WBB: Interesting comment from Coquese Washington

No surprise. Washington's style is completely different.

The biggest advantage of Coach Stringer's style was that you were (or should be) "in" every game if your team was playing well, of course provided your talent fit your style. This produced quite a few upsets over the years, including the "Week to Remember" that many fans have probably forgotten.

It will be interesting to see a different style, and how it plays out. One of the 2 things that propelled UConn to its status today (the other is talent) was playing a style that featured both high quality defense and high quality offense. Most teams struggle to feature both at once.

So does winning championships. Doesn’t matter how it’s done. The defense Stringer taught never hampered the offense. It was a lack of innovation, creation and execution on offense. Nobody cared the scores when we went to the Title game except the fact we lost.

Exactly. You can't win zero to negative 1. Defense is only good if you have some semblance of offense to protect leads in games.

To be fair CV Stringer had a great run here but the game had somewhat passed her by. Defense is valued but that only sells to a particular women player. The name of the game is even more geared towards the offensive side of WBB.

I am not sure what "her teams at psu didn't ever scare" means, especially when they won a few B1G titles during her time there.

While I somewhat agree with your point about her teams at PSU, I like the hire. She had huge success before we and Md. came into the conference. Back then, nobody in the B1G scared us, outside of maybe OhioSt, Iowa, and (occasionally)Purdue. "Scare" may be too strong of a word in reference to this. Since joining, we were able to pretty much, dominate the series with PSU.

In fairness to coach, that was... at PSU. She didn't have eye-poppin talent those years after we joined. Don't know what they had before that because I didn't really follow the WBB Big Ten. Her best player was trying to get back from an injury during coach's last seasons, IIRC.

Also, a major difference is the staff she has working with her now. I'm thinking and hoping that this talented assistant staff will allow Coquese to be her best version as coach because all are very experienced to the point where she may not feel as alone at the top with the major decision-making, as it appeared she was at PSU from my outside point of view. IMO

I think it's all going to come down to recruiting. Just have to get that first 'big-name signing' to get it rolling. Recruiting the home region will probably be the best way to get it started.

Also, the current players have to be the recruiters for the program as much as the coaches, by showing steady improvement, individually and as a team. .....and by presenting that inviting culture that is being established.
