Poor NIL is the biggest reason for our disappointing season

To put it in budget terms:
Team X - $3m
Team Y - $1m

Team X has to spend $2m for their top 2 players
Team Y has to spend near $0 for their top 2 players.

Both teams have the same $1m to fill out the roster.

We are Team Y this year.
Getting $2m of players for nearly nothing(?)

So even if we a have a smaller overall budget than peers, our effective budget is equal (or even higher?) because we already got our top 2 players.

Politi NAILS IT on Pikiell’s Postgame Comments

What is he supposed to say?

Sorry I made a massive mistake going the one and done route.
Complain about the lack of NIL
Question why Harper didn't play like the guy who practiced yesterday
Say the team is fighting for shots after Ace takes a few bad ones
Say the team takes on the identity of their freshman stars

What is a guy who knows this season is over and the future of the program is based on guys on other teams right now supposed to say?
How about saying the roster has not provided the 3 point scoring need to win games or has not shown consistency in performance at both ends of the court.Pikiell is a nice guy who won't publicly criticize individual players so all you are going to get during interviews is deflecting what is happening on the court,The only thing that matters right now is a 10-10 record with many of the toughest games yet to be played with or without Harper.Changes in the coaching staff are a must happening for next season along with better choices from the transfer portal like Spencer and Yeboah.

The lack of NIL isn’t the fans fault, it’s Pike’s fault

It is partially NIL but I think it was mismanagement of the budget in getting the right transfers. One would think he could have found at least one 6 foot 9 inch power forward / center that was better than Ogbole.

The biggest fail by Pike is not running anything that looks like an offense to maximize the talents of the players. I never see three point shooters running off of picks to get open. Pike needs to find an offensive coordinator as assistant coach immediately. Also, the defense and rebounding has been abysmal. That was a staple of Pike's prior teams.

There are plenty of mid major coaches who do a lot more with a lot less talent than what Pike has on the roster. You can look at several NJ div 1 coaches (Sha at Seton Hall, Princeton, Monmouth, St Peters, FDU) who could out coach Pike and that is a damn shame.

I was a Pike supporter but the last 2 years have soured me on him as he has not adjusted to the new world of college basketball.

Poor NIL is the biggest reason for our disappointing season

we dont...but our peers are not getting 4 million dollar players dropped into their lap for free

pretty sad to use the no nil funds at RU argument when someone paid 4 million for 2 kids to come here...if only other schools had that

I’ll try and reword your point.

Our top 2 players cost nearly $0(?) of Rutgers specific NIL.
Look at most other teams, I’m sure their school specific NIL had to contribute a sizable % to their top players.

Rutgers didn’t have to do that.
Nearly all Rutgers specific NIL went to players #3 and lower.

That is the immense benefit we received.

Imagine Mahomes didn’t count against the KC salary cap.
And they got all that money to direct towards improving other positions.

We're 3-1 in the B1G with a healthy Harper (and 2-0 with a healthy Harper and Grant playing). Just sayin'.

Illinois is having a similar issue. Have only lost one BT game with its whole lineup playing. Jakucionis missed several games with an injury and now Ivisic has missed two games with mono and who knows when he will return. Those are the two leading scorers and the top rebounder. The pick and rolls they run together are things of beauty, and since Ivisic can stretch the floor, it opens up everything for the other players. Going to be a tough go without him.

I think the market is just looking for a reason to sell off considering a nice run.

Plus if and whenever the time comes how many would use a Chinese AI product? There is TikTok I suppose but on an enterprise level I’d be surprised.
TSM is nicely down. I have been looking to convert my AMD to TSM in my custom stock basket. Might as well do the deed this morning before institutions figure out what the mindless trading algorithms are doing and flip the switch.

Izzo Pullover

I am happy to answer questions, as best I can, about RU merchandising and licensing. Please don't confuse my answers with my love and passion for RU, just reality.

I went to USC, UCLA and Maryland bookstores back in the fall. I've been to both on campus bookstores and off campus stores at PS-MSU-UM-NEB-IU-OSU from the B1G in addition to Syracuse-Clemson-South Carolina and the local UDel and Princeton. The choices, on campus and online, for RU gear aren't bad at all. I'm not sure what folks are expecting.

