Update: Gill and Mulcahy take down Ranney!

With scottie lewis d’ing him (one of the best defenders and all around athletes literally in the world) Paul got to the bucket, stayed composed, shook him and made him fall, overall in my honest opinion, got the better of him.

Right this second, if Paul was eligible tomorrow, hed instantly be the smartest player on our team, the best passer on our team BY A MILE, and also have the best handle BY 10000 miles. Kids a day 1 starter barring injury, id bet my life on it. The question now becomes, how the hell are we gonna keep all our guards happy next year minutes wise?

Good problem to have, but I suspect McConnell plays a lot of 3 next year.

We basically have 120 minutes to divvy up between eight guys - Baker, Mathis, Harper, Young, McConnell, Kiss, Mulcahy, and Thiam. Wow, now that I type that out, it IS going to be difficult to keep everybody happy.

Baker and Mathis get 30 minutes apiece, no doubt. That’s 60 right there.

Harper, Young and Mulcahy fight it out for the other 60 minutes.

Kiss, McConnell, and Thiam are begging for scraps.

Maybe we’ll see some “small” lineups with one big and four smalls. Thiam is 6-10, and Harper and McConnell are both 6-6, so they can probably handle the 4 for stretches.

I think we’ll see a ton of small lineups next yr with harper getting minutes at the 4

I think we'll see somebody transferring out. If not before next season then after.
With the log jam at guard for the 2019-2020, I would definitely target a top tier sit out a year transfer this offseason. I think thatd be the move

Maybe now people will believe what I have said about Paul. I have now seen him 11 times in 3 years. Today he was 4-8 from the floor and 5-6 on foul shots for 13 points. he had 7 assists and 6 rebounds and played every second of the game. He led a victory over the # 1 team in NJ and # 6 in the nation in Ranney. He was double teamed often and even triple teamed. He should have had 10 assists but 3 times a Gill player couldn't finish at the rim. I firmly believe he will be starting next year. I don't see any of our guards leaving before next season. I think they all will play and very often we will probably play 3 guards. Guys that said Paul is too slow or cannot play defense should have seen the game tonight.

Saw him a couple of times last year and thought he would be a starter from day one.

A little birdy told me that mulcahy will play a ton next year and when hes on the court he’ll be guarding the opposing 3
This is what I have been saying. He's got the size for it and it just makes way more sense than having him try to stay in front of small quick PGs

Hearing he could handle Lewis on D is absolutely massive. The way some people talked about his lateral.quickness and the way he won't be able to guard people you would think Lewis would be running by him all night long.

I've long suspected this would be the case but we'll still very likely have another 2019 scholarship to target a big man for 2019.

Regular Lineup : Don't know if Paul will start right away, but he will quickly...

PG. Paul
SG: Geo
SF: Tez
PF: Gene
C: Johnson or Shaq, probably Johnson

Bench.
Harper, Young and Shaq C are first subs in

Rest of Bench..
Kiss and McConnal

Bigs: Doucoure, whatever grad transfer or frosh big we bring in...

Small Ball lineup:
PG;;Paul or Jacob young
SG Geo
SF Tez
PF Harper
C Gene

Notes: We really need another big for depth..I could see Kiss being left out of the rotation completely next year with all of the guards we have. Think Issa will grad transfer or be out of rotation completely..Could see Caleb getting some time at 1/2/ or 3...Think we finally have a group without positions really except for 1 big, especially with our small ball lineup.

I also think you'll see plenty of times where we go with Mulcahy-Young-Geo-Tez-Carter/Johnson and play a 2-3. We're gonna be a nightmare matchup wise for teams next year. Mulcahy at a legit 6-6 creates so many problems. In fact against a typical opening opponent like FDU lets say, it wouldn't shock me to see us open up the game starting the above mentioned lineup.

I really don't see how Kiss or Issa play any time at all next year unless we get hit with the injury bug

I will gather my updates for later tonight but Mulcahy has been matched up Scottie Lewis most of the 1st half on both ends of the court. He is absolutely a PG at this level. He has played a solid half of half court defense on Lewis as well.
Totally agree !!
Very good. All I heard was how he wasnt a defender in the B1G. Well he shut people up tonight. He played great man defense on scottie lewis when they went man. Stayed in front of him and imo got the better of him. This is the same scottie lewis whos being talked about as a first round pick in 2020. Guys we got ourselves a reallllll good one
hey, I think this is the second time we have agreed on something! I went to watch his D on Lewis and came away very impressed. We got ourselves a BIG PT guard !!!

Totally agree!!! He plyed great D on Lewis. Did miss 2 foul shots toward end. No biggie but just to correct your stats. Awesome game from him tonight. Tremendous vision

He missed 2 foul shots but one didn't count as Gill had a lane violation before he shot the ball. He was officially 5-6. I typed things too fast last night when it was late. He was 4-8 from the floor and 3 of his misses were 3's. He played every second of the game and had to do so much. He looked totally exhausted in the last few minutes which would be expected after being doubled on almost every time he touched the ball.

Can't wait to see Paul is scarlet next year. We're going to have a lot of talent and depth at guard. Great news for the program as these guys are going to be pushing each other, battling at practice, and making each other better. Minutes will be earned!

