I am sure this was known for a while.
Why not make the arrests months ago?
Why two days before the season opener?

Its one of 2 things.

1. Police investigations sometimes take time.

2. Its part of the grand NJ media/Julie Herman/Unnamed University Sources conspiracy that's aiming to tear down our football program.

If you make a grand entrance onto a football field practice to arrest players it gets much more media attention than if you do it behind closed doors.

Really hope you aren't serious about #2.

It's because all the players would be there. It really makes it simple to round them all up at one time, much harder when they're off campus.

Good timing. Let it get jumbled up in the start of the kick off of the college football season.

Police always prefer to make arrest where it puts them at the least amount of risk for personal injury. Just think about it. Would you rather arrest a player at his home where he could have a gun or at practice where you know he not armed. That why police like to make arrests at work rather then at home.

They done it at Penn State also. It pretty common.

Well, the timing was clearly designed for maximum attention.

This is it. Make a splash. Did they have reporters and media with them for these arrests.. or did they assume the media would be there? Someone is trying to make a name for him or herself. Could also be the most efficient way to get them.. let them all come back to campus and get em all at once instead of having to go to their hometowns.

Do you really think the police waited months to arrest people involved in a crime? I can just imagine the conversation at Police HQ- "Hey we need to arrest these guys for this crime. Nah let's wait a couple of months and get them two days before their first game."

I know we're all angry about what happened but there isn't some grand conspiracy here with these arrests.

Theyve been at practice for the last month everyday, why two days before the season opener...

And the assault charge was probably just added on to make this bigger... If the kid with broken jaw doesnt press charges that aint gonna stick...or one can take blame and the rest will get off....

This is weird that they waited so long for armed robbery

I am not a conspiracy guy......but the timing makes me VERY suspicious......

or perhaps the prosecutor/police needed to speak with additional witnesses and/or victims, who did not come back to the area until this week. the show at practice today was bothersome but the timing of the arrests does not seem unusual to me.

Nobody needs to "press charges" in an aggravated assault charge.

It's the State of NJ v. Whomever

Not Harry Balls v. Whomever

I'm not. Next man/men up. Expect it to be a distraction, but they need to keep chopping.

Yes and no. If you're the backup and now you have a chance to play, well yes next man up. It ain't personal. You've worked too hard to get to this point. Now if you're already a starter and your boy is the one is the bad situation, it does become a distraction.

Doug,
How long does it take for a back-up to feel confident being on the field in a live game ?

I believe the lynch pin here is Tejay Johnson. He was involved in both cases. So they had to arrest everyone from both incidents on the same day. I found it strange too that they waited so long and then arrested everyone from two separate incidents from two different dates on the same day. Johnson sounds like a real scumbag.

You sort of hit it on the head my son is a police officer last week he should me what came through the line. It was a bulletin sent across the state looking for Johnson sadly the picture of Johnson on the teletype was of him in his Rutgers jersey. Although it was believed he was wielding the bat one of those guys had a gun. Not good! It wasn't my position to post it but I knew it was going down and I don't think that Flood or Hermann had any knowledge of this.

where there's drugs, there's always bigger fish to fry

A lot depends on the ego of the player. The longer you have been in the program the easier it is. The more snaps you take in practice makes the transition to games smooth. Practice sometime can be as difficult or harder than games. A coach can watch your every move and be all over you when you make a mistake... that's pressure.

This this and this. I think you solved the mystery here because this makes the most sense. I'm thinking T. Johnson was the snitch for every reason you just listed. This is the way it seems to add up.

Doug,
Were you ever in a situation (high school or college) where there would be so many new people at one time ?

They did it to purposely push someone's agenda. This could have been done any number of ways but someone at the university has a bone to pick with the football program. Feel bad for you guys.

Well, the timing was clearly designed for maximum attention.

Like 2008 when they deliberatly went after Schiano as season began. That's when the "Forget-About-Me-I-love-You" (F.A.M.I.L.Y) stuff got started and Mulcahy went down over nonsense. Schiano never really got over that mess.

T Johnson has a bail of 625k. In July Middlesex County gave a murderer (Vito Negro) 750k bail. Three Rutgers guys have a half million or over bail set (armed robbery in my area gets 25-50k) yet they can wait 5 months to act on crimes considered closer to murder than aggravated assault

At Colorado my freshman year. CU had to replace 3 starters. There were several RS sophomores and junior expecting to start since they wait their time. New DB Coach Yaralian said all positions are open. At the end of camp most of the starters and backups were true freshmen, RS freshmen and a few sophomores. I got crapped on by the upperclassmen because of a coaching decision. I was hungry and they weren't.

in the Bergen Record today the Headline was:

Jets' Geno Smith won't file charges against Enemkpali

"Geno Smith said Monday he will not press charges against former teammate IK Enemkpali over the punch that fractured his jaw last month"

why havent the police filed charges then?

Still no clear answer on the timing - the nimrods at SL aren't good enough to pursue that angle.

hard to believe it was simply coincidence regarding the time it took for the police to investigate

i don't doubt there are people with an agenda against RU FB program - but hard to imagine someone (months' ago) figured out a strategy to wait until game week to drop the bomb.

But, why would you do arrests for separate incidences at the same time if it wasn't a conscious strategy?

I thought I read that the "student" that was robbed was arrested on Aug 28. That the police raided his home and confiscated $36K, a bunch of weed, and a stun gun. If that is true the timing makes a little more sense.

In general, there are several reasons.

1. Felony vs. misdemeanor

2. Willingness of the victim to cooperate and testify

3. Prosecutions ability to win
