Post Mortem by Lion - Delayed, RU vs MSU

My stats are always right unless they are wrong.

We are now more than 48 hours after the game and my thoughts are a bit more rational

Fans, especially me, should try and evaluate a player not based on how "hot or cold" the dice were. Ace shouldn't "suck" because he missed 13 shots in a row if they are good looks. Also if there were 4 plays were Ace made the right pass and the player missed the open shot we should really credit him with 2 assists (the expected amount....maybe 1.6 with this bunch)

Don't rewatch, but I am telling you all game on D he was flatfooted and really didn't move. He is not al all thinking of blocking out and is waiting for the ball to come to him.

Another thing......"freshman wall".....it is so easy to say he had a bad game and wasn't engaged as much as normal so he must be hitting the wall. I saw the freshman wall with my one kid and it is real and you get through it. Watching him flat footed and slow to react on D would be the sign.

It’s the little guy, not the whales, right

I would have a better understanding of that than you. Big money people are not coming if they don't feel everyone is all in and yes SOME big money people started decades ago giving small amounts and gradually increased as their earnings increased.
This is just another way to blame the everyday fans. The big donors won't give unless the people who may not be able to afford it are giving? If the big donors aren't giving, they are the problem that needs to be worked on. I can see the small donor being much more interested in adding in when things are being done. Small donors aren't the ground work, they are the gravy.

OT: Ohio State 38 million dollar athletics budget deficit

Multiple stories/articles today in Pennsylvania about concerns from faculty, staff and students at Penn States 19 Branch Campuses and the need for the university to reduce costs this year alone of at least $54 million. Situation is getting worse and some Penn State Branch campuses have seen a student body reduction of 50% or more. Many students living close to a branch campuses can commute, its like having Penn State in your back yard. As the Baby Boom generation had a profound effect on schools so will the "Baby Bust" generation have the same effect only in a negative fashion.

Penn State to remodel Beaver Stadium at a cost of $700 million which will only be used 7 times a year. Does Penn State need a new field house. Million dollar HC and staff salaries,Taj Mahal athletic facilities and growing costs of NIL and Transfer Portal.

I think the primary job of a state university is education vs winning a National Championships.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Poor NIL is the biggest reason for our disappointing season

People spent money to get something in return - a trip to MSG and a basketball game. How many of those 17K would have attended if it cost an extra $300 per ticket for no additional return? Many fans are already dropping several hundred dollars a year on season tickets/parking/etc - to ask them for another $300 that they get zero additional benefit from is not going to get many takers.

It's basically asking people to give money to charity... but it doesn't have any charitable benefit and it's not even tax deductible (like the same donation to the University itself would be)

Also, the "living in poverty" is a misunderstanding of just how little "extra" cash most people have. 80% of the country has less than $5K in savings. For those that do have that much, what percent do you think are willing to part with $300 (per year!) for nothing in return.

If someone has enough disposable income to toss $5-10K toward their favorite college team, that's great - but most people probably aren't financially comfortable enough to even toss $50 in that particular bucket.

Also the "not doing anything of substance" - every ticket someone buys for a game and every time they pay for parking, they're doing something of substance for the team. It's the team's job to give enough entertainment value back to the fans that makes people want to spend their $$$ on watching the team play.

The added benefit they get should be to watch a better team. Will one persons $300 take us to the promise land? Of course not, but many people donating smaller amounts will 100% have an effect.

Listen, you gotta stop with the "people don't have it" crap. Obviously if you don't have it you aren't going to give it. No one is asking a person who can't make ends meet to donate to RU's NIL. But don't tell me A TON of RU fans who live in the tri state area don't have $25 a month. They do...

And like you said further down in the thread, you choose not to give. And that is your right and I get why people don't. I actually give more of the money I donate to RU to facilities over NIL (although I do both). What is annoying to me (and why I posted in this thread in the first place) are the posters who don't give, say it's not on them to give and what they would give doesn't matter, and then go on to bash everything wrong relentlessly every day in every thread. We all need to own that we are part of the problem as well. How much better would we be right now if Pike had another million from smaller donations? How about 2? I'd argue a lot....

Poor NIL is the biggest reason for our disappointing season

My point is we should have had the money to outbid FSU for Ewin, and also land whomever else we wanted to get. We did not have that.

So Pike had to make tough decisions on how to optimally allocate our NIL resources because our NIL resources are scarce. He was not in position to blow the budget on one player, because he needed other players. Bottomline: the budget needs to be a lot bigger.

Schiano is doing the same thing, which I totally detest, taking lower division kids and hoping their ability will scale to this level. Meanwhile Miami Football is recruiting whomever they want because their alumni and supporters care about Footballs success.

Kansas State had the NIL support to land quality Div IA basketball transfers while we’re scrapping the bargain bin. There really is no comparison.

This only further proves the point that we need more money to succeed.

UConn is an appropriate comparison because they are in the same geographic area, with a Coach that was a former Rutgers assistant.

But even if we look at St John’s, we see the same thing. Alumni spent money to bring in quality transfers, and now they are 17-3 overall, 8-1 in conference.

