What Conference USA's new TV deal may tell us about conference expansion

D-bag writer with a mouthful of sour grapes:

"But perhaps the most notable addition is CUSA's 4th partner, beIN SPORTS, a channel that you almost certainly don't get unless you're an avid fan of international soccer and paid extra for it. beIN SPORTS, a spinoff of Al Jazeera, will carry 10 football games, and a slew of CUSA non-revenue sports, like baseball and soccer.
Fox Sports, a previous CUSA TV partner, pulled out of the bidding in this cycle.

So that means that CUSA football games will be on channel you have, one channel you might have, one channel you probably don't have if you're out of market, and one channel you really don't have unless you have like, all of the channels.

CUSA's TV deal is also notable because it is the first conference TV contract to go for less money than the previous one. Under the previous contract, member schools made around $1 million, but under the new contract, TV rights are expected to fall to between $300,000 to $400,000"

Uhhhhh we are good at women's soccer. And wrestling. Bad journalism.

Give him credit, he mentions that!

"The Big Ten was able to add crappy teams in big markets and make a lot of money. Why couldn't CUSA do that? Has anybody else done it?
The B1G was absolutely able to do that. Powered by Maryland (bad at football, good at a few other sports) and Rutgers (good at, uh...women's soccer?)"

It also tells us how likely it will be that the Power 5 will become its own division, relegating the G5 to FCS status.

What Conference USA's contract tells us about conference expansion is Conference USA got raided to the point of irrelevancy and the networks took notice.

Conference USA in 2011:
East Carolina
Houston (finished ranked 18)
Marshall
Memphis
Rice
SMU
Southern Miss (finished ranked 20)
Tulane
Tulsa
UAB
UCF
UTEP

Conference USA in 2016:
Marshall
Rice
UTEP
FAU
Lousiana Tech
Middle Tennessee State
North Texas
Old Dominion
UTSA
WKU

They are essentially the Sunbelt and startups, which is worth about $350K

Because how many other 'crappy' teams are out there that not only bring the NY & Philly markets, but are also large (40-50k enrollments), land grant state flagship research institutions and are AAU accredited (and if you want to throw in some tradition and history, then throw in also played in the first ever college football game)? That is the profile of a B1G school and there are only so many schools out there which meet those criteria. None of the current or potential future Conf USA schools match up anywhere close to that. Yes, our football may have been mediocre over the past 10-20 years, but we bring a lot other things to the table that other schools simply can't. Our location alone was enough to seal the deal, but the rest of the factors above also add to the value we bring that the Conf USA schools can't match.

Conference USA teams should discontinue their football programs since no one care to watch them. It's like Division III and Il which I never watch on Tv.

This, although I disagree with the word 'raid' simply because it wasn't like a SWAT team broke into the Sun Belt and demanded all of those teams come with them 'or else'. They went on their own. In reality, the AAC is CUSA+UConn, C-USA is the Sun Belt, and the Sun Belt is the FCS SoCon + whoever was left from the WAC that didn't go to the MW.

Well, when the last contract was signed, all of the CUSA schools were in either FCS or the SunBelt, and the new contract is much better than what they were getting before they joined CUSA.

This is the basic truth. The "journalist" should have compared CUSA's new TV contract with the last Sunbelt contract. That would provide a more realistic view. And the next AAC contract should be compared to the last CUSA contract, hybridized with the last BE contract.

...one of my favorite little dopey message board moments- in 2013, Temple fans talking about how the AAC 'losing' Rutgers is really no big deal/ we bring nothing of value, and a couple of days later the Belk, Russell Athletic and Pinstripe Bowls all announce they're not renewing with the AAC. I obviously know UL leaving was also a huge factor (among other things) but the timing always made me laugh.

We were below 30K average attendance in 2003, 31K in 2004. 33K in 2005.

Shhhhh. Don't let the fact that we didn't do much of anything to merit our precious lifeline get in the way of the condescension and self-congratulatory gloating. The only gloating should be directed at those who didn't grasp how much we would bring to the table simply by being there.

Some of you people should stop searching for negative Rutgers comments! We are in the Big Ten. Who cares what writers I have never heard of think.

'xactly! We made it to the promised land. Now, it's up to us to make good on the opportunity. I only expect things to get better from here... all things. They can say what they want, but it won't change that.

Bingo.

Sour grapes? Do you realize the writer is a BYU fan? Knowing that, go back and read his second paragraph and experience an "Ah ha!" moment. This is a guy who is trying to gauge what BYU's next contract would be worth and if it would make sense to give a big, wet, sloppy kiss to the Big 12 if they want to add BYU their conference or not.

I don't even know what teams are in Conference USA.

I am going to make the assumption that if your team isn't a member, you don't either.

I'm actually more upset that I don't have beIN because of all the La Liga games I'm missing.

The schism between the P5 and G5 conferences keeps getting bigger and bigger, and some once relevant G5 schools are on the outside looking in. And they are getting desperate.

Vanquish The Foe is a BYU site, therefore, it was written from a BYU perspective. I concede the term "BYU fan" was incorrect.

As long as our FELLOW Big Ten schools love Rutgers in the Big Ten, thanks to our Research, location and $$$$$$$$$ that we bring, everyone else can go pound sand. Haters will forever hate.

Dude, you can't say that without the appropriate image! Let me take care of that:
