Update: Gill and Mulcahy take down Ranney!

btw, really curious to get @Russ Wood 's take on all of this. I know we're all waiting to see if Paul's ranking will go up based on his improved D...and how he's handling some of these other superstars who are going at him...

Russ has given his take on Mulcahy numerous times. He sides with the conventional wisdom. We should just appreciate his honesty and hope he gets proved wrong instead of campaigning for him to change his mind.

The thing about Mulcahy is that the people who have watched him the most like him the best. That includes guys like Josh Newman who is quoted earlier in the thread by Carino in indicating that he thinks Paul is going stick his thumb in the eye of National talent evaluators when they see what he can do at the next level. Carino too has said the same many times. These guys have seen a ton of NJ HS high major talent and they believe Paul is a special player. Personally I’ve only seen Paul play once - last year against Roselle Catholic - and he was the most impactful player in that game. I was surprised at how much he stood out playing against guys like Naz Reid and Khalil Whitney. Paul is a problem for opposing teams.

82 - fair enough. 2 things:

1) I like as many different takes...doesnt mean I will take one over the other...but i do appreciate his insights
2) Russ has said he is going to re-evaluate Mulcahy based on updated film. His takes so far have been on what PM has done through his Jr. year

no matter what he says, I am still all in on Mulcahy.

No problem.

I honestly couldn’t care less at this point where Paul is ranked. I’m just glad he’s coming to RU and look forward to seeing what he can do with his uncanny talents.

With the season Mulcahy is having this year -- especially the improved defense and the ability to carry the team on his back -- I just cannot imagine he won't be bumped up to a 4-star.

I knew he was good but I never knew he was THAT good especially seeing him vs a projected first round draft pick in the 2020 draft. I'll tell ya, my projections for this program totally changed after last night. I hate to get ahead of myself but I'm serious, it wouldn't shock me if we're a bubble team next year with a legit shot of dancing. He won't be an ordinary freshman, this is a kid who is wise beyond his years, already is d1 size, and a pretty good defender. This is the biggest recruit RU bball has landed in since mike rosario imo

I actually have thought for some time now that next season will be our best chance of getting to the NCAA tournament during the period of 2018-2021 (three seasons, 2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21), primarily because Omoruyi and Shaq Carter will be seniors next season, and we add two major "pieces" in Mulcahy and Young.

I didn't think we would be nearly ready this year because the freshmen were too green.

But next year we will have a full roster and only lose Doorson. Baker and Omoruyi will "lead" the team, the current Freshmen Four will be sophs, Young will be eligible, and Mulcahy will give us a true PG. It needs to happen next year, because...

....the following year, we will lose Omoruyi and Carter, so our front court scoring and leadership will take a major hit.

Here's the thing, lets be honest. White kids for the most part don't get the benefit of doubt in basketball just like in football every analyst calls every single black qb "dual threat" even if they're a straight up pro-style qb. It's like white WR and DB's too. You always hear, "he's sneaky good" or "he's a savvy route runner". Where as the black player is often times described by analysts in different terms. I think it's an unconscious bias.

Over the next number of years you're gonna constantly hear people say "he's the type of kid youd expect to see at notre dame or villanova." Not because the two programs are on the same level but because you usually see good white kids at those schools

However after last night, I will point my finger in your face and laugh at you hysterically if you talk down on mulcahy. Kid was GREAT against what's supposed to be a 1st round nba draft pick.

I hope we can chew gum and walk at the same time ;)

meaning, I am THRILLED Mulcahy is coming here...my posting history on this is very clear. BUT, an improved ranking also helps with the optics and with how our program is perceived. thats the only reason I care.

I have made it clear my thoughts on Paul. If Paul is what some are advertising we are going to need to get a "3" or "3.5" in the class of 2020 that compliments what Paul does.

... and he was great with constant double-teaming. He won't have to deal with that next season.
at one point he was doubled by scotti and antoine and broke the double. These are two kids who are top 20 national recruits! The kid was great. I think you mightve been sitting maybe 5 rows behind me. Were you in a red Rutgers collared shirt? If so I was the one 5 rows down in the black Rutgers jacket telling scottie lewis he was a hack haha

Same page. Next year is the year.

Greene ...

We have six really good pieces at the one through four for next year ...

Geo baker
Paul Mulchay
Jacob young
Montez Mathis
Ron Harper
Eugene onamuyi

27 minutes of each ...no one playing to many mijutes for a change...

Three guys showing capable of scoring double digits on the court right now (Baker, Eugene and Mathis)...a transfer who shows the potential to do so (young), a frosh that isn’t far off from that (Harper)...and Mulchay

Throw in a two headed center monster in carter and Johnson will get 10
Plus a game in their combined 40
Minutes at the 5 spot

We are becoming quickly a roster that is balanced and capable of scoring, finally, 70 plus a game

If you want to twist analysis that way and assume a 2-3 headed monster gets 40 minutes at the 5 (not sure I am ready to conclude that).

