Not being a savvy BB guy myself, why do we seem to have so many? Poor ball handling skills? Over enthusiasm? Youth?
Seems like if we can become a better foul shooting team and lower the TO's, we become a lot better quicker.

Our current guards are not the best ball handlers. Gio is not a PG, but he is admirably stepping up to fill that role this year. Love McConnell but he is very shaky with the rock. Kiss very shaky, too. We also usually throw away a few high - lows a game. The TOs out of aggression/transition I’m OK with.

It's a combination of youth and not having a proper ballhandler. It should be noted that you actually don't want your turnover percentage to be as low as humanly possible as that means you aren't taking enough risks.

For an extreme example: Geo Baker could dribble the ball past halfcourt every possession and fire up a 40-footer on every single possession. Our turnover rate would be 0%. Our offense would be horrible.

So it's important to pass the ball around, to penetrate and dish, etc. Now, a low turnover rate is certainly going to correlate with offensive success, but it's about finding the balance. Maryland has the 21st-rated offense in the country and they turn the ball over more than we do.

All of which is to say that our problems stem from young guys making passes they wouldn't make if they had more experience. Our turnover mark is bad, but not putrid (like, say, our free throw shooting).

We're 215th in the nation with a 19.2% turnover rate. We've actually cut that down in conference, as it's 18.1% in Big Ten games. If it were 18.1% for the season, we'd rank 120th or so, which is decent.

I think our turnovers are less a function of lack of point guards and more of a function of players trying to make great passes to lead to high scoring chances or young guys (and Eugene) penetrating in to the lane and committing a charging foul.

Many of our turnovers alone I am OK with it, but when you start putting them all together you can see how it is an issue.

Now the flip side is worrisome....we need to generate more turnovers.

it is coach's fault. at the start of every game the team plays out of control trying to do too much. if they would slow down in the beginning and run a few sets, they would have a chance to focus. it is preventable. Don't believe me? What percentage of the total turnovers are made in the first five minutes?

Too many homerun balls and alley oops have led to turnovers.

We’re not getting 15 TO’s/game on alley-ops and HR balls..MAYBE 1/game on “oops”?? I’d actually bet that the majority of our turnovers are in half quart play and out of pure sloppiness which, as stated originally in this thread, is a product of both youth/inexperience and NOT having a proper point guard.

Just went through the turnovers in the Northwestern game on DVR - most weren't ballhandling issues.

1. Omoruyi to Geo entry pass on backdoor cut, too far ahead of him and went out of bounds
2. Omoruyi travel before he made move to basket
3. Baker penetrated and tried to pass to Harper in corner, but defender deflected pass and stole it
4. Mathis charge
5. Omoruyi collision/contact with defender and lost ball before going to the ground and getting bloody nose. No call
6. Mathis missed rim as shot clock expired
7. Johnson entry pass to Carter too high and sailed out of bounds
8. McConnell missed rim as shot clock expired, contact as he went out of bounds. No call
9. Mathis tried to feed Omoruyi in transition, intercepted by defender
10. Kiss tried to feed Carter in post, but bad angle on pass went out of bounds
11. Omoruyi lost dribble out of bounds under basket, possibly pushed? No call
12. Baker hard dribble went way up over his head (this one was really weird, as I don't know how this happened)
13. Mathis stripped trying to penetrate
14. Baker took too many steps on penetration after stopping dribble, travel called
15. Omoruyi moving screen
16. Harper inbounds play 5 second call

Handful more that weren't turnovers, but were lost opportunities/possessions
1. Geo stole the ball, but couldn't get full control as he chased it down court, ended up saving it back inbounds to NW
2. Kiss drove into two trees with nowhere to go, and was blocked
3. Doorson would have had offensive board, but was out of bounds
4. Baker would have had offensive board, but didn't establish himself back inbounds before touching ball

I counted 16, but the box score only says 15. Looks like the shot clock violations weren't attributed to Mathis/McConnell, and the 5 second out of bounds wasn't attributed to Harper... so I might be missing a couple in there. Also, I only count 3 on here as Baker turnovers, but the box score lists him with 4.

Edit: Duh, went through Northwestern game, not the Illinois game.

Thanks for this.
I distinctly remember a Myles Johnson turnover in the paint.
He put the ball on the floor once and had it slapped out of his hand on the way up for the shot?

Maybe I missed it - or maybe we got the ball back somehow. I was watching the game on fast forward and stopping when I saw the action change direction without a made shot or rebound.

What you say is true, but not the point I was making. Usually homerun balls and alley oops, both of which I’m in favor of, are virtually a sure thing for scoring points which is why you do them in the first place. In our case we’ve had too many of those go awry this year, especially the alley oops.

Not saying it happens in every single game, just more than you’d normally expect. I remember one game where we had 3 bad oops, and I commented in the game thread, that “we alley but we don’t oop!”

many of the turnovers are in the first 10 minutes of games and seem to be the type where players are forcing it. Baker and Gene are very guilty of this.

Didn't feel like Omoruyi's three turnovers in the early going were forcing it. One was a good decision pass to a backdoor cut by Baker, but was a bad pass. One was shuffling his feet just before making a move in the post, which was an execution issue. One was hard contact by a defender that knocked the ball loose.

I can live with two of those. Usually, he'll make that pass to Baker and that contact will be a foul. The foot shuffle is something he's done before, though, and needs to clean up.

Just yesterday I deleted the last 3 games from the DVR, or I'd go back and look at games before NW.

This x100000 ...especially causing more turnovers

Gonna to be important ...because we can get our and run now
