Update: Gill and Mulcahy take down Ranney!

Mulcahy Better ball handler than those 2 or 3
Better passer
Better ft shooter
He’s still may be growing into his body
These other guys verticals and I’m Possible trainers promote that
We shall see in 2 to 3 years.
Man- God Bless your analysis.

Mulcahy keeps improving. Looks great in those highlights. Hope he keeps it up.

I don't think Lewis is a one and done player. He has a lot to work on and needs to gain 30 lbs.

I’m sure I criticized Souf. How harshly, don’t know. He was not a B1G player. And Issa’s play has definitely not been deserving of minutes. Now, you’ve read Ash’s posts and you either are or are not fine with them. I’ve called no one else out for their criticism of play.

Anyone who knows my approach, they know I never overly criticize players representing Rutgers basketball, working hard , sacrificing and doing their best...so no, I don't agree with Ash. He has a history of making stupid comments like that.

Posted elsewhere but he seems accurately rated to me. I think concerns with his shooting and defense are valid (man to man D of course). But he’s going to be a perfect fit for Rutgers so I’m not overly concerned.

I was at the game last night and Mulcahy is the real deal. He could have scored 20 plus points easilyin the game if he chose, but he is the most unselfish d1 player I have seen. He is a pass first guy and a team first guy. Plenty of times against Rainey he could have finished at the rim but instead made the no look pass for an easy layup.

I was amazed at his confidence level, it was at a whole other level than the all Americans. He would literally back into the corner of the half court line inviting the double team (something we’ve all been told to never do, obviously the worst place to be since you are stuck in the corner) the two players would be literally all over him like a blanket and he would break through and make a great pass to an open guy.

When Rainey pressed, which was a very intense press, he would almost non shilantly get right through it, like he didn’t have a care in the world. The whole game he looked like he was never stressed, tired or concerned. There was something different about him and I guess maybe you’d have to be there to understand.

I have zero doubt that he is a starter day one, very confident he will be an all big 10 caliber type of player at some point. I have a believe he won’t play the one exclusively but rather the three and two a good part of the time. We will see different combinations, but Mathis, Young and Mconnell will be fighting for the third guard spot.

Regarding his shot, it isn’t a bad shot, however he doesn’t elevate on it and the release is a tiny bit low and a little bit flat. Not horrible and I believe easily adjusted. However his shot isn’t bad and at 6’6” doesn’t need as much elevation. But that said he is definitely a drive/pass first guy, shoot second. He is going to get our guys all those open looks we haven’t been seeing.

Lewis drew the assignment on him. Lewis is a projected 1st round pick in the 2020 draft. Paul isnt gonna face many guys that good in his career
And he's not going to be double teamed constantly at Rutgers. He will also have much more talent around him to finish on assists

You're a F'ing moron. This team has been hurt by transfers and lack of continuity for years, and stopping that trend will help the team. And you're not a dick for your truth telling, you're a dick and P.O.S. for being a dick and peice of shit.
The irony of this post is pretty great. This is wildly more inappropriate than anything Ashcatchem said

I dont think that Issa’s role on the team next year is the issue. He needs to grow greatly to be significant. But you can not equate that basketball reality with ashcatcher’s posts. They sicken me and, imho, he should be kicked off the board.
Really? Sickened bc he doesn't think Thiam is good and should transfer? Come onnn

At some point in time, you have to realize we are allowed to be critical of our own players. Ban me for what? Saying that thiam is gonna ride the bench if he stays here (which, barring a miracle, is exactly what will happen) and I would rather use the scholarship elsewhere? Get over yourself. I'm not the one who was going on an explitive filled tirade in this thread.

Let me say it once more for the hard of hearing. Thiam is a weakness on our roster, and my hope is he gets replaced this off-season. If you can't handle that, you probably shouldn't be on a fan message board.
Objectively this is pretty accurate. You can not like the way he says things and I think pretty much everyone thinks he can be a bit over the top or phrase it better but saying someone isn't good enough and should transfer is not out of line.

You're a weakness in the gene pool.
Again. The irony. Personal insults everywhere. He did not attack Thiam personally at all. Just said he wasn't good in not the nicest way possible.

Don't like the way Ashcatchem phrases things always but the personal attacks back are way out of line and worse than what he said about Thiam. if anything the mods should be regulating this

TOS put together a nice 8 minute highlight reel of mulcahy vs ranney and roselle catholic https://247sports.com/college/rutge...-Paul-Mulcahy-Exclusive-Game-Film--128421595/
That was a great film. I thought he moved his feet well on D. He is 6'6. I think asking him to stay with smaller quicker PGs would be a challenge but that is to be expected IMO. This kid is a total stud. I usually really care about the star rankings and still do but this kid for the college game (not projecting NBA) is at least a top 50 player. Maybe top 25.

Mulcahy looks like an elite ball handler and passer and obviously makes the players around him much better. His defense seems average, not as bad as some made it out to be. He's going to HAVE to work on that shot though. We can't have multiple guards on the floor that can't shoot.

His percentage overall isn't that bad. Did not enjoy the airballs in those clips though. But hey... he led his team to a 1-1 record against 2 of the best high school teams in the country. Maybe he was playing tight

Mulchahy had what...13 and 8, which is very good for a.PG. It's not like he dropped 25 on Lewis and dominated him or.scored at will. He had 4 FGs. Scott Lewis had 18.

