Two Surprises This season

According to my math that will put us probably around 8-4 going into the bowl which would be an insane year.

I would say one of those maybe. I'm leaning toward the Nebraska game at home. Nebraska hosts MSU the week before which will be a marquee game for them later in the year. Then they will have to fly to the East Coast for a game against RU. The game at PSU...I don't like this year. Last year was the year to get them...it didn't happen. It will be the first road game this year with some new starters on the OL and a very inexperienced QB on the road in front of 100,000+ for the first time...not a good scenario for an upset.

It seems like so many people on this board are predicting a win vs. TTFP - am I missing something? I want us to win just as much as the next guy, but this is going to be a HUGE task and would definitely be an upset. Also add in that whoever our QB is will be facing a crowd of this size for the first time.

I'm less worried about their big crowd and more about our CBs tackling their WRs in space. Their WRs will be their strongest unit vs our youngest unit. That ps game will be won by winning the turnover and special teams battle.

Anyway, back on topic..
1 - JPO becomes our best defender
2- beat Nebraska
(3) - take mich state down to the wire, if not beat them.

Probably because it's not as hard a place to play as people are making it out to be. Last 3 seasons they are 13-8 at home. With losses to Ohio, UCF, Maryland etc. It's not going to be easy but it's far from impossible.

I think circumstances have set the stage for a surprise victory or two this season. Michigan, Nebraska, and Wisconsin have new coaches. With Flood entering his fourth season, I'm really hoping we can sneak up on one of these programs while they are in this transition phase.

well Rutgers beat Michigan last year no sneaking up on them. Michigan fired a bad coach and hired one of the best. Nebraska is going to be coming of a loss to msu. so that makes that more difficult. Wisconsin hired its former oc so he already knows everything about Wisconsin. he kept the dc from the last staff so nothing should be different with them. that doesn't mean you cant beat any of them

I'm going with 8-4 and a bowl upgrade. I don't think the Penn State crowd is going to have any impact on our chances. RU teams with far less talent have gone into State College before and won. Whether it is Laviano or Rettig at QB, sometimes ignorance is bliss. Kind of like a back-up QB coming in off the bench and winning the game because he doesn't know better and isn't overthinking things. I think we are going to go into State College with attitude and just as good a team on paper. The longer we stay in that game, the more the pressure will shift to them.

I actually agree with you wholeheartedly. However I feel that we have pretty much two games on our schedule that are the exact same-PSU and Michigan. I think we are good enough to split those two games. If everyone wants to choose PSU, that is fine, but I don't think we will win both, some of which for the very reasons you say.

Although we seem to have a lot of fans who think beating PSU is a given, it would be a major upset if you look at where the talking heads have them and us in the pecking order.
I would love to see some upsets but not have them balanced out with some WTF games.

How many Rutgers teams have won in St College?

Did you see the spring game? Watch the spring game and tell me Rutgers has no chance in hell to win. Second and third team defenses look like worldbeaters against PSU first team offense.

Doesn't matter how many games RU won in State College, only thing that really matters is the Scarlet Knights will
win on 9/19/2015

As for St College being used as the home of PSU, this is what I think of that :flush:

I only ask because a poster in this thread said "RU teams with far less talent have gone into State College before and won." Makes it sound like it happened often

8-4 would be a good year regardless of which teams you beat to get there. Yes it would be very nice to take out PSU in State College but a W on our first trip to Ann Arbor would be sweet as well. OSU, MSU and Wisky will be very difficult. 8-4 allows for one more which may be asking too much of this group. We would really need things to jell early. QB and OL play are crucial.

Will the defense be significantly improved since last year? If not then I don't know how you get to 8-4.

I don't think anyone thinks it's a given. Those who think we will win have given some good reasons as to why(see spring game) while those who think we won't just offer up Beaver Stadium.

Since you guys are all so confident about beating PSU, you have an opportunity to make a score. Early line is PSU -11, which usually equates to about 4 to 1 on the money line. Sound like it's easy money.

I'll take the points from you. Name the bet.......

Since all the pundits, experts, analysts, and betting gurus are predicting a Penn State double digit win, it WOULD be a major upset if Rutgers can pull out a win in such hostile territory. And it would boost Flood's stature enormously.

Glad to see you are so confident in an RU win.

But since I think the line is probably fair, I'll take the bet. Heading to the shore early, so I will leave it up to you to suggest something and check back Monday.

I'll leave it up to the board, We can let them vote on it. Since you have a shore house I'll assume money isn't an issue and you don't post often so not sure banning is a concern. I'll set up a poll and then you can sign off on it. Good?
