According to the November 20, 1893 New York Tribune, “The question of a change of the college color is being agitated at Rutgers. The color is scarlet and was adopted on May 17, 1869. The college is essentially Dutch in history and sympathy and it is urged that orange would be the appropriate color. Princeton, Chicago and Syracuse all have orange, however, and for this reason there is a strong sentiment adverse to the change.”
