I hope so. Last night's defense looked better than it has all year. It's like we finally remembered what a blitz was. It's strange that it took 4 games before we saw this D.

It's almost looking like the question that will make or break the season isn't which QB should be playing, but which defense will show up?

Need the DBs to get up to speed on the scheme. They are getting there....hence a more aggressive defensive plan. Also, tough to blitz a spread passing attack (WSU)...the defense is stretched to the max. Next week is one of the most important games of the season if RU wants to get to a bowl. If they lose, I don't see it happening.

The blitzes were well designed. RU had people getting to the QB untouched. I also think that the defense was more effective because MSU runs a more conventional offense. That's the kind of offense that this defense is designed to stop.

I agree... totally laughable that people would have the impression that what was done last night was not part of Flood and staff's game plan. Dont they read the news and understand what the terms of the suspension were. I though these people were Rutgers fans.

This is it. No blitzes early in season because DBs were so dang green. Now with experience under their belt they are getting more comfortable and that is freeing up Rossi more. Also, Wilkins, Hogan, and Bateky are progressing, which is helping DL rotation. Not quite sold on MLB (Lewis) right now. He's good, but inconsistent.

In the WSU pregame thread I told a WSU fan that since Leach is a passing game coach and has had time to prepare for a depleted defensive backfield for Rutgers that Rutgers will likely send DBs on blitzes early and often. The idea was that you can take an athletic frosh DB and tell him to blitz and he can do that... but they might not be up to playing man or always do the right thing in sophisticated coverage swaps and the like.

Almost a month later we finally see a DB blitz.

If we have the opportunity to blitz I'm sure we will but remember this....not every offensive scheme allows that...the spread teams are an issue especially if the front 4 doesn't get pressure on the QB... everything starts up front...I did see a great effort by the LBers... and the secondary has made much improvement over the past several games...so let's see if they can bring it against Indiana which is a decent squad especially with Subfield.

Flood would've called a different game, maybe that leads to a win or it may have lead to a blow out. The coordinators have just as much input on the gameplan as Flood, Flood would tell you that himself. The coaches on the field executed the gameplan, they should get all the credit. You can have the best gameplan in the world but if you don't execute it on game day it means nothing. Maybe, starting the year with 2nd/3rd string backfield forced us to not blitz leaving inexperience guys on an island to get burned and kill confidence. With more experience maybe DC feels like the guts can be left alone to blitz.

The point you are making is proving that the Blitz scheme will not change when Flood returns. You are correct. Flood and his coordinators make the game plan before the game and the D coordinator likely makes all the calls during the game. That is what happened while he was suspended and that is what will happen when he returns. His presence or absence from the sideline during a game has no bearing on the d- scheme.

And just like Flood would get killed if he hired and retained a terrible O or D coordinator and would take the blame... he gets credit for hiring and helping to scheme with his coordinators during the prep week

It is not a matter of giving KF credit for the game plan, just that the plan was created during the week and he approved it and depending who we play the rest of the year, it reasonable to expect to see continued aggressive play.

We are playing two completely different offenses so expect the defensive game plan to be more like Kansas and WSU (where we try to keep everything in front of us on 1st and 2nd down). Indiana spreads you out and throws lots of timing routes. Michigan St lines up with 2 TEs, runs Power O and dares you to stop it.