Now get us a shooter
Pauls gonna drastically increase our shooting % by getting all our players real easy looks. Program changing recruit imo
That is exactly what we need plus I know he can score. I know we beat Nebraska and their point guard Watkins is a small quick pg but one thing he does is he gets his shooters open shots because of his ball handling and ability to go left or right. Geo is doing everything he can and more but imagine how much better Geo will be when Paul finds him open? Mathis as well will greatly benefit. I’m sure those three guys play a lot of minutes together next year.

One more shooter or perhaps 2 more if someone transfers and we could be very good.

I know..The Shaq i was referring to was Shaq C; meaning either Shaq would start over Miles, but most likely would come off the bench

Shaq Carter hasn't really played the 5 this year, though - really only in spot minutes and when we've gone small. He's much more of a PF than a C.

Assuming Mulcahy comes in strong and wins a starting spot, I'd expect:
PG: Mulcahy, Baker, McConnell
SG: Baker, Mathis, Young, Kiss
W: Mathis, Harper, McConnell, Kiss, Thiam
PF: Omoruyi, Carter, Harper
C: Johnson, Doucoure

Really need another center option, imo. And, again assuming Mulcahy is a legit PG as a freshman, it really feels (at least at this point, and a lot can change) that Kiss and Thiam may be the odd ones out next year, with McConnell and Young also fighting hard for minutes.

I like to see him going strong to the basket with his right in one clip and strong to the left in the other clip. Both clips had multiple breakdown defensively. It is clear watching those clips that the opponent was very concerned with Paul's ability to pass when penetrating as the perimeter help was quick to make a half hearted effort to stop penetration and get back to his.

As for next year's minutes.........
We overrate a tad who is the PG and who is a 2 vs. 3. When it comes right down to it we can place players in 2 buckets..Bigs and Non bigs. Only Harper is really a hybrid (I wish issa was)

In my mind (on average) there are 130 minutes for non bigs and 70 for bigs.
NON Bigs
Baker 32.5
Mathis 32.5

So you have 130-65=65 minutes to get allocated among
Young
Mulcahy
Kiss
Issa
McConnell
Harper (he can get big minutes)

Although sample size is big I am not ready to write off Issa yet. I also would like to think the staff isn't going 0-2 on transfers so at least 20 minutes goes to Young/Kiss.

The good news is with Eugene and Myles on the floor you can have any combination of 3 non bigs on the floor. We have seen Harper a few times over the past few games have a "PG" look on a few possessions.

here's the thing, mulcahy has such a great handle, is great at getting into the lane and forcing rotations. This will allow for open 3 point jumpers by geo, open cutting lanes for montez to do what he does best and slash. Mulcahy opens up our entire offense. And this kid isn't afraid and plays with a snarl. He's not going to be intimidated by anyone, even as a freshman.

Rutgers fans keep asking me, is Paul Mulcahy really that good? Well, he just led his team past Ranney. Paul will be the next NJ kid (in a long line) to stick a thumb in the eye of national recruiting experts. When it comes that stuff, you should trust @NJHoops and that's it.
I knew he was good but I never knew he was THAT good especially seeing him vs a projected first round draft pick in the 2020 draft. I'll tell ya, my projections for this program totally changed after last night. I hate to get ahead of myself but I'm serious, it wouldn't shock me if we're a bubble team next year with a legit shot of dancing. He won't be an ordinary freshman, this is a kid who is wise beyond his years, already is d1 size, and a pretty good defender. This is the biggest recruit RU bball has landed in since mike rosario imo

imo we're gonna have 5 ships to fill in the 2020 class between graduation and transfers

thanks for posting...fun to watch.

Mulcahy looked very comfortable out there. I talked to a couple of guys who are plugged into the NJ HS BBall scene in the early afternoon yesterday and they were talking about PM as a kid who wouldn't be able to hang with the Ranney kids. It was a bit annoying as they spoke about him as a kid who "was good for Rutgers" (with an implication that he wasn't really a stud)

well, I have to believe this shut them up...and bet your collective @sses I sent some highlights and emails their way first thing this morning!! HAHA

Btw, 33 for GSB was a bull. I know in the interview it said he had a mismatch all night, but I loved how hard he competed (again, I only saw the highlights)

the future is fkng bright for RU Basketball baby!!!

Lewis has obscene upside, he had a curl off a drive for a dunk that was showcase material. He will be a very good player at Florida. Antione also has upside that was disguised because of the pace of the game last night.

The 2 items Mulcahy will improve upon is his midrange shot off the dribble....he looks for his teammates too unselfishly at times and dribbled into an offensive foul...if he takes the mid range (which he has), he goes up another level. It's the Geo Baker aspect of creating space to get his shot off.

also played Mulcahy the way teams will guard him...not completely on him, where he fouls Mulcahy, but enough space to use his wingspan to get Mulcahy to drive into help defense.

Mulcahy has better rotation on his shot from 3, but it's tough to shoot when you are running the offense for 32 full minutes and guarded for the entire game. As he gets stronger in the weight room, he will be very good by his sophomore season. The practice facility timing for this summer is perfect for this program on the uptick.

The key was his defense on Lewis....he stepped up to the challenge and competed. And carried a team that also competed against a talented Ranney group.
