why now on the arrests?

This is textbook publicity stunt.

They had tejay and they had the other kid who helped Rob the drug dealers.

Then they dug up some assault charge on 4 other players so that they could storm practice and arrest a handful of players in grand fashion. Now the news looks as if all the players were part of one common scheme, meanwhile 4 out of 5 current players were involved in a minor altercation. They were way overcharged. This all goes to the nonsense.

Someone was investigating drug activity and robbery of drug dealers. During the investigation, tejay Johnson popped up - they saw he was a former Rutgers player, so they said "hmmm, this could be big" and they found a way to make it big.

The kids robbed were dealing drugs. The fight took place and they take place on campuses all across America. But due to the sensationalism and opportunism in this case - its some huge "turmoil".

Yes, investigations take time. Yes, law enforcement leaks "confidential" information to the press when it behooves them.

Announcing on the Thursday before a log holiday weekend maximizes press attention. That is a slow news time. NJ prosecutors might not be elected but that does not mean they don't use media to promote themselves and their office.

A friend in law enforcement reports it has a lot to do with the ongoing conflict between NBPD and RUPD over policing the 5th & 6th wards. The NB pols haven't got what they wanted from RU and this is a little gotcha action.

Boggs didn't pop up, just Johnson?
Do you think Johnson confessed to being part of the assault? when five specimen football players are involved in a fight and punches are thrown, I call that assault unless it was self defense.
I really don't think it's a big enough feather in anyone's hat or people care enough for the authorities to scheme up some kind of publicity stunt.

Most likely this was just roughly when everything came together. This was not like the NBPD cracked the Lufthansa heist - it was not the 'crime of the century' nobody is going to make their big career break on this collection of criminal stupidity.

General sense of all of this is that the focus was & is on - the break-ins & thefts & drugs - so- thus the greater attention would seem to be on Johnson and Boggs and the individuals involved in the break-ins & thefts ..... sounds like the street fight / assault got sucked into the vortex as a result of Johnson having been part of it - and once it clearly showed up in the NBPD's big picture of events - it was not going to be ignored....

This was posted above, but I'm on the side they chose to do it this way as they would all be together, easier to round up and less likely to resist. Purely a guess on my part, but I think the lead that broke open the cases came via someone in Florida who got in trouble over the summer and looking to bargain.

My question was not "why now?" as if this makes bigger headlines in late august as opposed to early August. But instead I asked, why arrest all these guys, seemingly for 2 seperate incidences on the same day, and yeah one being months after the incident took place.

I think you answered it all pretty well.

I also wondered why guys who just happened to be there for a street fight got caught up in this, but I guess devil is in the details, which there are few of.

Not a bad theory. I figured someone was pointing the finger from somewhere, Dailey would make sense.

The whole thing is sad on multiple levels and honestly no one is to blame but the perpetrators themselves. Simple question, since the arrests happened in April why didn't coach flood immediately make adjustments to the roster and get the second string on the 1st Team for some valuable playing time in practice? Just curious.

I am not a conspiracy guy......but the timing makes me VERY suspicious......

Yes and no. Investigations do take time and taking them at practice puts them all in one place and minimizes the chance of problems. However, what I wonder is as opposed to Thursday why it couldn't have been done Monday, or even a week or two before that during fall practice.

Arrests(at least not for current players, was Johnson arrested in April?) did not happen in April, the fight/assualt did. Thats part of what makes for the confusion on the timing of the arrests.

"the arrests" did not happen in April - the crimes happened in April - the investigation began - it has been reported that Flood was made aware of an investigation & that he promptly informed Rutgers. If there had been 'arrests' it is likely that certain players would have been dismissed right then as a result of having been previously suspended.

GD - this looks like something from the Ped State site. How about blaming the perps period? Who cares how they were taken down.

Anyone who has committed home invasions and armed robberies should get the full brunt of the law and full dose of scorn from society.

But I do wonder about the assault and or riot? All things considered Rutgers did what had to be done, but what exactly are the details there?

Wonder how involved Delon and Gross were in the fight. Boggs and Johnson are going to prison, and Peele/Barnwell both had issues before. Gross gets a chance to play B1G football after walking on, and Stephenson was on pace to be a 3 year starter, hope it was worth throwing your scholarship away.
