VERY Positive Pat Hobbs Article

This should go well:

"Rutgers athletic director Pat Hobbs (right), who signed a new contract through 2028, deserves credit for the recent success in Piscataway."

"Hobbs deserves his fair share."

An important lesson in life in something Hobbs said to his daughter when criticism was sharp:

And I said, ‘You’re paying a lot more attention to what’s out there than I am.’

The lesson is- stay the course and stick to your plan.

And a good article by Politi.

Shoutout to @ouchmyknee , who was ahead of the curve on this!

Looks like he has a good eye for coaches and his original avoidance of GS was an exception. Heck.. some fans on this board would have advised him to avoid Schiano.. must have heard that from various sources before waking up.

Can't wait to get the lacrosse stadium done! He's the best AD we've ever had, by far. He's all in.

People need to stop with the GS stuff. The GB is heavily involved in a football search. Especially from a comp perspective. Pat was working within guidelines. When GS exceeded those parameters he walked. Public pressure widened the comp structure so both parties came back to the table.

There is no rift between those two. It was nothing more than comp challenges that Pat was forced to work under.

I am sure this all true. At the same time, the optics around how things were handled were poor, which often matters as much as reality. It took Hobbs forever to reach out to Greg, while we wasted time on a bunch of re-treads no one wanted. This made it seem like Hobbs wanted anyone but Greg, and was threatened by him. And then we walked away, which was out of tune with what the masses wanted. Add in the asinine Rose Bowl comments he made when people were getting frustrated with the search, and he could have done a much better job managing the narrative. We got to the right answer, and I am sure his hands were tied, but its obvious why that perception exists.

I agree with some of what you are saying, but in any negotiation, the strongest card to play is your next best alternative. If Pat/RU went on a public relations campaign trying placate upset fans, Greg and his agent could have used that as leverage to get more of what they wanted. Perceptions do matter, but what matters more is the end result, and it seems that Greg buried the hatchet quite quickly. What is puzzling is that fans who don't know all the details (probably only Greg S, Greg B and Pat know) still carry a grudge almost 3 years later. It's time to move on?

negotiating:
person # 1 asks for a seat on the moon.
person #2 counters with a spot 20,000 leagues below the sea.
Both act like the others isn't trying their best for a fair deal and people ( who really don't know what's going on between them) start chosing which side they're on as both sides negotiate an agreement that winds up at sea level and is satisfactory to all parties even if they didn't get some of the things they wanted and gave in to the other on some issues.
Person #1 shakes person #2's hand over the deal made and they both walk out of the room like friends

I sit right by Greg Brown at the RAC. I can tell you that when Schiano is at the RAC - his first level of business is to meet and greet Greg Brown. They ll schmooze for 5-10 minutes before GS even looks Hobbs’ way. In fact if Greg Brown is not at the RAC, GS will schmooze with Greg Briwn’s sister before he even looks towards Hobbs

I don’t know if there’s friction between GS and Pat Hobbs but I do find GS actions towards Hobbs to be a bit perplexing

Note that the newspapers were publishing inside info about the negotiations, and the info consistently made Rutgers look bad. Do you think Hobbs was leaking that information to the papers? No way, that had to have come from Schiano's side.

Everyone always says how media-savvy Schiano is. Given the millions at stake why wouldn't Schiano cooperate with the Star Ledger in order to put pressure on Rutgers?

Remember that after Schiano "walked away," the next round of negotiations ended with Schiano's team giving up ground and then signing the deal. That sure does not make it seem like Hobbs caved to public pressure. Instead, it looks like it forced Schiano to come back to Earth and sign a more-reasonable deal.

I think this article is something that the Ledger owed Hobbs for a long time.

It's Schiano's job to sell the program and fundraise, fundraise, fundraise. If he just plopped down in a chair next to Hobbs instead of husting around and working the room, then Schiano would be blowing an important opportunity to gladhand.

Phil, often Hobbs is sitting with a big shot and their family. The Governor, corporate guy of xyz company , former players, etc. 99 percent of the time, nobody at The RAC would recognize the face of a President, Vice-President, Director of Marketing of xyz company. Who knows how many times the big wigs at SHI and Jersey Mikes came to Rutgers basketball games before they signed up for naming rights. But you can bet Schiano knows who they are when he walks into The RAC. No reason to crowd Hobbs the minute he walks in. He always gets over there and I notice he schmoozes with Hobbs, the Governor, and whoever is sitting in those six or eight seats around Hobbs.

Facilities and fundraising generally moving in the right direction: CHECK
No scandals, embarrassments or self- inflicted wounds: CHECK

What else is there to talk about?

Schiano wouldn't be doing his job if he wasted an opportunity to have face time with a major donor to talk to the AD who he probably sees every day. In fact, it's highly likely that Hobbs and GS coordinate what needs to be said to VIPs like Brown, and Hobbs specifically coordinated with GS on what VIPs were going to be in attendance and that he needed to talk to at these games.

This is the obvious correct answer.
