Why sum are mad at Geo...

Seems to be a reflection of a few things (none of which I think ought to cause people to dislike him, just summarizing what seems to be the feeling of some people):
  1. He is historically a low-percentage shooter, and people also think he is weak in man defense
  2. He is outspoken on issues like NIL
  3. Some people believe that HE was one of the primary culprits of "chemistry" issues on the team last year, as he is one of Pike's "favorites" and thus received (in people's minds) preferential treatment over guys like Young and Mathis.
The stats are the stats, but I don't agree with the more intangible arguments about Geo. He seems like a good kid, a leader, and has been clutch for us.

my feeling is that as a 5th year senior, i want to see consistency and leadership and I want it from the get go. Being a senior and coming out of the gate with his first half vs Lehigh is a disappointment in my eyes. Lets see what happens in the next few games. He needs to bring it all the time. Not just in stretches. You cannot just show up for the big games. Remember we have a big group of under classmen looking to him as an example

Geo is a great kid and fine representation of Rutgers. He was an unheralded player who was the first to buy into Pikiell and he has been rewarded and will go down as a historic player for RU> I dont agree with the off court stuff and some people may feel that can be a distraction

Never been more disappointed in our fanbase. People are miserable. It’s gotta be the NiL thing and they just don’t want to admit it. Or maybe he kneels or something. But these people are pathetic and will never EVER be happy even when RU goes to the final four or football plays in the Rose Bowl. Just use your “ignore” feature I am much happier reading these boards since I started really going to town on it !

I care nothing about the NIL. Its annoying that Baker can blow game after game, never get better after 5 years of playing basketball, etc. Yet still be worshipped by some on this board. It's just weird. I get that the kid has charisma. He's just not a very good basketball player.

If he's not a good basketball player, what do you think of the rest of the guys on the team? lol

I'm not mad at him, and he has far surpassed where he was ranked. But I hoped to see continued growth and living up to the hype he gets from guys like Andy Katz. He's been pretty much the same guy statistically for three straight seasons, which is a very steady player and a team leader. Will he elevate his game in his final season as a Knight?

As for #3, it's really just a couple of JY fanboys who post the same thing over and over and over....

A few posters seem disappointed that he plateaued 3 years ago and hasn't developed yet into a truly great player. I'm glad he came back and have a feeling that his best basketball is ahead of him.

I really don't get. What a bright independent thinking young man who I think represents RU amazingly well. He is also a talented bb player. I enjoy his game a lot.
No one is attacking his character. No one is saying he's a bad kid. So your 2nd sentence is totally irrelevant. When people critique someone's athletic prowess that doesn't mean they think they're a bad human being.

Were you saying that when he was hitting game winners every other game? Cause I don’t think you were.

I haven’t seen anyone posting that’s mad at Geo recently

Glad he had a good second half against Lehigh. He was struggling real bad and people were turning on him in my seating area.

Some are just so negative. Geo has been an excellent representative of RU since he arrived at RU. If it wasn't for him many athletes would not be able to take advantage of the NIL. Also he sprained both ankles last year and had covid before the season started. He is not an All American but he is a very good player and I very happy that he is a very important part of our team.

Interesting thread. I’m not mad at Geo, but I can guess why this came about? I was disappointed that he was so distracted last season with the NIL debate; that we came close to stopping or postponing our first round NCAA game. Think about that for a second? Geo comes here as an unheralded recruit and buys into to the 5 year Pikiell plan and after all he goes through with the cancelled season and obvious ncaa bid in year 4; he’s willing to lead the charge in protesting our first NCAA game in 30 years.

I’m not going to pretend to understand the issues from the other side. I’m only an alum and huge college basketball fan who has been rooting for Geo from the moment he arrived on campus. And truth be told, this NIL stuff may seem good for the kids, but just wait and see how jealous some are going to get from having lucrative deals while others get very little or nothing. I think it’s going to be a complete mess to be honest.
Pikiell said it right. It’s going to be real challenge for kids to be students, college athletes and businessman all at the same time.

With that said, we played one game. Geo and Paul had a real off night. I think it’s a wake up call and should make them realize that every team is going to embrace coming into a sold out RAC (JMA) to try and knock us off and we need to focus; regardless of the opponent.

You bring up some really good points there regarding the injuries and COVID. Throughout his career he has a history of trying to come back and play through injury and illness faster than expected. Is he a perfect player? No. Is he a gamer? Yes.

I don't think anyone is mad at Geo personalty but some are disappointed that he isn't living up to their expectations as a player.
His NIL involvement does piss some off, but I feel that anger is more about the NIL itself and Geo is just getting hit in the crossfire because he's one of the leaders of the NIL movement.

I agree with this, especially regarding the NIL fallout. But I also think we as RU fans have a history of getting pissed at players for not becoming what we think they should be instead of appreciating them for what they are. I think Jeff Greer was a good example of this phenomenon.

I;m sure you know better than those who made Geo an All Big Ten honorable mention.
By the way, RHJ was so mediocre. he only made the 3rd team,
Both selected by the Big Ten coaches
There are 3 PGs on the All Big Ten team, and 3PGs on the Coach's honorable mention (5 on Media's). Geo was on the preseason All Big Ten, but ended up with honorable mention by coaches. Media selected MJ and JY rather than him. The only reason Geo was selected by coaches is that they saw him as the leader of 20-21 Rutgers team.
Corey Sanders never made the honorable mention by coaches because of our poor performance during the time. If you think Geo is more talented than Corey, then I have nothing to say.
Also, RHJ regressed a lot since January 2021. Luckily his explosive performance in late-2020 kept his seat. I have high expectations for RHJ and Cliff this year, but I have very little confidence in Geo improving his game.

lol - let the hate flow through you..

Baker's not a superstar, but saying he's not talented is just fantasy land. He's a starting guard in the Big Ten, who has collected all conference honors in multiple years (Coaches: Hon. Mention in 2021, 3rd team in 2020, Hon. Mention in 2019; Media: Hon. Mention in 2020) - you don't get there without talent.

He also finished last year 5th in career assists, 8th in career steals, and 18th in career points at Rutgers. But sure, no talent.

This is what makes his play sooo.. suspicious.. why can't Geo be "clutch" in the first 35 minutes? Is he saving effort for the final 5? is he not motivated until the game is on the line?

I think maybe that's why we should go to stats... I know he is a leader and favorite and all that... and he probably needs to be a starter and get all the minutes in order to maximize his chances to get some kind of professional career playing afterward... but if we can get better playing someone else.. a real leader would step aside. (thinking of Brian Leonard moving to fullback here). Not that I am saying we have a candidate now.. but let us leave the option open and see if one emerges.

OP is stating his opinion and looking for an argument. Mad at Geo, where is that coming from? I hear guys attacking his game, like a couple of whiney morons in Row B of 105 (ridiculous short chubby old dudes that never played) screaming anytime he misses a shot or gets beat on D (which happens to every player every game). But mad, that’s odd.

I have always thought that the reason Geo’s second half stats are better than his first half stats is that he’s too NICE. In other words, he doesn’t want to be a ball hog, and he defers to other guys in the first half.

No problem at all with Geo, gonna miss him and his step back jumper after this year.

I will say his performance at times last year and the first 2 games this year can be head-scratching.

Geo is incredibly overrated.
not overrated except in some minds.
Geo is a good player that has stepped up many times and by doing so, some thrust the greatness label upon him and now are disappointed that he isn't the Rutgers Oscar Robertson