The best thing is his team won and he made the clutch FTs to seal the victory and he found his teammates for points. Being directly involved in half the team points is great to see.

Individual matchups are great, but, I am talking about better team defense in college. In high school, if a 6'5 guard beats his man off the dribble he is probably going to the rim against guys the same size....in college, when you go to the rim it's against guys 6'9 or taller with long wingspans, maybe a 7 footer........totally different than HS.
The guy who guards him will not be that tall. Maybe a defender that rotated over will be. But he’s very good at taking his man off the dribble and then finding an open teammate once help arrives so that won’t be a problem.

There’s a reason GSB’s big man dropped 20 on Ranney. The attention was all on Mulcahy and he shared the ball.

He had one air ball. His other 2 misses on threes were in and out. The game vs CBA at Brookdale he was 2-3 on threes and his miss was a three quarter heave at the end of a quarter. The other game I saw this year he was also 2-3 on threes. I am not saying he is great on threes but he is decent. He was tired the way he was guarded for an entire game and all 3 misses were near the end of the game. His role will be mainly as a distributor. He only took 8 field goal attempts in the entire game.

Agree with this. GSB’s big man is big but looks like a D3 player. The fact that he had 20 against an excellent team is a tribute to Mulcahy making his teammates better.

he can shoot. He had 2 pretty looking 3 balls that just went off the back rim. Ball had good rotation and he shot it with solid form. He had one airball 3 which is a shot he probably should've have taken. He's fine

Looking at the 8 minute clip...lot to like and a lot to be concerned about. He has to improve his shot.

The value right now with Mulcahy is what he can do with the ball in his hands and looking for others. The problem is how much can he help when the ball is not in his hands. He has to be a reliable catch and shoot player.

In some of the clips you can see him struggling with lateral movement.

He has great vision and is very comfortable with the basketball in his hands. My big question when looking at THIS roster is how he fits in our half court offense. I'd like to see Baker's shooting with a dribble vs. catch and shoot. Mathis is sort of a fit if he moves well without the ball cutting to the rim.

There will be a big adjustment once we get in to B1G play.

I definitely am not counting him out as a guy who gets the keys Day 1, but at the same time I don't have full confidence his game right now translates to success with this roster in B1G.

He kind of reminds me of a much taller Anthony Collins of USF and the school he transferred to.

I disagree. You have been asking for this type of player for years. A guy that will penetrate and kick. He reminds me of Jason Kidd. His shot will come. Harper I think will benefit greatly from him. Catch and shoot. I agree Baker, today, is better off the dribble. He is just going to have to improve in the off season. Tez and Paul on the break excites me. I give him the keys day one. I think he is that good.

Not just penetrate and kick to shooters, but I think he'll be able to draw interior defenders and shot blockers then find the big that's been let open or a cutter from the wing. Penetrating and kicking doesn't always have to be to the arc.

I just think to win in this league guards need to have a lot of tools in the tool box. Does Paul have enough of those working tools to make us a better basketball team?

Vision and Ball handling are huge important tools. He has them.

1. Can he defend a B1G perimeter player (probably a 3)?
2. Can he knock down open shots?
3. Can he get in to the paint vs. B1G guards without a screen?
4. How can he help this team when the ball is not in his hands?

There is one basketball and a 30 second shot clock. From what I believe right now he has to have the ball in his hands and probably needs a screen. B1G coaches will not allow you to use a screen without the screeners defender being a part of the play.

I expect Paul to get more tools and improve his game over 4 years. Expectations that he will make our offense better in Year 1 is something I have a tough time assuming.

What you described in 1-4 is your all big ten team. After that nobody else checks all those boxes.

Point well taken...maybe a few more than the All B1G list. However a lot of the guys who can do 2 thru 4 have trouble with 1. Corey was 1 and 3.

He's very good at this. Gonna lead to some much needed easy buckets on offense.

The problem with evaluating this HS tape is there's only one other guard (Anglin) who can handle the ball and the highlight tape doesn't account for the full 32 minutes.

He was off the ball probably 30% of the time but him or Anglin touched the ball almost every possession. On the possessions where Anglin was guarded by Scottie Lewis or Alex Klatsky, he moves well without the ball, without having to have it to be effective.

I would probably play him more at the 3 spot and let him catch, shot fake, dribble drive towards the paint and find an open player or create havoc in the paint to make plays to the PF or C.

The notion that he's a top of the key point guard that's going to be able to break his man down and lift shots over a smaller defender or outquick his defender, isn't how I see him being used. It's a fluid game he plays where the HS game, without a shot clock and limited size for him to pass to, makes him difficult to defend.

I can see lobs over the defense being available as RU gets better athletes around him and as our bigs improve, their production should be better. The tapes or cut ups are just that.....but they don't identify how he should play at RU.

I can feel better with that type of thinking, BUT.......he needs to knock down open 3s and defend to be a net positive as a "3".

A lineup of Baker Mathis Mulcahy Harper and Johnson is intriguing.

I agree that lineup is very intriguing. You can replace Harper with EO as well. I think Eugene knocks down wide open threes.
