You do realize this is at minimum a 5-year rebuild

Uh, I think they’re recruiting like hell and the AAU guys, advisors and, uh, uncles have no interest. You think the typical 4-star from a city in the northeast or at a New England prep school cares whether he’s a short drive from Manhattan or in Manhattan, Kansas? Or thinking about campus diversity, at lifetime business connections or short-term internship opportunities? No, no and no.

Coaches need to convince kids that they can prepare them for the NBA, keep them out of trouble and keep them healthy better than the other power conference schools recruiting them.

If you’ve got a legal way to convince a few of the top talent to come to RU, there are a half dozen under-employed former RU coaches that would love to talk to you.
Hypothetical question:
If Rutgers hired Calipari or Izzo tomorrow, how long would it take to turn around the program?

They would have the track record and credibility of developing NBA guys

Feeling good about players headed out only works when we feel better about players coming in. And justifying diamonds in the rough and under recruited players doesn’t do that for me.

I want Montez Mathis to be nasty. But folks are tempering our expectations next year about his level of contribution.

Pikiell’s recruiting is eerily similar to Ash’s. How is that working out?

The class coming in is decent but we need to add at least one more player to play significant minutes.

If this recruiting class is done and this is representative of the classes we will be getting, nothing will change and we have 12 win seasons for many years.

NCAA in Year 2. You got $25 mill or so stashed in Bitcoins to help endow the job. A little short on revenue to hire a legend with only 8,000 in the RAC (minus the students).

Have patience and faith in the rebuild. It will help to get rid of 2 non-pike players who like to play hero ball (iso ball) in freeman and Corey (let’s hope he goes. Time to move on and learn to play without him). Hopefully bullock transfers. I doubt Mensah will transfer.
Most hero ballers can shoot. Freeman and Corey are players with limited skill sets.

Right, how many times over the years have we heard these same things? Just need a few more players, just another few years. Sure. Hold your breath if you want. Until the NCAA tourney expands to take 200 teams, we won't be a part of it.
I like your sense of humor .

Recruits, especially the really good ones we need, care about 3 things:

1. Going to the NBA
2. Going to the NCAA
3. Playing time

How the heck is a 5 year plan enticing to any elite recruit interested in #1 or #2?
Elite recruits only care about Going to the NBA.

If the team makes the tournament so be it. They definitely don't worry about playing time because Elite recruits know the playing time will be there.

Don't get me wrong they'll definitely say the right things about the NCAA tournament and playing time but they don't care.

They care about getting to the league.

i was going to post something similar to yours.....look.sanders, and freeman, may help us win games we shouldn't ...but, they also help us lose games we should win....these are not pikes type of players...freeman does not want to dish the ball out when he's double, and tripled teamed. the shot probably won't go in, but that's beside the point...and corey seems to be more about corey..he's streaky, and has only and occasional i'll take over and win the game.once a season.....if we get mulchachy on board you will see a big difference...the kid can run a team, and not showboat...freeman really pisses me off sometimes..i know he's a hard worker. he has to give it up once in a while...geesh.......mensah, isn't here to carry the team...freeman, and sanders are....going 2 for whenever won't get it done......pike has to get some game changers.

Your coach knows what he's doing and it's not a 5-year rebuild. I said that before the game on Saturday and I think that game is further proof that it's true. He's got them playing defense and rebounding which is half the battle. He just needs to recruit/develop more skill on offense so he's not relying on one or two guys to blow up and carry the team against other good teams.

year 5 or year 6 for NCAA...and that is with solid recruiting which means 2019 haul needs to be very strong

everyone needs to keep remembering this

I think too many people get out of control when RU gets a big win like SHU or plays competitive. Playing competitive is not being successful...it means taking a stop from awful to just scratching the surface like every other programs. We have taken that step but cannot take the next step until better recruits come in.

