Poor NIL is the biggest reason for our disappointing season

None of us are privy to the NIL marketplace.

I think we would have been able to get a 2 guard and a wing off the portal with the spot being open for a guy being a focal part of the offense playing in the B1G for a reduced rate.

Obviously I don't know that.

Our situation coming in to the season had to have eliminated a LOT of potential transfer targets.

If I were a 22 year old playing for a mid major and saw the tape on Ace Bailey and the shots he took I would stay way clear of RU.

You're talking about mid-major players? We got two seemingly-strong mid-major players in the portal last year in Acuff (21.7 pts, 3.6 rb) and Derkack (17.0 pts, 6.0 rb). Do you feel that our player evaluations would be better with mid-major pickups without Bailey/Harper on the roster.... enough so that two such pickups would be a net improvement on having Bailey/Harper? That's a huge assumption - and more wishful thinking than anything else.

Bailey/Harper needed a stable core around them... and we didn't have that. If we'd somehow been able to retain Omoruyi, Mag, Simpson, Woolfolk, and Griffiths.... I feel we'd probably have been in a better place. It's not about shiny new/different/imaginary portal players... it's about Bailey/Harper slotting into an already-built-and-stable system with veterans around them to help them get acclimated.

Izzo Pullover

I am happy to answer questions, as best I can, about RU merchandising and licensing. Please don't confuse my answers with my love and passion for RU, just reality.

I went to USC, UCLA and Maryland bookstores back in the fall. I've been to both on campus bookstores and off campus stores at PS-MSU-UM-NEB-IU-OSU from the B1G in addition to Syracuse-Clemson-South Carolina and the local UDel and Princeton. The choices, on campus and online, for RU gear aren't bad at all. I'm not sure what folks are expecting.

Please point out a "smaller school" that has a wider selection of merch. You can't compare to OSU or Tenn. Those type schools have been winning in a huge way for generations. We beat Louisville 18 years ago. They have 90,000+ stadiums that are sold out. they have a large, single campus that concentrates the students and the stadiums together. They are named after the state they represent. NJ folks don't follow Rutgers in the same bandwagon manner other states do. IMO, the biggest problem is simply demand. It's not there. We ordered the minimum and still have more than half left of the Rate Bowl tee.

The Izzo 1/4 zip is a nice Nike product. Are we liking the product, or the logo, or both. Scarlet Fever has a really nice Adidas 1/4 zip. I grabbed one myself. Having a cartoon Sparty/Knight dribbling just eliminated 90% of fans. It's only appealing to basketball fans now. It's cute, but wouldn't sell at RU. We've had very nice top shelf Nike and Adidas stuff and it mostly doesn't sell well. People aren't buying $70-$90 hoodies and lots of muttered comments about $75 Adidas polos. That leaves the next step down which is the mid-tier Champion or Colosseum. The step below that is the Pennant or Badger brands. Below that is the Jerzee and Gildan wholesale brands. Honestly, the Gildan soft style tee is more comfortable then most tees out there. The advent and growth of the internet allows the Peter Millar, Lulu or Johnnie O items available to anyone, at any time. The lack of selection is simply a result of supply/demand. On campus, we focus more on the students and they're not buying Peter Millar. RU is not a wealthy student body.

I've had more than my share of disagreements with RU Licensing, but lack of selection or availability is not on them. Rutgers itself doesn't control what is offered by any company, or where it's sold. They can be limiting with art sometimes. Adidas has sucked with product offerings and support, but the demand hasn't been there. Personally, I don't like that retro patch logo, but tough to argue subjective. At $38 a tee and $75 hoodies, it's available for those who like it. What you all want to see???
Thanks for replying. I have always been in the lack of demand camp is issue number 1. Although other issues certainly may contribute.

My specific comment I liked the logo, and can never own enough quarter zips. Maybe we can get this when we switch to Nike.

I understand the bball/football logo maybe limiting demand by choosing just one sport fan base but think for RU this particular logo would reach across the aisle to a degree, so to speak.

Martini

All the three point lines at the Garden did he him no favors. Another reason silly playing there. Thought he was a foot or two out of his range every time.
Now we are not going to trust our senior captain to recognize what line to use ? Give me a break. He was wide open on all of them and could have taken 1 dribble and he still would have been wide open. Pike made huge error playing him and sitting Grant for 8-10 minutes.

serenity now...there you said it...ACCEPTANCE
The Ogbole injury broke me. He was also my favorite player. I don't mind losing, but I hate how we are losing. I was OK losing last year, but competing defensively. This team bring back Rosario vibes where I stopped going to games because I was repulsed with the effort i saw. Watching Ace vs MSU gave me flashbacks.

Post Mortem by Lion - Delayed, RU vs MSU

Great recap but disagree in a few spots. Pike in the second half went with Martini and JMike and took Grant off the floor after he hit a 3 for 8-10 minutes. He didn’t play Dortch in the second half as his potential shot blocking and rebounding would have helped. Taking Dylan Grant off the floor was ludicrous.
Everyone is giving Jmike a pass defensively probably because our whole team is challenged but I think his defense has been terrible. He doesn’t disrupt the other team’s point guard. He never gets in their grill, he gets screened all the time and never fights over screens hard enough. He did the same against Princeton allowing Martini to get switched on Lee 3 straight times( Pike’s mistake as well). Offensively , Jmike was terrible , once again bringing his old habit of driving thru trees and it ends up being swatted leading to MSU fast break and score. He had one put back layup on an offensive rebound but that was the extent of the contribution. Did not deserve his minutes.

Thought Pike should have gone to a 2 man game with ACE and Lathan to get ACE an easier look on a pick and pop or just some more room for his jumper. Might not have made a difference since he was just off but MSU did not give him anything easy and Pike could have designed some stuff to make it easier. Pike besides taking Dylan Grant out of the game in the second half right after he hit a 3 , also took Lathan out after he made a nice post move and layup. He does this repeatedly and it drives me nuts. Lathan finally got some rhythm and he gets pulled. He was put back in the game later but momentum was lost. Lathan is capable of hitting that mid range shot consistently and capable of hitting the 3’s but did not yesterday. I am not killing him for taking those shots as all of them were open.
The disappointment with Jeremiah is beyond. His reckless totally out of control drive that he missed off the backboard badly , led to MSU runout and Adkin’s 3 for a crucial 5 point swing. He plays with low IQ for a captain and a senior , who we needed badly and came up so so short.

Poor NIL is the biggest reason for our disappointing season

JWill and AWill were desperation moves after Spencer/Mulcahy bailed late, well after the undergrad portal had closed. JWill was a huge risk, since we didn't even know if he'd be eligible for 2023-24 without a waiver, had the betting issue looming over his head, and was coming off a torn achilles tendon - but there were slim pickens in the portal at that point, and we had a massive hole blown through our roster after we'd thought it was largely set.
omg i totally forgot about AWill..another wasted spot...and you are right...Pike taking too many risks another red flag with EO, J Will and Fernandes all with injuries

Poor NIL is the biggest reason for our disappointing season

potentially great players is not the same as current great players.
my point is Ace Bailey is a potentially great player that right now is an OK college basketball player.

Dylan Harper is a a potentially great player that when healthy has been a great college basketball player
