Va Tech fines its unpaid student-athletes

Not for nothing, but if you are going to start paying people, fining isn't really out of bounds in my opinion.

First - the headline said they were fining the UN-paid players as well - - -

but as far as the link to the cost-of-attendance payments ...

Doesn't it sort of link to the outlook that you have on the whole "cost-of-attendance" concept & what you consider to be the purpose of the "cost-of-attendance" $$$?

A- do you accept the idea that the modest amount of money is to go toward the "cost of attendance" - that it is intended to cover the various essential items that are outside of what is covered by a traditional scholarship but these items are not discretionary or frivolous. ...
- or
B - do you feel that this is "mad money" that the players are receiving - money that is way beyond their essential needs & they may be utilizing for whimsical / gratuitous purposes

I would like to know where the money went over the years. University coffers? Coaches' pockets? Recruiting slush fund?

That's a joke. They are not getting "paid" to play. It's a cost of attendance payment, part of the scholarship to the athlete. I get a kick out of these coaches who are making huge money off the on field production of 18-22 year olds and they are going to treat them as if they are professionals? Pretty funny and ridiculous.

not at all clear they they have and/or will actually fine.....

but, the more I think about this, it would be a horrible idea to fine athlete like this.

now, if these kids ever unionize and the "cost of attendance" payments turns into tens of thousand$, we can revisit. But, based on the current amounts - what a stupid idea.
