It was an honor to share the room of someone like this.

RIP, Walter. Always had the pleasure for the past 10 years or so chatting with Walter after each BB game with Piscataway Mike; his brother and a minion of others. Over the past year, his health declined badly. In fact several weeks ago (I forget which game it was), I helped Walter from his seat to the hallway corridors as he was insistent about getting to as many games as he can. Walter despite his health issues was able to participate in the ceremony at halftime about 1-2 months ago when there were approx 50 ex RU BB players being honored. He was huge RU BB fan and loved Coach Pikiell. I'm sure there will be a moment of silence before the PSU game to honor him. He also lived a heckuva life if you read his obituary. RIP.

Walter was a very nice man and a major person for Rutgers in many capacities. I met him 15 years ago I believe on our Court Club bus trip when we defeated Villanova 71-68 at the Pavilion. I also took bus trips with him I think to Georgeown, St. John's and Connecticut. He was always very nice to talk with. I also always enjoyed seeing him at Court Club meetings. I am praying for him and his family. He will be missed.

I met Walter one time, about 15 or 20 years ago, I believe in the West Palm Beach airport. I saw him walking toward me and I recognized him as a guy I would see, from my view in section 204, walking on the b-ball floor toward his courtside seats or standing up during timeouts.

I’m never shy when I recognize someone, and I usually just give them a warm hello and introduce myself. In this case at the airport, I said, “Hey, I know you, from the Rutgers games.” Walter smiled and said, “Yeah, that’s right, as a matter a fact I’m heading up there now,” and he shook my hand and introduced himself.

We stood there for a solid 5 or 10 minutes, during which he told me he lives in Florida (in the winter?) but goes back up just for the games. We talked Rutgers Basketball and Football and in general the state of RU athletics. I got the impression he was pretty tied in and likely had lots of insight and inside knowledge about our program. I assumed he was a big donor but it was just a guess.

I remember him from that day as a completely genuine man, and obviously someone who bled scarlet and truly loved RU. I remember thinking I was proud to call myself a Rutgers alum, in large part knowing I was part of an honorable club that included good and fine people like Walter.

Me too and it’s why I felt he deserved this thread I started.

Like I said in the OP, to me it was a big deal for this young alum (at the time - LOL) to be in the room with people like Dr. Bauer and Mr. Leib...the honor was mine.