28*3=84 (0,5,23) and you have 76 to allocate to.....
Kiss
Mulcahy
Harper
Young
McConnell
Issa

I think it is WAY premature to have confidence in any of these 6 on either end of the PT spectrum.

I agree that 1 or 2 of the above 6 will be out of the rotation.

You're forgetting a redshirted Doucoure who is really just taking a year off to improve, and was a former 4* recruit

I am glad that so many doubters about Paul's ability finally are becoming believers. I have been speaking highly of him since he was a soph and have now seen him play 11 times. He has impressed me every time I have seen him play. Last year he played against Roselle Catholic at the RAC and his team had 4 other very small players as their center got hurt early in the season. Paul went right at Nzei Reid, Whitney, Frick and all of the huge players on RC. They could not stop him with their 5 or 6 D-1 players. He was amazing that night as well as last night but he had to do almost all of the scoring against Roselle Catholic. I am SO looking forward to him playing at RU.

My take on what?

I was under the impression that you were waiting to review some more recent film on Mulcahy to see if his D had improved (as it relates to your assessment/ranking of him). And so I was wondering if you had a chance to watch any of the film on the games this weekend.

thats the 'take' I was asking about.

I get you have lots of kids you look at...so all good. I just know that your take/ranking of Mulcahy has been discussed her before, so that's what I was asking about.

I think Russ is messing with you guys. New rankings are out. PM is at 136.

where was he before?

OIC. I watched a ton of video over the past two weeks of 2019 and 2020 guys because the 2019 Rankings were going to be updated today at noon. I think the 2020 is tomorrow at noon, but don't quote me on that. I didn't see any of his games this weekend because I was at the Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament (M.A.I.T.) Thursday - Saturday (I even had to sit through an awful girls game which started off 20-2 and eventually reached the 35 point threshold for a running clock...thank God).

No, was not messing with anyone, and yes, Mulcahy's ranking remained unchanged. I bounce from board-to-board and sometimes if the question isn't specific I'm not in the mood to scroll through several posts to find out what is going on lol.

Also I had a delivery of 200 gallons of propane for my underground tank (it fuels the generator that keeps the electricity on in my house due to a power failure like a hurricane).

Ismael Massoud fell 20 spots in the new rankings. Wonder what's up with that. He's played well AFAIK.

Don’t we still have another scholarship for next year? I have to think (and hope) that pike is looking for a frontcourt player.

Not yet..Shaq leaves and is replaced by mulcahy.

Jacob young will be rdy to play.

Oh I'm sorry..evaluating a performance fairly equals being a dick now. How about you don't tell me what I can and can't say and chill out. It's a fact that this kid has started taking less shots this year. If he is a 3 point specialist and he won't shoot then what value does he have to the team? (Here's a big hint...none).

You chase out good kids who are not worth anything to the roster as much as possible. That's how college basketball works. I understand that we haven't had a decent team in quite a long time and haven't had to deal with that, but if we are the nice guys, we are doomed to fail.

Again, if he's scared to shoot, there is no way he should be on our team. So he wants to stay? Start taking your open shots and stop ruining offensive series for us. Maximum effort is worth nothing when you fail to capilatize pretty much every time you are put in a position to get points. In this particular case, I'd rather have the kid putting in minimal effort but who knows when he is open and has to take a shot.

I just don’t know how you objectively evaluate a kid who BK has said has not been healthy and still isn’t healthy.

Thiam proved he had value last year as a spot up shooter and defender. Given the precipitous drop in his production this year from last, it’s fair to assume that his performance this year has been severely hampered by his poor health.

We still have one ship to give for 2019, as we only have 12 on the roster now (including Young), and Doorson graduates. Mulcahy gets Shaq’s ship, leaving one open.

Of course, this assumes Downes is only getting a ship for the current year, and his ship opens back up for 2019-20.

He missed 2 foul shots but one didn't count as Gill had a lane violation before he shot the ball. He was officially 5-6. I typed things too fast last night when it was late. He was 4-8 from the floor and 3 of his misses were 3's. He played every second of the game and had to do so much. He looked totally exhausted in the last few minutes which would be expected after being doubled on almost every time he touched the ball.
Agreed. He was better as advertised playing D which is very exciting

Not trying to pile on but he had little to no value in conf play last season

He's a net negative on the court. Simply not a big ten caliber player. It's nothing personal but he shouldn't be here if we want to win.

You're a F'ing moron. This team has been hurt by transfers and lack of continuity for years, and stopping that trend will help the team. And you're not a dick for your truth telling, you're a dick and P.O.S. for being a dick and peice of shit.
