whats so tough about defending OSU is that they have two All American caliber runners in their backfield, Ezekial Elliott and JT Barrett. someone brought up a great point in another thread where he said, we don't seem to be delivering any big hits anymore. By big hits, i mean Courtney Greene or Joe Lefeged style ANNIHILATION. I hope that changes tomorrow night, and that every time JT Barrett decides to run with the ball, we HAMMER him.
We need to be physical with OSU, otherwise they're going to run us over, just as they did in the horseshoe last year.

Barrett is a beast in his own right, and if we get into the backfield we better not go for the big hit because he will avoid it. Not only is he big, he has great pocket presence and is quick, so the best approach for an LB or corner or lineman who has a shot at getting to Barrett is to contain him rather than blowing past him at full speed when Barrett spins away from the impending hit. Make Barrett move, then tackle him or at least disrupt his throwing motion.

Just protect Chris Laviano and give him time... KemokoTuray has already been given his assignment for tomorrow's game...

Agree with Al.

Barrett is going to run. When he does, he needs to feel it.

We also need to hammer Braxton Miller. He'll line up in at least 4 different positions from slot, to wide-out to backfield to wildcat QB. Too much speed. Where you can spy the QB, this guy is literally all over the football field.

You can still spy JT ...just make sure you hit him often...let him know we're around... they will certainly try to get hits on Laviano...

Certainly agree that you spy JT, however, Miller's positioning and speed is a killer, not to mention the pounding from Zeke

Remember the year we took out the opposing quarterback virtually every week? That was hard-hitting, and a bunch of teams like Michigan State say they've never been hit as hard this year as to when Rutgers hit them. I like that style of play. Let us be known for hard, clean hits.

Is your QB mobile? does he have wheels or is he a pocket guy?

Our Dline has been blowing up pocket QB's this year.

No one will confuse him for Tommy Frazier, and he is more of pocket guy, but he is fairly mobile and can make a few plays with his legs. He won't win you many games playing to run first though.

Our OL will need to have the game of their lives, no doubt.

And that is what I miss most about Rutgers football

I wish we could bring that back

My guess is we go back to that passive zone we used earlier in the season for this game in a vain attempt to limit OSU's big play possibilities.

I disagree. I think we mix it up, just like we did against MSU. Last year we used zone against them and our defense was destroyed.

We were hitting plenty hard against MSU a few weeks back. Hardest hitting game by us since the Schiano years, IMO. Was nice to see. I think we'll see something similar tomorrow night.

That isn't uncommon when we play a more traditional offense. We play more downhill. When we play more spread teams, even if run oriented from it, we tend to play on our heels.

I think our problems defending this come from our own coaches offensive philosophy. They simply don't get spreads, we don't see it in practice with any real quality to it, and we just can't defend it. Our coaches don't understand it from either side of the ball.

The opposite holds true when we play more traditional offenses. We understand how better to defend them because that is what our coaches know.

There are a lot of keys that have turn right for us to win this game, but one of those is limiting their scoring to field goals. If can do that, along with exceptional OL play, we might have a fighters chance.

Obviously we can't turn the ball the over, but allowing easy td's is going to spell big trouble fast.