So now the question is why can UConn, Kansas State, and St John’s afford quality transfers and Rutgers cannot? The answer is that UConn, Kansas State, and St John’s have bigger NIL budgets. Ours needs to go up substantially to compete.
Agree with you we need more money. I can personally feel Pike made a bad decision there when a center with Dylan and Ace was out number one need. I’m not saying that review I wanted Ewin here then.

What’s the numbers on KS st vs our NIL budget.

And St John’s has one of the biggest whales ever so that one actually helps our argument on this side.

Btw very much enjoying this convo with you. Thanks. Hopefully it leads to more donors of all sizes.

OT: NJ Devils 2024-2025 Thread

No Hischier tonight. Halonen called back up. That bottom 6 😬

Palat Hughes Bratt
Meier Mercer Noesen
Cotter Dowling Halonen
Tatar Lazar Bastian

Dillon Hamilton
Siegenthaler Kovacevic
Hughes Pesce

Allen
Poulter
That went about as well as expected.

This team is begging for a shakeup. Center depth, the bottom 6 and that Hughes/Pesce D-pairing are all real issues that need to be dealt with. Now 4 wins in 14 games since reaching their high water mark of 24-11-3 on 12/23. The Caps are pulling away with the division lead, the Canes just bolstered their lineup, and both the Jackets and Rags are creeping up with their recent strong play (and multiple games in hand). Not that I want a panic move, but Fitz watched as this team circled the drain for 2 months last year before doing anything. We're already a month into the lousy play this year.

5 games left ahead of the 2-week break for this dopey tournament:

PHI
@BUF
@PIT
VGK
@MTL

I want no less than 7 pts.

We’re not done yet

It's one thing to tell the team that in the locker room. It's another to post this on the forum like you actually believe it even though it is .00001 possible.

But it's your perogotive to come across as you see fit. Hope you get the last laugh.
There's never a reason to give up.. I hope we at least get to see this team play some good bball.
I agree with the second part of your post.

Regarding the first part, I didn’t say I believe we WILL do it, only that it is POSSIBLE.

As we sit here at this moment, there is nothing in my OP that is provably false.

The odds of it happening don’t matter. Only the possibility that it COULD happen matters.

When I go to a baseball game, and my home team is down by 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs and bases empty, I don’t get up and leave, regardless of what the odds say. I wait until the last out because I know, as Yogi said, “It ain’t over til it’s over.” I stay to see if we rally and pull off a great comeback.

I’ll give up on this season only when we are mathematically eliminated from the B1G tourney.

Poor NIL is the biggest reason for our disappointing season

He is learning how to play defense and is a lot better than the beginning of the year.

His motor needs improving and he also could be in better shape.
Come on Greene, I’ll give you that he’s better, but the entire team needs to give better defensive effort. 2nd half MSU was awful to watch.

Respectfully I disagree with the fact that it was spin, we had additional money because we chose to spend it on the portal gets after Ewin. Ewin was early in the process. We chose to spread it thin rather than secure a portal center.

Also not really fair you chose UConn. Are you going to tell me every team in the NET top 50 has more resources than us? Look at the run Kansas St made recently in the ncaas with all transfers. It can be done, albeit not easy, but getting the right portal players and demanding discipline from them and coaching them up. That doesn’t mean being their “Buddy” and letting them goof off in pregame warmups with a dunk contest for example.

Finally many of those recruiting misses were before the NIL era so the lack of resources doesn’t really play.

Post Mortem by Lion - Delayed, RU vs MSU

Ace had 0 blocks, 2 defensive rebounds and 0 assists and missed 13 straight shots. You are an optimist and saying he had a good game.
Your stats are correct of course.

My counter:

1) Bailey had 2 steals - a nice positive, and came from playing proper defense.

2) He had 9 overall rebounds. And 7 offensive rebounds is GREAT. I think it possible he got fewer defensive rebounds because his defensive assignments were different than in most prior games: He mainly covered a GUARD, not a WF or PF. So it is possible (I'd have to rewatch the game to look specifically where Bailey was on the floor defensively - which I am not going to do).

3) On the assists .. yes, 0 ... BUT ... I distinctly remember AT LEAST 4 occasions where Bailey passed the ball out to the wing from either him driving and kicking or him semi-posting in the short corner or high post and being doubled. RU players were 0-4 from 3 on those passes ... and it could have been more.

4) Cannot say missing 13 consecutive shots hurt RU like heck ... it did. And MSU did as well as any team this season so far in contesting Bailey with good athletic defense. Yet ... of those 13 missed shots, at least 9-10 were what I would call "good" shots. It is the nature of the beast that is Bailey that in some games he will be "hot" and in some games he will NOT be "hot". Him not being hot in any given game does NOT mean he did not play well overall - it just meant he was not hot ... and he is the type of player - and on a team without the supporting personnel to take the load off him (especially with Harper unable to really play) - where he has to keep shooting, even when he is cold ... because he COULD ignite at any time ... like making his last 2 shots (though it was too little too late).

reporting $0 in revenue from student fees. Kudos to them for that....unless it's burried somewhere else I'm not seeing.

Looks like Ohio State charges for football student tickets ~$400 per season and sell ~20,000 student tickets. So roughly they are collecting $8 million year from the students. Not directly a "student fee" but effectively a "student fee"