Pike may be a great coach but if he does not recruit at the level of the rest of the league then it will not matter and RU will struggle to be better than a 500 team

the rise up the charts in the Big 10 is harder than you think. Many assumed this year RU would be leapfrogging a bunch of programs...reality is setting in that RU is almost assuredly finishing in the bottom 4 and is probably 50/50 to finish last again.
Moving up the standings in the B1G won't happen at Rutgers until recruiting is actually better than the teams ranked in the 8-13 range.Fans live in the wishful thinking mode but the harsh reality is that power conference competition requires far better than MAC level talent.

yes thats why I warn people about taking the results of yesterdays game and extrapolating them to next year....just about every bottom half team has played a top team toe to toe on occasion. Its a nice sign to point to but means nothing until we actually start winning games. As RU fans we have seen plenty of close losses at the RAC to superior programs, its what you do after that game...playing Purdue to the wire will not mean much if you end up losing to Indiana by double digits or cannot be Northwestern next week. Its all about recruiting in next two years

I hope you all have the patience to get through this, because I don't see this roster being turned around fully until maybe Geo and Duke's senior years. Too much to overcome.

And if your argument is that it has been too long since and you can't wait that long anymore, my response is "too bad." We have the right guy who is showing signs of following through on a good plan. But it will take time...enjoy the ride and watching the players that are crucial members of the rebuild continue to develop and grow.

Just knowing how much better this team is playing with what still amounts to a patchwork roster is very encouraging. Now we just need to get the players. It's started, but the next few classes are where it takes off. Light at the end of what was a very dark tunnel.

we need two guys on the roster now to go and possibly a third...and that does not even into the Sanders situation. It happens at other programs, dead weight needs to be cut and hopefully we can land some guys in the spring. Next year is likely 14th place. People saying we are a bubble team for NCAA and NIT are delusional and simply forget or do not know anything about the talent or coaches in this league

It is really simplified here....I agree 100%....I am looking at what the Mike and Eugene injuries have done and how they should be presenting opportunities for Thiam and to a lesser extent Doucoure....chemistry is very fleeting at times and this team just doesn't have the basic skills to function in a half court offense.....I don't know what the political backlash is on shedding a player or two, but RU has to free up spots to improve.

I don't get into standings for the following year in the dead of winter, but I can't see how the roster doesn't open up chances (Carter, Mathis, Kiss and Harper) and we see who steps through and develops. The development part is the painful process, to speed through that, we need a starting caliber player this spring and a strong 2 pieces in 2019.

for me I am disappointed that with Mike gone, Pike didnt get Doucoure or Thiam more involved in the offense...then with Eugene out he simply has to get Thiam shots. I am not sure I am all that happy with the way Doucoure has been brought along this year but that does not deter the potential I think he has in the future.

Next year we are relying on young players to do alot and while that may work in non conference play, it will not work in league play. Next year is going to be a tough one IMO but I always thought so thats why I was adamant that Jordan had to be fired after year 3 because this particular year was going to be the one that was going to be an issue. This team has question marks in a lot of spots and it wouldnt be until year 4 that we see the uptick again. Its tough to watch this year because we have so many players that either do not belong at this level AND our two best production players will be gone soon either next or the year after and really arent part of our NCAA push

I hear Mulcahy is great as far as running a team but his shooting is not good. If that's true, I would be very disappointed, we need
shooters really bad, can't win a defense alone.

Going to learn a lot about the team next year, and what their development arc will be.

The only seniors projected on next year's roster right now will be Sanders, Mensah, and Doorson.... and only Sanders is expected to see significant minutes. Lots of minutes for younger guys will mean ups and downs, and time spent building chemistry... but it also means that most of the rotation will be back the following year, which should allow more YoY growth.

Agree. The half court offense last night was abysmal: Corey dribbling around the perimeter, no movement, no one looking to shoot, and when they do it was usually contested shots forced with the shot clock down to a couple seconds.

You can lecture the message board all you want, but it is the donors you need to be concerned about. They have heard it all before.
