for depth( Need 3 Centers now ) , rim protector and rebounder.

I don't think there is any advantage to RU because there will be NBA scouts watching Ace and Dylan. That has zero impact on a player's chances of making the NBA.

Don't care

This is dumb

So the old system of elite players/transfers mostly only going to schools who will break the rules and pay the money under the table was better?

Note - a system under which Rutgers was extremely unlikely to get elite recruits or transfer.

should have been in the Sweet 16 three years ago

yes, liked the old system better

coaches, ADs, message boards GROVELING for money everywhere you look

People are going to start blaming global warming on NIL at this rate. He probably just didn’t want to spend his final year vying for minutes against Harper, willliams, acuff, derkack, and Davis.

The old system had coaches, ADs, message boards GROVELING for money everywhere you look.

How many times was it said “we can’t attract recruits unless fans pay to expand/renovate the stadium, update the locker room, build a new facility.
Fans need to step up if we want to rehire HC Schiano or fire HC Flood/HC Ash.
Unless the fan base significantly ups how much they donate, we shouldn’t expect to compete with the elite Big Ten programs.”

Not sure if this was the reason, but quite honestly it should have been.

I actually hope that's not case and it was purely NIL.

I know I'm in the extreme minority (and likely a broken record at this point) but I would have told Jones he's starting from Day 1 along with Ace and Dylan. Start getting loose because he's going to lead the team in 3pt attempts on the year.
He's the 3rd option on offense after Dylan/Ace.

He'll be set up on the opposite side from Dylan/Ace and just wait for a ball reversal 3pt shot.
He appears to have completely different skill set than JWill, Acuff, Derkack and Davis.
They shouldn't really be filling the same role on the team.
Jones' minutes and role should be separated from the JWill/Acuff/Derkack/Davis minutes.

Similar to our projected center (whoever that may be) or Martini aren't going to be vying for minutes with JWill/Acuff/Derkack/Davis.

This is one of the most overblown things that people have been mindlessly repeating. First of all, NBA scouts are watching all college games looking for talent. Second, Ace and Dylan are pretty much known quantities at this point, scouts will spending more time on other players, especially if you don’t expect to have a top 5 draft pick. If there are suddenly a lot of scouts paying attention to Rutgers, that may actually be a bad sign that either Ace’s or Dylan’s draft stock is falling, bringing more teams into the mix. Third, if you think you have any shot of getting drafted, you are going to want to go somewhere where you are the Alpha dog, not a complementary player to Dylan and Ace. Last, these 5th year seniors, like Jones and Carr, know they have virtually no chance of being drafted, and are just looking for a payday.

Exactly!

Anybody else underwhelmed, and decreased their W/L expectations for next year?
Yup. There are currently 5 B1G teams in the top dozen portal rankings. We are currently 11th in the B1G, 50th overall, and dropping. Let’s hope Pike pulls a decent big man out of his hat.

the opposite. We have Dylan and Ace our needs are not stat driven. I think/hope/wish/expect/dream that the guys we have fit perfectly with our top pieces.

That's part of the problem.
How are you defending this team next year?
JWill, Acuff, Dylan, Ace and Ogbole in the last 5 min of the game.

I'm blitzing Dylan and Ace. Whoever is standing on the opposite side (Acuff, Jwill) - that defender has 1 foot in the lane to help.
My center is staying in and clogging the lane - Ogbole isn't pulling him anywhere.

If the ball works around to a JWill open 3. I consider that a win.
Soft closeouts and dont let them drive.
I'm begging JWill, Acuff or Derkack to shoot a 3.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of zone next year. Or a "box and 1" whem only 1 of Ace or Dylan are on the floor.

1. box and 1 isn't a thing in today's game.
2. our offense isn't going to be so good where good teams are coming off their base defense
3. I also am in minority and think it is possible Ace is our center OR Sommerville can he knock down 3? Bottom line I think the 5th guy could be a perimeter threat and that guy will not be Ogobole
4. I also think Jwill will be the guy with the ball passing to Ace and Dylan

To your point though......anybody who fancies this team being a top 20 team (5 seed or better) has to vision us as a top 30 or better offense. That almost cant happen without our effective FG% above 50%. That means we need to make perimeter shots AND the portal guys on paper don't appear to be above average perimeter shooters. I also believe

5. Ace and Dylan will not be above 33% 3 point shooters.

hopefully playing this out a bit will help land the right center/5 that fits what we need...

Ogbole is depth

I would imagine defenses will stick to Ace/Dylan and deny them the ball as best they can. They'll be getting the ball 40ft from the basket unless we put them in off ball movement to get them open (something we haven't been great at previously).

In that hypothetical scenario, what's the point of having JWill bring up the ball if he just gives the ball away far from the basket?
The benefit of JWill having the ball is putting Dylan/Ace in a good position to receive the ball. Are we going to do that?

And Rutgers is #2 in high school recruiting rankings. I would take Dylan ad Ace over any of those Big Ten transfers. Would you?

Yes, but they still are freshmen and there are only two of them. It’s not about Dylan and Ace. It’s about putting out the best team we can to capitalize on them and at least win a game in the tournament IMO.

Disagree. They will be watched intently in all 35 games whereas maybe 5 times by a scout on assignment. They will be likely be 2 of the top 5 players taken in the first round of the 2025 draft. All teams want to make sure they are making the right decision

Way I see it.....
1. Harper is a beast in transition....we want the ball in his hands there
2. JWill had the ability to get the ball in to the lane and jump stop which in theory gives better passing lanes to Dylan and Ace
3. *this one worries me the most given we failed with Cliff* Action off the ball with screens and cuts that can get Ace and Dylan the ball on the move in good spots.

Let me add.....
I have been complaining about the college game morphing in to the NBA. Your concerns are more looking at the college game as a NBA game. Maybe you are seeing things better than me.

Considering all of these games are televised and recorded from 2-3 angles, those must be some lazy scouts if there is a potential NBA player they miss because they weren't actually at the game watching someone else.

100%

One of the top college players to be drafted this year is from a Colorado team that barely made the play-in game.

Santa Clara of the highly viewed WCC has had back to back 1st round picks in 2022 and 2023.

Pepperdine (also WCC) and Furman (of who knows what conference) had a 2nd round pick last year.

Bailey and Harper need to each take at least 15 shots per game for Rutgers to score at least 70 points per game. The team needs to make at least 8 three pointers per game.Brunson for the Knicks needed to score 47 points to defeat Philadelphia because the rest of the team were missing shots.
