As per a discussion that I had last week from someone very reputable prior to the Minn. game:
- EJ was gone and search and/or candidate list had commenced.
- RU is / was looking at 2 top candidates - one whose name has rarely, if at all, been mentioned on the board - and another whose name has been mentioned often. I say "was looking" because it's possible that RU contacted both and possibly 1 or both have no interest. I have no idea.
- Herb Sendek as well as Danny Hurley are not one of the 2 top candidates
- One of the candidates in my estimation is totally out of reach for Rutgers - given his perceived salary expectations; success to date, etc.- however if he was hired, we'd all be doing cartwheels - as it would be a grand slam hire.
- The other candidate in my estimation is very attainable and if hired - will be met with - solid if not overwhelming - approval of all on the board. Personally, I think this guy would be very interested and is affordable.
- None of the top 2 candidates told to me are on Bobby Deren's list - which I must say was quite underwhelming (not disputing the validity) - though I'd be fine with Danny Hurley as HC..
I did not want to post until the EJ situation became official. (On a personal note, I am surprised that EJ was fired as I felt he'd be back next year given the perceived financial constraints at RU and a chance for him to compete with a full and improved roster).
When the new HC becomes official, I'll advise whether he was one of the 2 candidates above.
Sorry for being cryptic and non - disclosing - however I have too much respect for the source - but if either of the candidates he mentioned is hired - we'd all be very happy......
Also, just my opinion, but given what Hobbs has done to date - with Flood and EJ - it's rather apparent - at least to me - that he has "carte blanche" to do what is right and best for RU Athletics with Long Term Objectives in mind - and thus with the candidate who I think is a big time stretch - who knows given Hobbs' support with Barchi; Christie and Trenton.......and Big 10 Revenue Stream down the road....
