The Truth about this team

PJ and Acuff has a +\- of 34 and 33. How do you split those two. Whose time do you take away. Rich people problems.

Ja is a +/- of 23 near bottom of the pack. But his numbers looked better before last night. And efficiency is top 6.

Williams is just flat out struggling, after every game with a bottom of the pack, and a +/- 19 on the season (only LS is lower at 18) and a worst on the team team efficiency.

Overrated?

2 main reasons I’m not concerned yet

1. I would rather be good offensively and need work defensively than the other way around. I trust Pike to figure it out.

2. I have never been all that concerned we were in danger of losing any game so far. Maybe St. Peters for a minute. We have been able to get out to 10-15 point leads the problem has been building on that and destroying the other team. We have made the shots or gotten the stops when needed.

Idk I’m having fun, each game feels like an event. This isn’t a perfect team but I’m confident we haven’t seem anything close to a final product. Trying to enjoy and savor the time we have these 2 phenomenal players
I feel the same and said this to my friend at the game

Fun fact that might make you feel better

We are 4-0 with all of 4 our wins by double-digits.

Barely, I know, and I also know we haven’t faced murderers row.

But we never really do to start the season, and the last time this happened was 2020 which turned out to be a pretty damn good team led by juniors and seniors who had been together for years.

The time before that…1982 which also turned out to be a damn good team led by 4 seniors.

1982, 2020, and now 2024…except this time our 3 leading scorers are all freshmen…breathe….

The Truth about this team

Hard to compare players across decades in general....

That said, I am enjoying the ride so far and think we have a ton of talent PLUS the right mix of complimentary players. Jordan for one is someone who is hustling all over the court making plays on both ends trying to create for others--he knows his role and is embracing it. Same goes for Martini from what I have seen and helps open up our offense with h[is outside shooting which will hopefully free up more Harper and Dylan.

Lathan has been a surprise to me considering he is not a starter. I know he is just a freshman but his footwork and ability around the rim has been great. Would like to see him try and draw more contact(with intent) as he also can shoot FTs which is something we have lacked from the Center position. My only gripe against him is his lack of awareness on defense(rebounding and help side). I am hopeful that will improve but its a problem at the 5 position.

I truly want to see Hayes out there more. Has such a nice stroke on offense and makes up for some of those defensive lapses. Clearly our defense is lacking as a whole so we need to score points--he can help.

JMike and JWill I am down on. With JMike I am noticing more maturity with him in the game slowing down and not trying to do too much. Just dont think he compliments as much as the other players and again situation for defense(full court press). While he is prob one of our best on-ball defenders I am still seeing guards take advantage of him.
JWill is a mystery to me. Clearly has talent but something seems missing. Clearly doesn't not have a good outside shot but he still seems out of control on many occasions and still finds himself slipping all over the court(maybe Nikes will help?)

Playing Time

Martini and Hayes need more minutes. They are guys who clearly are going to open up the game for Harper and Bailey based on their outside shooting and not having a defender play off them to double.

Those minutes need to be taken away from JWill and JMike. While both hustle out on the court they are liabilities in many ways. I see the below as where it should land. I think that Hayes, JMike, and JWill should be situational and that I would lean more towards Hayes at this point for outside shooting. so those minutes should be changed based on that. Acuff still needs time to show out.

15.00Jwill

Good article by Iseman on Kaliakmanis's play and improvement

AK is more consistently accurate than GW was, but obviously not nearly as good a runner. AK's accuracy appears to become much more GW-like when under heavy pressure or, with a couple notable exceptions, when throwing on the run.

Our overall passing game this season is benefiting greatly from better OL pass blocking and much better WRs, especially in the past couple games. And MD's secondary was really very bad.

AK is also likely benefiting statistically from not having to play teams overflowing with elite DBs and LBs like the 3 teams GW faced last season (OSU, UM, PSU).

While I think that GW, with this year's OL and WRs, would have significantly better stats at RU than he did in 2023, I still think AK is probably the slightly better QB overall. But I don't think it's nearly the huge difference so many of our fans make it out to be.

I didn’t find the OL to be a problem last year. Not on run nor pass protection. The issue wasn’t that Gavin didn’t have time. He often had tons of time but just wasn’t accurate. He didnt avoid sacks by scrambling with his legs, rather he wasn’t even allowed to try to scramble. He was programmed to throw the ball away immediately if option one wasn’t there.

And again - AK has been playing with a knee brace for at least half of the season. I don’t know why folks are dismissing this as nothing. Take a look at Gavin’s rush stats when he came back from injury in Nov 2022 and was nursing a lower body injury. What do those numbers look like?