Please point out a "smaller school" that has a wider selection of merch. You can't compare to OSU or Tenn. Those type schools have been winning in a huge way for generations. We beat Louisville 18 years ago. They have 90,000+ stadiums that are sold out. they have a large, single campus that concentrates the students and the stadiums together. They are named after the state they represent. NJ folks don't follow Rutgers in the same bandwagon manner other states do. IMO, the biggest problem is simply demand. It's not there. We ordered the minimum and still have more than half left of the Rate Bowl tee.

The Izzo 1/4 zip is a nice Nike product. Are we liking the product, or the logo, or both. Scarlet Fever has a really nice Adidas 1/4 zip. I grabbed one myself. Having a cartoon Sparty/Knight dribbling just eliminated 90% of fans. It's only appealing to basketball fans now. It's cute, but wouldn't sell at RU. We've had very nice top shelf Nike and Adidas stuff and it mostly doesn't sell well. People aren't buying $70-$90 hoodies and lots of muttered comments about $75 Adidas polos. That leaves the next step down which is the mid-tier Champion or Colosseum. The step below that is the Pennant or Badger brands. Below that is the Jerzee and Gildan wholesale brands. Honestly, the Gildan soft style tee is more comfortable then most tees out there. The advent and growth of the internet allows the Peter Millar, Lulu or Johnnie O items available to anyone, at any time. The lack of selection is simply a result of supply/demand. On campus, we focus more on the students and they're not buying Peter Millar. RU is not a wealthy student body.

I've had more than my share of disagreements with RU Licensing, but lack of selection or availability is not on them. Rutgers itself doesn't control what is offered by any company, or where it's sold. They can be limiting with art sometimes. Adidas has sucked with product offerings and support, but the demand hasn't been there. Personally, I don't like that retro patch logo, but tough to argue subjective. At $38 a tee and $75 hoodies, it's available for those who like it. What you all want to see???
Steve perhaps the demand isn't there because as you said aside from the core RU faithful, I too don't see folks in NJ wearing Rutgers or Princeton stuff unless they went there (or in Princeton's case live there). And the core folks like me are just over loaded with Rutgers stuff from years and years of getting them. I could wear a different RU shirt every day for a month not counting hoodies and jackets, etc. I have so much stuff that was still brand new from gifts that I have started to re-gift them to folks.

If I am going to get myself another item I want it to be unique and that's what I saw in that Logo. That's just me. I have an older Rutgers Red/Black rugby shirt that every time I wear it somebody asks where I got it (well somehow it still fits from like 20+ years ago lol). I always try and wear something unique because I'm a non-conformist lol.

PS..I actually was still planning on grabbing a Rate Bowl shirt but I am still trying to get over the loss. :)

The lack of NIL isn’t the fans fault, it’s Pike’s fault

Pike signed a big contract to coach the team and recruit. Going after big donors is t his responsibility.

Ideally, I’d agree.
Even recruiting shouldn’t be his primary focus. He should have a voice but and contribute. But during the season?
Just coach the team week to week.
Unfortunately, college athletics broken funding system demands the HC also serve as the GM of the program.

It circles back to fans.
“Elite Boosters” don’t actually care about the team. They need their validation directly from the coach (and players) in order to give money.
So that means HC Pike has to jump through hoops and fundraiser instead of just worrying about game planning and coaching.

Poor NIL is the biggest reason for our disappointing season

When does it become the schools fault and not the fans fault? 50 years of shitty performing sports is why the head coaching jobs aren't all that desirable. 50 years of shitty performing sports are why there aren't more large contributing fans. 50 years of shitty performing sports combined with poor relationship building is why the school doesn't generate alum who want to give back and be involved. Was the world just supposed to shift since the school has finally decided to put some effort ($) in? It will take a generation of changes.

Saquan vs Rice ?

Rice gave us the best three years a rb ever had at RU, I wouldn't trade it for anyone. Barkley a little better in college ypc but Rice more yards and a workhorse. NFL Rice had the better six years but Barkley after this year has better overall NFL career, and still going.
Rice had a better line blocking for him in the NFL than Barkley did in his years with the Giants.

This is one of the all-time silliest reasons for a sell-off. Really, there were no R&D funds kicked their way from the CCP? Zero chance that is possible. Someone should ask their LLM about Tiananmen Square or the Cultural Revolution, I’m sure it has best-in-class amnesia.
There was probably very little R & D money spent because they very likely stole research the US companies did. Or used NVDA hardware that they weren't allowed to.
